INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Government of Nepal has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Nepal India Regional Trade and Transport Project for the improvement of Naryanghat – Mugling Road. Under the project it has started to construct the new bridges in following rivers: a) Khani Khola b) Mauri Khola c) Dasdhunga Khola and d) Jalbire Khola Nepal India Regional Trade and Transport Project has procured contracts of ”Construction of Bridges over Khani, Mauri, Dasdhunga and Jalbire River” in two following contracts which are in construction stage. Field Diary Birgunj ICD: Nepal’s Largest Dry Port Sugam Bajracharya Research Fellow, Nepal Economic Forum About the Field Visit In collaboration with CUTS International, Nepal Economic Forum (NEF) conducted a field survey under the study ‘Enabling a Political-Economy Discourse for Multimodal Connectivity in the BBIN Sub-region.’ As a result, a team of enumerators from NEF visited the Birgunj Inland Clearance Depot (ICD), the Birgunj Integrated Check Point (ICP), and the surrounding city of Birgunj in December 2020. The objective of the visit was to make a ground-level assessment of the current scenario of the developments in port infrastructure, trade logistics, and the surrounding infrastructure that might play a pivotal role in the multimodal connectivity of Nepal and the BBIN sub-region. The visit also intended to hold stakeholder consultations to get a view of challenges in daily trade operations. Connectivity to Birgunj ICD and ICP The Birgunj ICD is located in the Parsa district of Province 2. The nearest city, Birgunj, is at a distance of 8 km from the dry port, and the nearest Simara airport is 23.4 km away. The ICP is located right next to the ICD at the Nepal-India border. The city of Birgunj is about 140 km south of Kathmandu and takes about four and a half hours to reach via the Kulekhani-Hetauda route. However, large vehicles like buses and trucks are only allowed to travel the Kathmandu-Birgunj route via the Prithvi Highway, which is about 300 km and takes approximately 8-10 hours. Therefore, a 15-minute direct flight from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Simara Airport is the fastest option available to travel to Birgunj. -

Public Disclosure Authorized JV with Group of Engineer’s Consortium (P) Ltd., and Udaya Consultancy (P) Ltd.Kathmandu April 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction The Government of Nepal (GoN) has requested the World Bank (WB) to support the improvements of existing roads that are of vital importance to the country’s economy and regional connectivity through the proposed Strategic Road Connectivity and Trade Improvement Project (SRCTIP). The project has four components: (1) Trade Facilitation; (2) Regional Road Connectivity; (3) Institutional Strengthening; and (4) Contingency Emergency Response. Under the second component, this project will carry out the following activities: (a) Improvement of the existing 2-lane Nagdhunga-Naubise-Mugling (NNM) Road; (94.7 km on the pivotal north-south trade corridor connecting Kathmandu and Birgunj) to a 2-lane with 1 m paved shoulders, and (b) Upgrading of the Kamala-Dhalkebar-Pathlaiya (KDP) Road of the Mahendra Highway (East West Highway) from 2-lane to 4-lane. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) was undertaken during the detailed design phase of the NNM Road to assess the environmental and social risks and impacts of the NNM Road before execution of the project in accordance with the Government of Nepal’s (GoN) requirements and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). -

They agreed that STIUEIP should support the goal of improved quality of life and higher economic growth in secondary towns of Nepal. The outcome of the project preparation work is a report in 19 volumes. 2 This first volume explains the rationale for the project and the selection of three towns for the project. The rationale for STIUEIP is the rapid growth of towns outside the Kathmandu valley, the service deficiencies in these towns, the deteriorating environment in them, especially the larger urban ones, the importance of urban centers to promote development in the regions of Nepal, and the Government’s commitments to devolution and inclusive development. 3 STIUEIP will support the objectives of the National Urban Policy: to develop regional economic centres, to create clean, safe and developed urban environments, and to improve urban management capacity. -

Ethnic/Caste Diversification in Kathmandu Metropolitan: Changing Social Landscape of a Capital City

E-mail: [email protected]. Accepted July 8, 2010 Kathmandu metropolitan, the capital city of Nepal is a socio-geographic microcosm of the nation as a whole and demonstrates caste/ethnic mosaic. Known historically as a Newar settlement, Kathmandu accommodates at least 67 caste/ethnic groups. It has witnessed nearly six-fold increase in population within the last 40 years. Utilizing the population census 2001, this paper examines the population dynamics from a socio-geographic perspective by focusing on concentration of caste/ethnic groups, migration in the city and apparent ethnic diversification. The findings suggest that spatial distribution of caste/ethnic population demonstrates more of diversification than concentration. The index of ethnic diversification clearly demonstrates a geographic pattern associated with distance. The level of diversification increases from the city core to the periphery along with increase in distance from the core. Diversification is closely related to migration both internal and international but primarily internal. These findings are expected to contribute to the ongoing national debate of formation of federal states reflecting one or other group’s primacy. This primacy issue is grounded in argument of ethnic concentration while in reality the social landscape has been much more diversified than many of them have realized. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine 2014, 10:5 http://www.ethnobiomed.com/content/10/1/5 JOURNAL OF ETHNOBIOLOGY AND ETHNOMEDICINE RESEARCH Open Access Medicinal plants used by the Tamang community in the Makawanpur district of central Nepal Dol Raj Luitel1*, Maan B Rokaya2,3*, Binu Timsina3,4 and Zuzana Münzbergová2,4 Abstract Background: We can conserve cultural heritage and gain extensive knowledge of plant species with pharmacological potential to cure simple to life-threatening diseases by studying the use of plants in indigenous communities. Therefore, it is important to conduct ethnobotanical studies in indigenous communities and to validate the reported uses of plants by comparing ethnobotanical studies with phytochemical and pharmacological studies. Materials and methods: This study was conducted in a Tamang community dwelling in the Makawanpur district of central Nepal. We used semi-structured and structured questionnaires during interviews to collect information. We compared use reports with available phytochemical and pharmacological studies for validation. Results: A total of 161 plant species belonging to 86 families and 144 genera to cure 89 human ailments were documented. Although 68 plant species were cited as medicinal in previous studies, 55 different uses described by the Tamang people were not found in any of the compared studies. Traditional uses for 60 plant species were consistent with pharmacological and phytochemical studies. Conclusions: The Tamang people in Makawanpur are rich in ethnopharmacological understanding. The present study highlights important medicinal plant species by validating their traditional uses. Different plant species can improve local economies through proper harvesting, adequate management and development of modern techniques to maximize their use. -

Road network of Nepal is categorized into the strategic road network (SRN), which comprises of highways and feeder roads, and the local road network (LRN), comprising of district roads and Urban roads. Nepal’s road network consists of about 64,500 km of roads. Of these, about 13,500 km belong to the SRN, the core network of national highways and feeder roads connecting district headquarters. (Picture : Nepal Road Standard 2070) The network density is low, at 14 kms per 100 km2 and 0.9 km per 1,000 people. 60% of the road network is concentrated in the lowland (Terai) areas. A Department of Roads (DoR’s) survey shows that 50% of the population of the hill areas still must walk two hours to reach an SRN road.
