  • Cropping Systems and Land Use in Sylhet Region
Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 273-288, 2017 Cropping Systems and Land Use in Sylhet Region M A Muttaleb1*, S M Shahidullah1, M Nasim1 and A Saha1 ABSTRACT Towards the sustainable food security for a particular area, the policymakers, researchers, extension and development agents need the detailed information of cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity. Sylhet, a potential region of enormous potentiality of growing crops across the haor area lying below the northeastern Himalyan foothills experience the highest rainfall in the world to make the basin prone to flashflood. That is why, a study was conducted in the region considering all the upazillas during 2016 using the pretested semi-structured questionnaire and validated by appropriate informants with a view to documenting the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity in the region. As per the study the region is dominated by the rice based cropping pattern. The non-rice based cropping pattern are either few or the area under those cropping patterns are not enough to satisfy the non-rice food requirement of people of the region. Beside these, the cropping patterns and crop diversity appeared as below the expected level. Therefore, much thrust is needed to initiate research and development activities to diversify the single or double-cropped cropping pattern with the introduction of appropriate crops and crop varieties even other non-crop agricultural commodities. Key words: Cropping pattern, land use intensity, diversity index and Sylhet basin INTRODUCTION agricultural region is a complex region with a multitude of diverse micro-environments (FAO, The cropping pattern is an important indicator 1988) with variable landscape ranged from hills of agricultural land use.

In this reality, Upazila system, as an intermediate tier local government unit, is reestablished under the Upazila Parishad Act 2009. This Act is the basis of the formation and function of the Upazila Parishad. In this study, survey method has been applied to primary data collection from two upazila (Sylhet Sadar Upazila and Kanaighat Upazila) in Sylhet district. The study finds that the existing upazila parishad activities do not meet the demand of the people. Citizen’s trust on the Upazila Parishad is very low. The study also finds some other challenges, including unskilled manpower, proper planning and a lack of financial resouces. Moreover, the officials are not professional and their behaviors are not good while performing their duties. As like previous years, SRS is publishing a report after conducting a yearly survey – the ninth in the series. Though newspaper is the main source, we have also accumulated some information from online media and through personal contact with workers representative organizations. This year 26 newspapers (15 national and 11 regional) were monitored and the present report includes information on workplace deaths (as well as injuries that took place in the same incident that resulted in the deaths) throughout 2019. We carry out a considerable number of details information collections on workplace accidents that results death or serious injuries as part of our work on assisting families and injured workers in obtaining compensation. We realize that many workers die from other means - on the way to seeking work, in political protests or in house fires etc – but these are not related to their work and so are not included in this report.

International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Index Copernicus Value (2016): 79.57 | Impact Factor (2017): 7.296 Prospectivity of Hydrocarbon of Zakiganj Area, Sylhet, Bangladesh Rabeya Basri Manager, Geophysical Division, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX), BAPEX Bhabon, 4 Kawran Bazar, Dhaka 1215, Bangladesh Abstract: The southern part of Zakiganj prospect is one of the remaining undrilled potential structure and suitable for hydrocarbon entrapment in Surma Basin. The fold belt is characterized by series of meridional to submeridional folds and extends into the Indian territory of Assam, Tripura, and Mizoram to the east. Considering Tripura and Assam states of India, now exploration targets would be along nose and flanks of major plunging anticlines where prospects are segmented by transverse fault. The surface geology of Zakiganj is covered by young gravelly sand, alluvial silt and clay. Geology of Fenchuganj gas field is similar to that of other fields situated in Surma Basin and reservoirs are covered with Miocene sediments. In Zakiganj prospect the source rock is probably Jenum Formation (Barail Group) of Oligocene age. The reservoirs rock is Mio-Pliocene age Sandstones of Bhuban and BokaBil Formation. Upper Marine Shale is clearly recognized from contour map and supposed to be a regional vertical seal in this area. The traps of fold belts are formed by the anticlinal folds along transverse fault. Intra-formational seals are also recognized from Fenchuganj well data. From Google earth image and subsurface contour map, the best possible prospect might be against transverse fault. Keywords: Zakiganj Prospect, Hydrocarbon Trap, Surma Basin, Transverse Fault 1.
