Part I : the GMRT -- a historical perspective . Part II : the GMRT -- current status . Part III : future -- the upgraded GMRT Some history . It is the early 1980s… the VLA has recently become operational . Radio astronomy has shifted from the low frequencies, where it was born, to higher frequencies (cm and higher wavelengths) -- obvious reasons . Note, however, techniques like self-cal have been shown to work . In India, the radio astronomy group at the Tata Institute, under the leadership of Govind Swarup, is looking for the next big challenge… They have already : . Built the Ooty Radio Telescope in the late 1960s – still operational & producing international quality results (in fact, currently being upgraded with new receiver system!) . Built the Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope (1980s) – short-lived but valuable learnings . Built up considerable experience in low frequencies (metre wavelengths) Birth of the GMRT . Motivation : bridge the gap in radio astronomy facilities at low frequencies and address science problems best studied at metre wavelengths . First concept : 1984 (started with large cylinders); evolved to 34 dishes of 45 metres by 1986 . Project cleared and funding secured by 1987 . Construction started : 1990; first antenna erected : 1992 . First light observations : 1997 – 1998 . Released for world-wide use : 2002 The GMRT : turning it ON Jan 1997 : First fringes with the prototype GMRT correlator Dec 1998 : first light pulsar observation with the GMRT Dedication of the GMRT The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope was dedicated to the World Scientific Community by the Chairman of TIFR Council, Shri Ratan Tata. -

“Such was the man who captivated my heart in religious matters as no other man has till now.” MAHATMA GANDHI -Modern Review, June 1930 AN UNTOLD STORY IN THE HISTORY OF INDIA SHRIMAD RAJCHANDRAJI AND MAHATMA GANDHI 2017 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the great Indian saint, poet-philosopher, and spiritual luminary - Shrimad Rajchandraji. Honoured as the spiritual guide of Mahatma Gandhi, Shrimad Rajchandraji had a tremendous and formative influence on the Father of the Nation. Gandhiji met Shrimadji for the first time in Mumbai, upon his return from England as a barrister in 1891. Shrimadji’s inner equipoise, absorption in spiritual pursuits, enlightening wisdom, knowledge of the scriptures and moral earnestness left a deep-rooted impression on Gandhiji. Their relationship blossomed over profound interactions in the two years that Gandhiji spent in Mumbai. Upon moving to South Africa, Gandhiji corresponded with Shrimadji through letters. Shrimadji’s insightful thoughts ignited the fire of spiritual inquisitiveness in Gandhiji. Their close association contributed in moulding Gandhiji’s moral fibre. Shrimadji’s inherent adherence to the principles of satya, ahimsa and dharma later crystallised as the fundamental tenets of Gandhism. Although Shrimadji left His mortal body at a young age of 33 in 1901, Shrimadji’s letters and compositions were Gandhiji’s dear companions. He contemplated upon them time and time again. Gandhiji would write about Shrimadji, speak about Him in speeches and discuss Him with close associates. He continued to be deeply inspired by his bond with Shrimadji, and His spiritual works. The force that influenced Gandhiji’s ideas and guided his beliefs, the entity that contributed in the making of the Mahatma - Shrimad Rajchandraji is revered for His great spiritual state, extraordinary personality and literary genius by seekers across the world. -

Statement of Accounts 55 INDIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES BANGALORE 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2007 - 2008 1 Introduction The Academy was founded in 1934 by Sir C.V. Raman with the main objective of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science (both pure and applied). It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act on 24 April 1934. The Academy commenced functioning with 65 Fellows and the formal inauguration took place on 31 July 1934 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. On the afternoon of that day its first general meeting of Fellows was held where Sir C.V. Raman was elected its President and the draft constitution of the Academy was approved and adopted. The first issue of the Academy Proceedings was published in July 1934. The present report covering the period from April 2007 to March 2008 represents the seventy-fourth year of the Academy. -

Amitava Raychaudhuri Research Summary: In 2007-08, research has been carried out in aspects of neutrino physics, particle physics models based on space-time with extra dimensions, and quark models. In continuing work on the prospects of the proposed Iron Calorimeter detector at INO being used as an end-detector for a very long baseline experiment in con- junction with a beta-beam source in Europe, it has been shown that this set-up has unmatched sensitivity for probing many of the remaining unknowns of the neutrino mass matrix. Related work on long baseline experiments with a beta- beam have (a) explored the possibility of using the survival probability Pee and (b) optimised the baseline, boost-factor, and luminosities for the best reach for probing the open issues of neutrino physics. The upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutral higgs scalar is shown to be considerably relaxed in models in which SUSY is embedded in space-time of more than four dimensions. Even though the observational evidence for the ‘pentaquark’ is currently not strong, such a bound state is a consequence of QCD. The group theory of the ‘triquark’ – which is a aconstitutent of the pentaquark – has been examined with a focus on the colour-spin SU(6) structure. Using these results, the masses of the different pentaquak states and their colour-spin excitations have been estimated. Publications: 1.
