I am grateful to many within my community who have helped me to realize this project. First, I would like to thank Ann Reynolds for helping me to find my voice several years ago in her undergraduate art history class. I would also like to acknowledge the exceptional faculty in the UT Radio-Television-Film department, in particular Mary Beltrán for her guidance and whose own work inspired the feminist media focus of this project, and Alisa Perren for supporting me and so many of us in the department and for helping me to become a better writer. I am especially grateful to my advisor, Kathy Fuller-Seeley, whose tireless mentorship over the last two years encouraged me to fully develop my ideas and whose insightful eye also kept them grounded. I thank all of you for fostering a supportive intellectual environment.
Thanks to Stella Lucero and her family for their friendly smiles, good conversations, and always having an open table for me to write at Julio's on 42nd Street. I appreciate all the scrappy sisters in my life who fight to make the world around them a more just and beautiful place to live, especially Nora Bellows, Cristina Cabeza-Kinney, Leticia Marteleto, Nancy Mims, Angela K. Pires, and Mary Trahanovsky. Thank you for persisting; I learn so much from you. Finally, a big thank you to my children, who should not have had to be as understanding and patient as they have been while I finished this thesis. The three of you inspire everything I do and have taught me more grace and humility than any project I have worked on. I love you, Nico, Lucy, and Peter.
