Gonzales, in a press release, said the proposition was a victory for drivers in all. The key enticements for con- sumers in switching to clean-air vehicles, Gonzales said, include reducing air contaminants and boosting auto sales. He also said providing free parking for drivers of hybrid cars will attract people to downtown businesses. Next Tuesday, the San Jose City Council is scheduled to vote on a regulation that would expand the number of municipal off-street parking spaces. Rod Diridon, director for the Ink Mineta Transportation Institute, and a professor in the College of Business at San Jose State University, said under the proposed measure metered parking would be free for drivers of hybrid or electric vehicles until the limit on the park- ing space expired, provided a desig- nated sticker is shown in the win- 4 dow of the vehicle. The Minera Transportation Institute was partially founded and is supported by the College of Business at San Jose State University Diridon said the sticker is small and useful to the information being processed by parking attendants because it specifies the vehicle is a clean-air model. THE PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE: MULTI-LINEAR STORIES IN ORAL EPIC AND VIDEO GAMES by Emily Joy Bembeneck A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Classical Studies) in The University of Michigan 2013 Doctoral Committee: Professor Ruth S. Scodel, Chair Associate Professor Gordon Calleja, University of Malta Associate Professor Basil J. Dufallo Associate Professor J. Mira Seo, Yale-NUS © Emily Joy Bembeneck 2013 DEDICATION For Vanessa ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I owe my utmost gratitude and respect to my chair, Ruth Scodel, who has continually challenged and encouraged me to pursue my ideas and interests. Even in my least lucid moments, she found meaning in the possibilities of my studies and was a constant presence of stability throughout my graduate career. Without Mira Seo, the writing you read within these pages would be far from comprehensible and the ideas within it too muddled to understand. Her help and advice has been invaluable. I am so grateful to Basil Dufallo who has always prompted me to be doubly sure of my decisions. He has taught me to only follow those goals and ideas that I believe are truly profitable for study, regardless of the traditional expectations and fears I may encounter. With the help of Gordon Calleja's encouragement and feedback, I have been able to more easily bridge the gap between the fields of Classics and Game Studies to, I hope, the benefit of all my readers. His ideas on storytelling and narrative within games have vastly influenced my own understanding of the player's narrative experience and are a constant source of inspiration.

Otto Volumes 32 through 45: Richard R. Rutter Dedications The Baum Bugle’s editors for giving Oz fans insights into the wonderful world of Oz. Fred E. Meyer, my mentor during more than a quarter century in Oz. Introduction Founded in 1957 by Justin G. Schiller, The International Wizard of Oz Club brings together thousands of diverse individuals interested in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and this classic’s author, L. Frank Baum. The forty-four volumes of The Baum Bugle to-date play an important rôle for the club and its members. Despite the general excellence of the journal, the lack of annual or cumulative indices, was soon recognized as a hindrance by those pursuing research related to The Wizard of Oz. The late Fred E. Otto (1925-1994) accepted the challenge of creating a Bugle index proposed by Jerry Tobias. With the assistance of Patrick Maund, Peter E. Hanff, and Karin Eads, Fred completed a first edition which included volumes 1 through 28 (1957-1984). A much improved second edition, embracing all issues through 1988, was published by Fred Otto with the assistance of Douglas G. Greene, Patrick Maund, Gregory McKean, and Peter E.

  • 'The Wizard of Oz' to 'Wicked': Trajectory of American Myth
FROM 'THE WIZARD OF OZ' TO 'WICKED': TRAJECTORY OF AMERICAN MYTH Alissa Burger A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2009 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Gene S. Trantham Graduate Faculty Representative Don McQuarie Piya Pal Lapinski © 2009 Alissa Burger All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor The Wizard of Oz story has been omnipresent in American popular culture since the first publication of L. Frank Baum’s children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the dawn of the twentieth century. Ever since, filmmakers, authors, and theatre producers have continued to return to Oz over and over again. However, while literally hundreds of adaptations of the Wizard of Oz story abound, a handful of transformations are particularly significant in exploring discourses of American myth and culture: L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900); MGM’s classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939); Sidney Lumet’s film The Wiz (1978); Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995); and Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Broadway musical Wicked (2003). This project critiques theories of fixed or prescriptive American myth, instead developing a theory of American myth as active, performative and even, at times, participatory, achieved through discussion of the fluidity of text and performance, built on Diana Taylor’s theory of the archive and the repertoire. By approaching text and performance as fluid rather than fixed, this dissertation facilitates an interdisciplinary consideration of these works, bringing children’s literature, film, popular fiction, theatre, and music together in a theoretically multifaceted approach to the Wizard of Oz narrative, its many transformations, and its lasting significance within American culture.
