Table of Contents Coping with Crises: Christian –Jewish Relations in Catalonia and Aragon, 1380‐1391 by Alexandra Eni Paiva Guerson de Oliveira A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Alexandra Eni Paiva Guerson de Oliveira (2012) Abstract Coping with Crises: Christian –Jewish Relations in Catalonia and Aragon, 1380-1391 by Alexandra Eni Paiva Guerson de Oliveira Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto 2012 This dissertation explores Christian-Jewish relations in the decades prior to the watershed of 1391, when Christian mobs throughout Castile and the Crown of Aragon killed or, more often, forcibly converted many Jews. My research indicates that the explosive violence of 1391 was not the predictable, inevitable result of growing interfaith animosity in the Crown of Aragon but was sparked by developments in Castile. Because of the resultant converso problem many historians consider 1391 to be a turning point in Iberian history. Yet historians have not closely explored Jewish-Christian interaction in the crucial later fourteenth century, particularly not in the Crown of Aragon, and have assumed, wrongly I believe, that the period following the Black Death (1348) saw a steady deterioration in the Jews’ relations with Christians. The first three chapters of the dissertation deal with the “crises” that marked late fourteenth-century Catalonia and Aragon. In the first chapter I outline the long-term precedents - the Black Death and successive wars – of the economic crisis that would follow. The second chapter focuses on economic matters – the Jewish contribution to the economy as well as the impact of growing debt and the development of new credit mechanisms. Chapter three, in turn, focuses on the impact of increasing taxation on Jewish communities. The final three chapters explore ways in which Jews and Christians coped with crises: chapter four deals ii with sources of conflict within Jewish communities, chapter five with conflict between Jews and Christians, while the last chapter looks at conversion as a way of coping with the crises of the fourteenth century. Throughout, my research shows how Jews and their Christian neighbours and rulers developed strategies and means of coping with the effects of epidemic disease, famine, and frequent warfare. I pay particular attention at how the law became a mechanism for coping with the worsening of economic conditions. iii For Alan Bell and Heloisa Bezzi iv Acknowledgements The seed from which this dissertation grew was planted in a seminar on Crime and Disorder in Medieval Society taught by Shannon McSheffrey at Concordia University, Montreal, in the Fall of 2002. Being of Iberian background, I originally resisted the pull towards Iberian history but I am glad its diversity and complexity proved too attractive to resist. I have to confess that four Montreal winters also helped moving to a field that required constant trips to Spain. A Canada Graduate Scholarship by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada enabled me to spend a year at the archives in Barcelona and Girona. An Ontario Graduate Scholarship and a grant from the Fond québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture supported the early stages of my doctoral degree. I would not have gone far at the archives without the patience and generosity of Joaquín García Porcar, Virginia Moreno García-Cano, Rosa Gregori i Roig, José Luis Cabo Pan, and endless conversations with Felix de la Fuente Andrés at the Archives of the Crown of Aragon. At the Historical Archive of the City of Girona, I could not have located certain volumes without the help of Albina Varés. Mark Meyerson’s work attracted me to the University of Toronto, where his humanity, engagement, passion, and wisdom have served as an example during the eight years of my doctoral degree. His confidence in me kept me going when the challenges seemed insurmountable. My debt to him far exceeds what I can express here. At the University of Toronto, I had the privilege of receiving some of the best training a medievalist could dream. Virginia Brown, A. G. Rigg, Jill Ross, Joseph Goering, all ensured I had the technical and linguistic skills necessary to access the archival sources upon which this dissertation is based. The credit for introducing me to the wonders of the Iberian world goes, oddly enough, to a historian of medieval England, Shannon McSheffrey, my undergraduate advisor. Kenneth Mills made the comprehensive exams a more enjoyable experience and v pushed me to think more broadly and comparatively. Nicholas Terpstra, Barbara Todd, Jennifer Mori, Nicholas Everett, David Stiles, John Christopoulous, Julie Gilmour, and other members of the Premodern Discussion Group at the Department of History heard me present parts of this thesis and provided important feedback and encouragement. Natalie Oeltjen, Paola Tartakoff, Jamie Smith, Joanna Carraway, and Sara McDougall shared valuable information on conversion, Jewish history, or the intricacies of medieval law. More recently, Doris Bergen, Ariel Beaujot, Carol Chin, and other members of the history community at U of T have also provided encouragement at key moments. My graduate school years were some of the best of my life and I owe much of that to the incredible friends I made in Toronto and Barcelona. My dearest friend Dana Wessell Lightfoot was a mentor from my very first visit to Toronto and has continued to be my wisest sounding board. She kept me afloat when I thought I would drown. A gifted teacher, I have to credit her any success I may have in the classroom. Pau Parès and Mireia Coma brought us into the heart of Catalonia and its wonderful people. I will never forget our lunch on the top of the mountain. Naomi Ebert Smith, an Aussie living in Barcelona, incorporated my husband and I to her incredibly diverse group of friends. The experience of twelve-hour lunches at Jackie & Sebastian’s in the company of twenty very smart and very funny people from around Catalonia, Spain, and the world will remain some of my fondest memories. Francesca D’Alfonso, Sylvie Rotter, Matt Green and Elena Santiago, Citlali Vazquez Echeverria, Andres (who taught me to make mate), Yaniré Andrade, Francisca Fonseca Pietro, Eli Alfaro, made the year in Barcelona a turning point in my life. Estrella (“la jefa”), Paco, and Kiko, at Estrella de Galicia, our neighbourhood bar, made us feel at home. vi In Toronto, Janine Rivière, Heidi Diepstra, Kathleen Gibbons, Martha Solomon, Wilson Bell, Hallie Fischel, Lizzie and Alfred, have become friends for life. I owe special debt to my late grandmother, Heloisa Bezzi, who turned her back to a life of leisure in search of a life of meaning. She went to university in a day and place when few women did, and faced any difficulty life threw at her with unfaltering strength. Amid the effigies of saints, holy bishops, abbots, and Christian monarchs—defenders of the faith—there stands a fine polychrome statue of an Islamic doctor of theology. This cathedral was not begun until the early thirteenth century; but the memory of the saintly Mussulman was still held in such regard at Toledo a century and a half after the reconquest of the city from the Arabs, that his image was set up in one of the two most prominent positions of honour. These two conspicuous sites are the two pillars which, with the two others beside the twin pulpits, sustain the vault of the main chapel. The one on the Gospel side has a statue of the mysterious Shepherd of Las Navas—thought by some to have been an apparition of St. Isidore the Farm-Hand, Patron of Madrid—who showed King Alfonso the Good the secret mountain pass that enabled the Christian army to win the decisive victory of the Reconquest at Navas de Tolosa in 1212, and who vanished after showing the path to the leaders; the statue is said to have been made from a rough sketch drawn by the king himself. And in the corresponding position on the Epistle-side pillar stands the Moslem who won the great victory of renunciation and peace.

The apparently contradictory nature of such unlikely instances of interreligious military cooperation serves as his stepping-off point for a fascinating, compelling, and at times provocative study of how political power, religious identity, and the complexities of interfaith relations actually shaped a period which has since become renowned for its bewilderingly intertwined legacies of both violence and coexistence. It is always a pleasant surprise when a serious work of historical research also makes for a stimulating read, as is the case with this book.

    JEWISH AVERROISTS BETWEEN TWO EXPULSIONS (1306-1492): FROM CONFLICT TO RECONCILIATION Basem Mahmud Freie Universität Berlin ABSTRACT This article investigates the intellectual production of Jewish authors influenced by Averroes in the 14th and 15th Centuries in northern Spain and southern France. The primary objective is to determine the main features of Jewish Averroism in this period, and to understand it within its socio-historical context. The outcomes suggest that there was a relationship between the new social and political trends toward democratization and reconciliation in the heart of Jewish communities on one hand, and the growing interest in Averroes’ original works on the other. Original here means the works that are not commentaries or summaries of other works. Key words: Aristotelianism, Averroes, Averroism, Jewish philosophy, Kabbalah, Maimonides, Scripture. INTRODUCTION «There is nothing worse in social government than a policy that makes one single society into several, just as there is no greater good in communities than a policy that joins and unifies» (Averroes)1 The 14th Century was a very difficult time for Jewish communities in northern Spain and southern France, they faced great threats from outside as well as significant domestic division. The domestic conflict emerged not only because of religious and philosophical issues, but also due to economic and social matters related to the distribution of wealth and power within Jewish communities.2 In addition, these communities lived in delicate conditions due to threats from the Christians. This situation also had an effect on demographics. Since the last years of 13th Century, the Jewish community started to encounter sizeable obstacles in its demographic development.3 Under these conditions, Hebraic Averroism continued its development which had begun in XIII century.

The focus will be centered on how it is used in different ways in the different kingdoms (Castile, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Portugal and the Basque Provinces and Navarre) and what the authors are trying to achieve through this. Results show that while Castilian authors try to prove Spanish antiquity with the Tubal settlement, in other kingdom, especially in Catalonia, Portugal and Navarre there is a more regional use of the myth. Most of these authors try to prove that their own kingdom is the territory where Tubal settled, which would give a pre-eminence of antiquity to it in comparison to the other Iberian territories.     CRONICA DEL LUGAR DE CAMPILLO DE ARAGON DE LA RELIGION DEL SEÑOR SAN JUAN DE JERUSALEM DESDE EL AÑO 1581 Y SEGUN SU ARCHIVO PARROQUIAL Por Ladislao Pérez Fuentes CAMPILLO de Aragón es un pequeño pueblo situado a 14 kilómetros del Monasterio de Piedra. Es la última avanzadilla de Aragón hacia Castilla. Pertenece al partido judicial de Ateca, y su término municipal limita con los de Calmarza, Jaraba, Ibdes, Llumes (Monterde), Cimballa, Fuentelsaz y Milmarcos, ya en la provincia de Guadalajara. Es una tierra árida y sobria, igual que sus gentes, que se confunden con ella y en ella cultivan cereales y apacientan los rebaños, principales fuentes de riqueza del pueblo. Es una tierra dura y fuerte que, durante el verano, con sus trigos dorados y los cuervos clavados en lo alto, recuerda algún paisaje de Van Gogh. Contraria en todo al Aragón de vega que la rodea, no por ello es menos Aragón, ni sus gentes se sienten menos aragonesas que las de la ribera. En esta tierra, en este pueblo, se establecieron en tiempos que no hemos podido determinar, los caballeros sanjuanistas, los cuales poseyeron parte de las tierras, y bajo su tutela estuvo el pueblo y fue regida su iglesia, durante varios siglos. El archivo parroquial, del cual nos hemos servido para hacer esta crónica, comienza en el año 1581, y ya es un sacerdote de la Religión de San Juan, Fray Jaime Ruiz, prior, natural de Encinacorba, el que con las palabras "Ini­ tium sapientiae est timor domini", comienza el 4 de junio del dicho 1581 los "quinque libris" del primer tomo de este archivo.

Pp. 225-237 UN DOCUMENTO GENEALÓGICO DEL SIGLO XVIII PARA EL ESTUDIO DE LA NOBLEZA ARAGONESA ENCARNA JARQUE* JOSÉ ANTONIO SALAS" El objetivo del presente trabajo de momento no es otro que la presentación de un interesante manuscrito conservado en la Biblioteca Capitular de La Seo de Zaragoza.1 En él se contiene información de carácter genealógico extraída preferentemente de los fondos documentales de la Real Audiencia. Su autor fue Inocencio Camón, nacido en la capital aragonesa en 1726. Licenciado en leyes en la universidad de Zaragoza el año 1751, es conocido como autor de la primera obra impresa sobre esta institución académica, titulada Plan que presenta el estado actual de la Universidad Literaria de Zaragoza, Zaragoza, 1768, y de unas Memorias Literarias de Zaragoza, 2 vols., Zaragoza, 1768 y 1769. Ya en esas fechas simultaneaba sus tareas docentes en la universidad zaragozana con el puesto de relator sustituto en la sala de lo civil de la Real Audiencia, 2 condición que seguía manteniendo mientras escribía el manuscrito objeto de nuestro estudio.3 Su carrera docente en la universidad queda resumida en una obra inédita del propio Camón conservada en la Biblioteca Universitaria de Zaragoza, en la que señala la obtención de su primera cátedra, de Código, que desempeña desde 1770 hasta 1780, año en el que obtiene la de Vísperas de Leyes, continuando como docente al menos hasta 1786.4 El 6 de agosto de 1793, a la edad de 67 años, Inocencio Camón fallecía en Zaragoza. * Departamento de Historia Moderna y Contemporánea.
