  • Ren Hang What We Do Is Secret
REN HANG WHAT WE DO IS SECRET JUNE 18 – JULY 23, 2016 MAMA Gallery is proud to present What We Do Is Secret, Beijing-based artist Ren Hang’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Los Angeles. In the face of censorship and social restraints, Hang intuitively creates moments of uninhibited liberty through nude human sculpture. Considered one of the most provocative photographers today, Hang’s work can be considered overtly explicit, emotional, beautiful, funny, and grotesque, all at the same time. While Hang’s public demeanor understates any political significance in his work, Hang’s carefully directed images may suggest otherwise. Hang’s perspective of contemporary youth within China’s climate of economic, cultural and social upheaval serves as a strong case for freedom of expression under any circumstance. Perhaps inadvertently, Hang’s subject matter and seemingly simple technique have transcendent ramifications. His subjects project an irreverence that directly disrupts the restrictive realm of heteronormativity and presents alternate sexual and aesthetic realities. The title of Hang’s exhibition, What We Do Is Secret, references the music of punk band the Germs, which aligns with the provocative spirit of the artist’s images. Antagonism abounds in Hang’s work with a counterculture-fueled rebellion lying at its core. Ren Hang was born in Changchun, China in 1987. He currently lives and works in Beijing, China. His work has been exhibited at international museums including; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai; Songzhuang Art Museum, Beijing; UCCA, Beijing, He Xiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen; Multimedia Art Museum Moscow; China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing; Groninger Museum, Netherlands, and Östasiatiska Museet, Stockholm.

Jiang is an artist who constantly innovates with the infinitely generative potentialities of the photographic medium. His recent artistic evolution has taken him from digital photography to the experimentation with the materiality of photographic film, from the exteriority of excessive urbanization to the interiority of human existence and sexuality. With the use of cameraless analogue technique, traditional darkroom processes, and the application of instant film materials and found images, Jiang creates large-scale abstracts works and unique sculpturesque instant- film objects. Jiang has been awarded the Aletti ArtVerona Prize for Photography in 2011, the Jury Grand Prize from the Société Générale Chinese Art Awards in 2010 and the Tierney Fellowship Award from the First Annual Three Shadows Photography Award in 2009. Jiang was invited to participate in the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2012 and was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2012. • Sites of Zou and Ma Migration in the Qing
APPENDIX F Sites of Zou and Ma Migration in the Qing The information on Zou and Ma migration is drawn from the generational charts of the three primary genealogies, the MSDZZP (1945), FYZSZP (1947), and MTLZXZSZP (1911). Since precise dates of migration are given only very rarely, I have estimated the probable time of migration from the birth and death dates given. “Zou1” refers to the upper-shrine Zou lineage; “Zou2” to the lower-shrine. The table is organized by province, prefecture, and county. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Late 17th– Late 18th– Late 19th– early 18th mid-19th early 20th Bookselling Location century century century site ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Anhui province Wuyuan 婺源 county (site of Ma migration in the late 16th c.) • From Canton to Guangzhou Photographs by Felice Beato and Xu Peiwu
From Canton to Guangzhou Photographs by Felice Beato and Xu Peiwu Gallery 16 Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery Birmingham, UK 3RD May – 10TH August 2008 The Exhibition This exhibition presents two series of photographs, taken almost 150 apart of the city of Canton / Guangzhou. The first body of work is a series of vintage photographs of city of Canton taken by the British photographer Felice Beato in 1860. These are amongst the earliest images taken by a European photographer in China. These historical photographs are just part of a significant collection of photographs, archives, books and other related material relating to China held in Birmingham Central Library and the City Archives. The second body of work is a series of images of the modern city of Guangzhou taken by the contemporary Chinese photographer Xu Peiwu: some of these will be taken in direct reference to the buildings and locations represented in Beato’s photographs. The exhibition will explore the different ways in which these two photographers documented buildings, street scenes and people in the city, and in so doing, reveal many of the dynamic changes that have occurred in the more recent process of urbanization. The exhibition is being jointly curated by Peter James, Head of Photographs, Birmingham Central Library and Dr Jiang Jeihong, Director of the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts at Birmingham City University. The exhibition will form part of a season of exhibitions staged by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery which are being presented as part of the CHINA NOW Festival (www.chinanow.org.uk). The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of lunchtime talks organized in partnership with the Birmingham City University's Centre for Chinese Visual Arts.

It is caused by a yet unidentified heat-stable toxin. In the present review of published case studies and official press releases, the main objective is to report the emergence and epidemiology of Haff disease in China. Haff disease first occurred in Beijing in 2000 and in Lianzhou and Liannan, Guangdong Province in 2009. Subsequent outbreaks mostly occurred in the Jiangsu Province—Nanjing, Yangzhou, Huai’an, and Yancheng. Isolated outbreaks occurred in other cities since 2010—Shijiazhuang, Yueyang, Shanghai, Wuhu, Baoding, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong (imported cases from Shenzhen). Outbreaks occurred predominately in the summer. Crayfish accounted for almost all the outbreaks. Two large outbreaks occurred in Lianzhou and Liannan in 2009 (n = 54) after eating pomfrets and in Nanjing in 2010 (n = 42) after eating crayfish.

  • LIANZHOU, FIFTEEN YEARS of PHOTOGRAPHY 2019 EXHIBITION PROGRAMME the Year 2019 Marks the Fifteenth Year of Lianzhou’S Photographic Journey
PRESS RELEASE LIANZHOU, FIFTEEN YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2019 EXHIBITION PROGRAMME The year 2019 marks the fifteenth year of Lianzhou’s photographic journey. Since 2005, the festival has gained international recognition as the most professional photography festival in China. In 2017 this ambition has been taken on by the Lianzhou Museum of Photography that opened in the city’s historical centre, granting China its first public institution devoted to the medium. This year we commemorate this anniversary with a series of exhibitions and public programmes. In fall the LMP will celebrate new talents with exhibitions from Chinese, American and Spanish emerging photographers. Meanwhile the theme of Lianzhou Foto festival’s fifteenth edition ‘A Chance for the Unpredictable’ will pay homage to photography’s practice and malpractice with an international theme exhibition under the curatorship of Peter Pfrunder. Alongside the theme exhibition will be over 50 solo and group shows presenting local and overseas talents. The festival opening on November 29 will coincide with the unveiling of LMP’s four winter exhibitions. During the opening week, Lianzhou will become a platform for discussion for Chinese and international photographers, curators, journalists, academics and enthusiasts. Galerie Paris-Beijing is very proud to host the curator of CIFA-China Independent Film Archive for the video part of the exhibition. Among the photographic works, the selection of which was conceived by Romain Degoul, the gallery’s Gao Brothers: since the 1980s, the two brothers have been practicing politi- cal satire through their pieces, which has brought them under close surveillance. Two guards are regularly posted at the entrance of their studio. The photograph Now-ing, by Chi Peng was censured right in the middle of the SH Contemporary fair in Shanghai, where the gallerist initially had to cover the work with a sheet before removing it… only to sell it to the censor’s friend, who was amused by the whole polemic! Such are the anecdotes that we recount through the exhibition.
