It also tells us how important it is to respect one another and not allow prejudice to rear its ugly head. #ere has to be tolerance and understanding and our role here, with our friends in Horažďovice and with the world at large, is to ensure that this never ever should happen again. We must be vigilant and never remain silent in the face of danger or where truth is at stake. We owe this duty to all those who have perished in the horrors of the Holocaust and also to those who today, in different parts of the World, suffer because they are seemingly different.   • Rabbi Andre Ungar Z’L (21 July 1929–5 May 2020)
    Rabbi Andre Ungar z’l (21 July 1929–5 May 2020) Jonathan Magonet abbi Ungar was born in Budapest to Bela and Frederika Ungar. The Rfamily lived in hiding with false identity papers from 1944 under the German occupation.1 After the war, a scholarship brought him to the UK where he studied at Jews’ College, then part of University College, and subsequently studied philosophy. Feeling uncomfortable within Orthodoxy, he met with Rabbi Harold Reinhart and Rabbi Leo Baeck and eventually became an assistant rabbi at West London Synagogue. In 1954 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy and was ordained as a rabbi through a programme that preceded the formal creation of Leo Baeck College in 1956. In 1955 he was appointed as rabbi at the pro- gressive congregation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Very soon his fiery anti-Apartheid sermons were condemned in the Afrikaans newspapers and received mixed reactions from the Jewish community. In December 1956 he was served with a deportation order and was forced to leave the country. He wrote with passion about his South African experience some ten years later in the book Resistance against Tyranny2 A symposium edited by his friend and fellow Hungarian Eugene Heimler whose important account of his Holocaust experience Night of the Mist Ungar had translated into English. I found that our own genteel white leisure and wealth was a thin veneer over a vast mass of coloured suffering; and that the distinction was arti- ficially created, maintained and, since the Nationalist victory of 1948, deliberately worsened day after day.

    The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. City synagogues country wide with the onset of suburbanization in the 1950s relocated to and/or reorganized in the suburbs. Yet, regardless of the relocations and/or reorganizations of city synagogues, the suburbs witnessed almost two decades of synagogue growth. In the 1970s, however, as the initial reasons for synagogue consolidation changed, net gains in synagogue growth ceased. Surprisingly, although the number of synagogues has decreased and the rate of synagogue consolidation has increased, there is a lack of academic sources dedicated exclusively to those issues surrounding synagogue consolidation. Indeed, the most notable literature concerning synagogue consolidation is that published by communal leadership. Providing congregations wishing to explore consolidation with insight into the issues that arise during the merger process, these sources are practice guides more than academic works. They do not place these mergers within the historical contexts of American Jewry and Judaism in post-war America nor do they examine the ways in which the details of such mergers are informed by these contexts.

This article analyzes the features characteristic of Reform synagogues in central and Western Europe, and demonstrates that only a small number of these features were implemented in the choral synagogues of Russia. The article describes the history, architecture, and reception of choral synagogues in different geographical areas of the Russian Empire, from the first maskilic synagogues of the 1820s–1840s to the revolution of 1917. The majority of changes, this article argues, introduced in choral synagogues were of an aesthetic nature. The changes concerned decorum, not the religious meaning or essence of the prayer service. The initial wave of choral synagogues were established by maskilim, and modernized Jews became a catalyst for the adoption of the choral rite by other groups. Eventually, the choral synagogue became the “sectorial” synagogue of the modernized elite. It did not have special religious significance, but it did offer social prestige and architectural prominence.     CRESCAT IN HORAS DOCTRINA The Old Lennensian Newsletter of the Old Lennensians Association Spring Edition April 2020 “All hail! Lennensian, the first of your kind Let your pages be ever the best; And in scanning them o’er let nobody mind Not to find himself there with the rest.” (October 1907) A Word from the Editor When I was writing the Spring newsletter, I was optimistic that the Coronavirus pandemic would be over, that the endless Zoom meetings would be a thing of the past and that the Association would be able to get much more involved in the life of the school. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the threat to our lifestyle is as powerful and insidious as ever. We have been in regular contact with the school and have offered what support we can in these troubling times. I am delighted to say that Peter Riches has now joined me as a Trustee and that I have become a governor of the school. I say this, not to be boastful or to suggest a tilt at world dominance, but because I believe such appointments give us a better chance to serve the school in ways which the school determine rather than us. I have been impressed with the commitment of the staff and the caring attitude of the pupils in the last weeks and months. Discipline hasn’t been as issue. Young people are often unfairly criticised but they have clearly risen to the occasion during this awful year which will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
