Doctor Strange Comics As Post-Fantasy
Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Karen Swenson, Chair Nancy A. Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts. -

Abu-Umar al-Baghdadi Views 'Dividends and Losses' After Four Years of 'Jihad' April 17, 2007 [Please note: Images may have been removed from this document. Page numbers have been added.] Terrorism: New Audiotape by Abu-Umar al-Baghdadi, amir of the Islamic State of Iraq On 17 April, a jihadist posts a 42-minute audiotape by Abu-Umar al-Baghdadi, amir of the Islamic State of Iraq, released by Al-Furqan Media Production. The audiotape is entitled: "The Harvest of the Years in the Land of the Monotheists." The first five minutes of the tape feature religious chanting and excerpts highlighting certain segments of Al-Baghdadi's speech. The website posts several links to the audiotape. The following is a translation of Al-Baghdadi's speech: God be praised. We laud Him, we beseech help from Him and ask His forgiveness; we seek God's protection against the evils and mischief of our souls and from the bad results of our deeds. Whoever is guided by God cannot be misled by anybody, and whoever is denied guidance will find nobody to guide him. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except God, the One, without any partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. God is great, God is great, God is great. All praise is due God. God told us what was true, granted victory to His soldiers, and defeated the Confederates. Allah is greater than every arrogant tyrant. Allah is greater than the plotting of enemy and machinations of the cowards. -

The Jewish Comic Book Industry, 1933-1954
“THE WHOLE FURSHLUGGINER OPERATION”: THE JEWISH COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY, 1933-1954 By Sebastian T. Mercier A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History – Doctor of Philosophy 2018 ABSTRACT “THE WHOLE FURSHLUGGINER OPERATION”: THE JEWISH COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY, 1933-1954 By Sebastian T. Mercier Over the course of the twentieth century, the comic book industry evolved from an amateur operation into a major institution of American popular culture. Comic books, once considered mere cultural ephemera or quite simply “junk,” became a major commodity business. The comic book industry emerged out of the pulp magazine industry. According to industry circulation data, new comic book releases increased from 22 in 1939 to 1125 titles by the end of 1945. Comic book scholars have yet to adequately explain the roots of this historical phenomenon, particularly its distinctly Jewish composition. Between the years of 1933 and 1954, the comic book industry operated as a successful distinct Jewish industry. The comic book industry emerged from the pulp magazine trade. Economic necessity, more than any other factor, attracted Jewish writers and artists to the nascent industry. Jewish publishers adopted many of the same business practices they inherited from the pulps. As second-generation Jews, these young men shared similar experiences growing up in New York City. Other creative industries actively practiced anti-Semitic hiring procedures. Many Jewish artists came to comic book work with very little professional experience in cartooning and scripting. The comic book industry allowed one to learn on the job. The cultural world comic books emerged out of was crucially important to the industry’s development. -
