Wroughton, Wiltshire The Wroughton find was discovered on 27 May 1998 by June and Glen Bailey, whilst creating a patio to the rear of their house in Old Wroughton. The hoard, with its container, was delivered to the British Museum on 30 June, a report was prepared for the coroner and the group was declared to be Treasure at an inquest on 30 September. The Swindon Museum wished to acquire the find, which therefore went before the Treasure Valuation Committee. The 219 coins were found a few metres from the backdoor of the finders' house, buried about four feet down, close to a sarcen stone. The cottage itself dates back to at least the mid seven- teenth century, when it existed as a single-storied structure. After the 1660s it was given an extra floor, and has had further additions since. Along with the coins were the remains of a single pot, dating from perhaps the mid to late sixteenth century. The site of the find, whatever the original purpose of the building, lay close by a malthouse with maltmill and 'millehouse', listed in the inventory of goods and chattels of Bartholomew Brind on his death in 1671.5 Brind was the pro- prietor: there would have been a miller installed in the property itself.

Wroughton Parish Council supports the view of the CPRE that this will mean that there will be no public consultation and no opportunity to comment on the plans. The Parish Council has already commented on the plans for Junction 16 to the Swindon and Wiltshire Transport Body and would like to reiterate the following comments: 1. Wroughton Parish Council would question the design of M4 Junction 16 Improvement. The main beneficiary would be traffic traveling from Royal Wootton Bassett to Wharf Road as it would not have to circumnavigate the whole roundabout. The extent to which this will aid traffic flow is not quantified, but Wroughton Parish Council believes that it will be negligible. The design would appear to provide little benefit to the current traffic flows. 2. Wroughton Parish Council would also strongly agree with CPRE and others that the concentration on road schemes providing short term relief is not a sound or sustainable direction for the SWLTB to pursue and that the rail schemes at Royal Wootton Bassett, Wilton and Corsham should be prioritised and pursued with far more vigour.
