The re- newal of the Benedictine monastic communities in Břevnov and other places in our country, as well as the restoration of the monastic buildings, began in 1989 and have continued ever since. ACTIVITIES nearby • Ladronka • Pilgrimage route from Prague to the Loreta convent in Hájek SUMMary According to the Rule of Saint Benedict, the Benedictine monks are Christians who in the community pray and work to- gether. The prayer is a private prayer (especially so-called lectio divina, the meditative reading of the Bible) and a public, liturgical prayer (so-called opus Dei, the work of God: the Eucharistic worship and divinum officium, clock worship in the chancel). Work is also considered to be kind of prayer for Benedictines: according to the position of the monastery and dispositions of Brethren it includes manual work, work in the religious administration and scientific work, in education. Monks make four vows: vow of poverty, vow of purity, vow of obedience (in the Benedictine tradition they are all together called “conversion of manners”) and vow of stability (lifelong permanence in a monastery or in a particular community). The current look of the monastic garden is the result of the overall baroque reconstruction of the area by K. and K. I. Dientzenhofers and partial later arrangements. The part of the enclosed religious order, i. e. the lower part, where the actual building of the monastery is located, is open to the public daily from 6:45am till 8:00pm; (the pavilion called Voj- těška, according to the legend the meeting place of St. Adalbert and Duke during the founding of the monastery – this pavilion is accessible only within the guided tours). The so-called upper garden (to the north from the monastery, above the enclosed religious order part) is permanently open. It is an example of the top baroque architecture and especially the monastic Church of St. Adalbert undoubtedly belongs among the most beautifully decorated churches in Europe. In this temple, which can be seen during the guided tour, you can find a large amount of various reliquaries, i.e. boxes containing the remains of the saints, for example the reliquary of St. Adalbert, Lawrence of Rome, Clement and many others. The most valuable relic of the Broumov Monastery is certainly the copy of the Shroud of Turin, which was found in the monastic church in 1999. The exposition of the Shroud of Turin together with precious liturgical vestments can be seen in the monastery refectory. Another interesting room worth visiting is the library with 17 thousand volumes and a treasurable globe. ACTIVITIES nearby • sandstone rock cities Adršpach, Teplice nad Metují, Ostaš • Broumov group of churches • Monastery Broumov SUMMary In 1213 King Ottokar I of Bohemia gave the Broumov region to Benedictines from Břevnov Monastery in Prague. The former fortress was shortly after the year 1300 rebuilt to a monastery in Gothic style. The Břevnov Monastery was burnt down by the Hussites in 1420 and Abbot Nicholas and some other Benedictines escaped to Broumov. It was an important moment for the Broumov Monastery, because it was preferred to the abbey and united with Břevnov into one single complex. Then it became one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in the Czech territory. The boom in the his- tory of the monastery was in the turn of the 17th and 18th century. That time is associated with extensive constructions in baroque style and architects Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofers. In 1950 the Broumov Monastery became a concentration camp for priests, monks and nuns of various monastic orders. In that time various horrible reconstructions were done in the monastery. An example of these reconstruction can be seen in the faulty wiring in the monastery halls. Nuns used to work here in Broumov in some of factories and a state homes- tead. When the monastery was given back to Benedictines in 1990, the nuns left to Moravia. However, no Benedictines live here because there are only about 30 of them in the Czech Republic and the majority lives in a district Břevnov in Prague. The most valuable monument preserved in the cloister is a cycle of wall paintings with the themes from the Old and New Testaments; so-called Emauzy Cycle from the second quarter of the 14th century. Apart from the cloister there are also the monastery church, the Imperial Chapel with Beuron decoration, baroque refectory and atrial quad opened to the public. The Benedictine Abbey was established in the 14th century in a high gothic style. The most valuable monument pre- served in the cloister is a cycle of wall paintings with the themes from the Old and New Testaments; so-called Emauzy Cycle from the second quarter of the 14th century. Moreover, a substan- tial number of contemporary scholarly works have erased the thin line between material evidence and its interpretation. As a consequence, the architectural remains of Polish Romanesque edifices are often considered the basis for wider comparative research. Meanwhile, fragmentarily preserved structures of Romanesque buildings have allowed scholars to conduct research on their origins and models, but they have rarely provided enough information for spatial recon- structions of them. This means that one might investigate the process of transposing patterns from the Holy Roman Empire to Poland instead of the influence of Polish masons’ lodges on each other.     První zmínka o Židech v Prostějově pochází z roku 1445. Pohled pod pokličku dějin Prostějova Po roce 1454 našli v Prostějově útočiště Židé vyhnaní z nařízení krále Ladislava Pohrobka z královských měst. Jiří z Kravař povolil Židům z Olomouce, aby se v Prostějo- Prostějov se rozkládá v rovinatém, mírně zvlněném zá- vařů. 27. března 1390 byl Prostějov povýšen na město, vě usadili. Lk.6:36 Bishop Mathew Shija - RIP : Bishop Emeritus Most Rev. Mathew Shija of Kahama Diocese was called to eternal rest on December 9, 2015 in Kahama at the age of 91. Those of us who have encountered him know how fatherly he was to us. He was the Bishop of Kahama from November 11, 1983 to April 24, 2001 during which time we as MSFS started our ministry in the Diocese of Kahama. His mortal remains were laid to rest on December 17 in the Cathedral Church of Kahama. Mungu ana saa yake! Bishop Shija was a person of simplicity and compassion. He had genuine human concern for the other. We all remember the graceful moments we had with him whenever he visited our communities in Kahama and Tabora. With his unassuming personality and ever willing pastoral zeal, his life served as a telling example of the compassionate love of God and the missionary face of the church. When asked about his health, future, life style etc, he had always the serene answer: Mungu ana saa yake. God has his own time. Yes, God called him to eternal rest at the very beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy - in his own time. May the Souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in Peace.     Digital Editing of Medieval Manuscripts - Intellectual Output 1: Resources for Editing Medieval Texts (Paleography, Codicology, Philology) The history of books and libraries in Bohemia Michal Dragoun (Charles Univeristy in Prague) While books were initially rare in medieval Bohemia, they would come to play an important role in the lives of all social classes by the end of the Middle Ages. The pace of that advancement was not, however, constant. Many factors contributed to spread of books and to their use, some of them pushed the advancement forward significantly, others less significantly. Books were initially a monopoly of the Church and its institutions but gradually, the circle of book users extended to the laity and more and more texts came to be written in vernacular languages. Acknowledging the abundance or research into medieval books and libraries more generally, this overview will comment only on the most significant moments in the book culture of medieval Bohemia. There are two fundamental turning points in the history of Medieval Bohemian book culture – these were the establishment of a university in Prague, and the Hussite Reformation. To provide a brief overview of types of libraries, it is necessary to categorize them and study the development of individual categories. In any case, the Hussite period was the real turning point for a number of them. Sources The sheer abundance of sources provides the basis for a comprehensive overview of Bohemian book culture. The manuscripts themselves are the most significant source. However, the catalogues used to study Bohemian collections tend to be very old. As a result, the records are often incomplete and contextual information is often unavailable.

Roman Onderka, MBA Mayor of the Statutory City of Brno EUROPEAN COUNTRYSIDE WITHIN THE POST- INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY EXCURSION GUIDE South-Moravian Region, Czech Republic, August 28, 2014 Brno – Znojmo R52 is a high speed road from Brno to Pohořelice, continuing as I/52 to the Austrian border and Vienna. It has been built in the path of the Amber Trail connecting Northern and Southern Europe. It is a part of the expressway from Gdańsk to Vienna. 20 km are in operation, 33 km in preparation. Maximum transport intensity is 42,000 vehicles per 24 hours. A part of the motorway was built in line of the motorway from 1939 which should have connected Vienna and Wroclaw and which has never been completed due to the war. The section from Brno to Pohořelice is in operation since 1996. The finishing of the highway is blocked by environmental activists. They argue mainly with environmental damage of a sensible territory, with increasing transport load by transit and they suggest different option namely using D2 motorway (section Brno-Břeclav) and its linking-up in direction to the Vienna. Austrian side is constructing the motorway Wien – Drassenhofen which should connect the Czech R52 near Mikulov. In 2010 Supreme Administrative Court accepted suggestions of two municipalities (Bavory and Dolní Dunajovice) and some natural persons and cancelled the territorial plan of the Břeclav district including the R52 road.
