This Is a Test ‘SMART COOKIES’ CAST BIOS JESSALYN GILSIG (Julie) – Jessalyn Gilsig has the distinction of portraying some of the most memorable characters on television. She reunited with creator Ryan Murphy for a lead role in his Golden Globe® and SAG Award-winning FOX musical dramedy “Glee.” Previously Gilsig starred for Murphy on the Globe-winning “Nip/Tuck” while simultaneously appearing on Brett Ratner’s breakout FOX drama “Prison Break” as Dominic Purcell’s ex-wife. On “Nip/Tuck,” Gilsig portrayed feisty Gina Russo to Julian McMahon’s slick Dr. Troy. The show garnered Gilsig impressive reviews, enough to garner her additional stand-out recurring roles on NBC’s hit dramas “Heroes” as the cheerleader’s mother, on “Friday Night Lights” and, more recently, on “CSI: NY.” Next on the horizon is the indie film “Somewhere Slow,” in which she served double duty as star and producer. No stranger to acclaimed programming, Gilsig is also known for her role as strong-willed Social Studies teacher Lauren Davis on “Boston Public,” a role that creator David E. Kelly had created with her in mind. Gilsig also achieved series regular status on “Snoops,” as well as in an arc on “The Practice.” She also recurred as a detective on Steven Bochco’s “NYPD Blue,” guest starred on “Law & Order” and starred in the Emmy®-nominated web series “Imaginary Bitches.” Also impressive are Gilsig’s film credits. She recently appeared as Brittany Snow’s aunt in Screen Gem’s hit remake of the thriller “Prom Night,” and once again reunited with the film’s director for Sony’s remake of another 80’s thriller “The Stepfather.” Additionally, she starred in the action/thriller “XIII” alongside Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff. Gilsig has also worked with the likes of Robert Redford on “The Horse Whisperer” and appeared as Sally Field’s daughter in Showtime’s “A Cooler Climate.” She took to the ice for the Canadian hockey drama “Chicks with Sticks” with Jason Priestley, starred for the Weitz brothers in the mockumentary “See This Movie,” and also starred opposite Robert Carlyle in Lionsgate’s “Flood.” A Montreal native, Gilsig honed her talents at Harvard University’s prestigious American Repertory Theatre. An extensive list of stage credits includes the off-Broadway productions of Fifth of July, in which she starred opposite Robert Sean Leonard and Parker Posey, Gun Shy, and Mere Mortals. Gilsig currently resides in Los Angeles where she enjoys painting when not juggling her many projects. he won an Emmy, SAG Award and Golden Globe for her bravura performance as Marcia Clark in last year’s FX miniseries, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, but it took Sarah Paulson almost another year to confirm what the TV industry really thinks about her acting chops. Earlier this year, her longtime collaborator and O.J. executive producer Ryan Murphy offered the actress the lead in Ratched, an origin story he is executive producing that focuses on Nurse Ratched, the Siconic, sadistic nurse from the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Murphy shopped the project around to networks, offering a package for the first time that included his frequent muse Paulson attached as star and producer. “That was very exciting and also very scary, because I thought, oh God, what if they take this out, and people are like, ‘No thanks, we’re good. We don’t need a Sarah Paulson show,’” says Paulson. “Thankfully, it all worked out very well.” In the wake of last year’s most acclaimed TV performance, everyone—TV networks and movie studios alike—wants to be in business with Paulson. Ratched sparked a high-stakes bidding war, with Netflix ultimately fending off suitors like Hulu and Apple (which is developing an original TV series strategy) for the project last month, giving the drama a hefty Why the inimitable two-season commitment. And that is only one of three high- profile TV series that Paulson will film over the next year. In Sarah Paulson is the 2018, she’ll begin production on Katrina, the third installment in Murphy’s American Crime Story anthology series for FX, and continue on the other Murphy FX anthology hit that future of TV.

  • FX's John Landgraf Worries About 'Narrative Exhaustion'
FX's John Landgraf Worries About 'Narrative Exhaustion' 08.03.2018 FX boss John Landgraf is the executive everyone waits to hear at the Television Critics Association semi-annual press tour, having coined the term "peak TV" in 2015. On Friday, however, he conceded that peak TV was still a long way from peaking. So far this year, 319 scripted series have premiered on linear and streaming television, reports FX research. That's up 5 percent compared to the same last year. Streaming services are offering 46 percent more scripted series, while premium cable is offering 42 percent more. Basic cable and broadcast are both down at 11 percent and 5 percent, respectively. All of that is resulting in what writer/director Paul Schrader called in 2009 "narrative exhaustion." "Profusion of stories is very good if you want to talk about innovation and diversity," said Landgraf. "But … it's very hard if you're talking about trying to surprise the audience and delight the audience." RELATED: Winter TCA 2018: How FX Fits Into Planned Disney Acquisition Still, Landgraf does not expect this frenzy of production to slow down anytime soon, especially with deals like Disney's pending acquisition of Fox and AT&T's recently concluded acquisition of Time Warner happening specifically to combat Silicon Valley giants such as Facebook and Apple, not to mention Netflix's annual $8 billion programming budget. Under Landgraf, FX has been an auteur-focused brand, working with such creators as Noah Hawley, Ryan Murphy, Donald Glover, Pamela Adlon and Louis CK. FX also has responded to calls from critics for more diversity both behind and in front of the camera.
