Texas Big Bend and the Davis Mountains Participants: Anne, Craig, David, Frank, Hilary, Jan, Joan, Judith, Lori, Linda, Neil, Skip and Stephen April 22-29, 2017 GUIDES Woody Wheeler and Lynn Tennefoss Sunset through "The Window" at Chisos Basin, Big Bend National Park Day One: El Paso to McNary Reservoir, Balmorhea State Park and Fort Davis Appropriately, we started this journey on Earth Day. We departed from El Paso on an unusually cool but sunny day – ideal for travelling. El Paso and its suburbs swiftly gave way to the vast expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert. An hour east, and well into the desert, we exited off the freeway at McNary Reservoir. At the exit underpass, we found a small colony of Cave Swallows searching for nest sites. This was a life bird for many in our group. Nearby, we pulled into the completely unassuming McNary Reservoir. From below it appears to be a scrubby, degraded bank. Upon cresting the bank, however, there is a sizeable reservoir. Here we found Clark’s Grebes performing a small portion of their spectacular mating dance that resembles a synchronized water ballet. Western Grebes were also nearby, as were a variety of wintering waterfowl and an unexpected flock of Willet. Gambel’s Quail perched conspicuously and called loudly from the shore. Just as we were about to depart, Lynn spotted a lone Ruddy Duck bringing our total to 17 species of Gambel's Quail birds at our first stop. We stopped for lunch at a colorful Mexican restaurant in Van Horn that has hosted a number of celebrities over the years. -

A Look at the Texas Hill Country Following the path we are on today through 2030 This unique and special region will grow, but what will the Hill Country look like in 2030? Growth of the Hill Country The Hill Country Alliance (HCA) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to raise public awareness and build community support around the need to preserve the natural resources and heritage of the Central Texas Hill Country. HCA was formed in response to the escalating challenges brought to the Texas Hill Country by rapid development occurring in a sensitive eco-system. Concerned citizens began meeting in September of 2004 to share ideas about strengthening community activism and educating the public about regional planning, conservation development and a more responsible approach growth in the Hill Country. Richmond and Ann Coe Christiansen 1993 NOTE: This map is the product of collaboration of the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology and the U.S. Geological Survey, and is designed for both scientific and practical purposes. It was prepared in two stages. First, the map and map explanations were prepared by the State compiler. Second, information on the map was integrated with that of adjacent maps, locally supplemented, and related to a uniform map symbol classification by the editors. Map unit descriptions were edited, supplemented, and coordinated with those of other maps of this series so that individual unit descriptions are applicable throughout both this map and all other maps of the series. Problems of mapping or interpretation in different areas were resolved by correspondence to the extent possible; most simply reflect differences in available information or differences in philosophies of mapping and serve to encourage further investigation. Less than forty percent of the surficial deposits of the United States have been mapped and described. Traditionally, mapping of surficial deposits has focused on glacial, alluvial, eolian, lacustrine, marine, and landslide deposits. Slope and upland deposits have been mapped in detail only in restricted areas. However, an enormous amount of engineering construction and many important problems of land use and land management are associated with regions that have extensive slope and upland deposits (colluvium and residuum, for example). -

A Big Colorful Hole in the Ground The first account I had of Palo Duro Canyon was from my son. He had been out to Lubbock to attend the swearing in of a friend from college as a County Judge. My nephew, Ben, who lives in Lubbock, said, because my son had some free time, they should go see Palo Duro Canyon. So, according to my son’s account, “Off we went at a high rate of speed” as the West Texans are disposed to do. My immediate family members are life-long residents of the coast and East Texas. We are accustomed to seeing trees and lots of greenery. The cap rock country is a different world to us. “We were cruising along slightly below the speed sufficient to become airborne, in that barren desert country,” my son recalled. “Ben told me I would not believe my eyes, and I did not!” ”! After a few twists and turns off the interstate, a road plunged down 800 feet into a vast depression in the ground. And this is exactly as I found it some years later. We went there to camp in the canyon and see this marvelous 16 thousand acre plus Texas treasure, The Grand Canyon of Texas (and the second largest canyon in the US). The multi-colored canyon walls were striking but had little effect on Brigid. Her first sighting of a flock of wild turkeys that came “grazing” by our camper about day break was quite another matter. Her behavior reminded me of that of our son when at 5 years of age he saw an elephant for the first time. -

Middle Jurassic salt: This cross-section shows rocks of the East Texas Basin between the Oklahoma-Texas border (on the left) and the Gulf of Mexico coastline (on the right). The purple rock unit is the Middle Jurassic salt, a rock unit that has the ability to flow under pressure. The salt is overlain by thousands of feet of sediment which place enormous pressure on the surface of the salt and cause it to flow. At numerous locations the salt has intruded upwards into overlying sediments. This has produced small mounds or towering columns of salt that can be thousands of feet tall. Growth of the dome is accomplished by migration of salt into the dome from surrounding areas. The salt migrates into the dome because it is compressed by the weight of overlying sediments. What is a Salt Dome? A salt dome is a mound or column of salt that has intruded upwards into overlying sediments. Salt domes can form in a sedimentary basin where a thick layer of salt is overlain by younger sediments of significant thickness. -
