Please check the website for finalised programme. /LiveAtZédel /LiveAtZédel I am delighted to announce the second season at Live at Zédel, our rich programme of music, cabaret, comedy, musical theatre and spoken word that inhabits the uniquely beautiful Brasserie Zédel in Piccadilly. Since relaunching in September 2016, the programme has sought to broaden the range of talent being showcased and by extension the diversity of the audiences who come to enjoy this cultural and dining hub in the heart of Soho. This season marks a number of firsts for the venue. After You is the first new musical commissioned especially for Crazy Coqs. An intimate two hander, it will navigate the explosive and corrosive impact of a chance encounter in a restaurant. Celebrating the sumptuous Art Deco design and French flavours of Brasserie Zédel French Fest from March 5 – 12 offers a feast of Francophile culture – music, opera, theatre and comedy – with several shows in French, English, or both. Many shows established in the first season return with residencies in the second. Look out for cabaret sensations La Voix, Miss Hope Springs, House of Q, or for unrivalled jazz, Smitty’s Big Four and Hailey Tuck. Matt Cardle is back for three shows and following her sell-out run in November, Maria Friedman returns for a three week run in May. Whilst the ground- breaking Philarmonia residency in Crazy Coqs this autumn culminates in a performance with the full Orchestra in the Brasserie for a dinner-concert on January 29th. There are too many acts making their Live at Zédel debut to name here, but with over 200 events to choose from and 2 shows a night, we hope you will find plenty to entice you in this brochure. • June 2015 President: Vice President: Price 50P When Sold Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace
No. 491 - June 2015 President: Vice President: Price 50p when sold Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace WHAT A SWELL PARTY IT WAS! Liz Schafer reviews Shakespeare’s Birthday Party 2015 This year’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Party was marked by a ‘can do’ spirit of improvisation and the result was a thoroughly enjoyable event. The Old Vic circle bar, where the party is normally held these days, was full of props and so there was no room for the party. Crisis! But Ned Seago, the Old Vic doorman, arranged for the party to be held instead backstage in the rehearsal room. Once the rehearsal room had been commandeered, Nickolas Grace stood outside the theatre greeting guests with his usual charm and directing us to the Webber Street Stage Door entrance. After we had all recovered from the lift, which probably should be granted ancient monument status – it had lovely wooden panelling and a sign sternly warning Maria Friedman with Jamie Parker and The Bard everyone that ‘weight must be evenly distributed’, we were able to relax in the open, airy rehearsal room. This, as members with long memories reminded us, used to be the venue for the VWA parties. I would certainly vote for parties being held there in the future if at all possible. As Nick pointed out, although the floorboards were now sanded down, they were the very ones trodden by stars such as Olivier, Ashcroft, Gielgud in their days at the Vic, when they were in rehearsal. Nick certainly had plenty of interesting memories of working in that room.
