Anthony Lianzuala took over as the New Controller General of Accounts Mr. Anthony Lianzuala took over as the New Controller General of Accounts with effect from May 1. Mr Lianzuala worked at higher positions in the Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. Mr Lianzuala was the first Director of training institute in the field of Public Financial Management and Accounting in the North-East named INGAF-NER, based in Aizawl, Mizoram. He was instrumental in computerising the functions of the State Treasuries of Mizoram. He has also served in Mizoram as Secretary in various departments including Agricultural Marketing, Border Trade and Relief & Rehabilitation. 2. Kharge replaced Congress leader K V Thomas as new Chairman of Public Accounts Committee of Parliament Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge became the new Chairman of the 21-member Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. He replaced Congress leader K V Thomas. The Parliamentary panel is traditionally headed by an opposition leader. The Committee on Public Accounts is the oldest Parliamentary committee that examines the accounts showing the appropriation of sums granted by Parliament for expenditure of the government and such other accounts of autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies. Shobana Kamineni appointed as the new CII President The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) announced new office-bearers for the year 2017-18. Ms Shobana Kamineni, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., has assumed office as the new President of CII. She takes over from Dr Naushad Forbes, Co-Chairman, Forbes Marshall Limited. Mr Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman, Bharti Enterprises, is the new President Designate, CII. Mr Uday Kotak, Executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited is the new Vice President of CII. 4. Soumen Ghosh appointed as MD - Financial Services of Bharti Enterprises Bharti Enterprises has appointed Soumen Ghosh as the Managing Director (MD) of its financial services business which includes the insurance businesses, namely Bharti AXA Life Insurance Co. Ltd and Bharti AXA General Insurance Co. Ltd. Prior to this, Mr Ghosh was Executive Director and Group Chief Executive Officer at Reliance Capital. Yusra Mardini appointed UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, announced the appointment of Syrian refugee and Olympic athlete Yusra Mardini as a Goodwill Ambassador. Braj Bihari Kumar appointed as new chairman of ICSSR Braj Bihari Kumar replaced economist S K Thorat and became new chairman of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). Braj Bihari Kumar has been editor of quarterly journals Dialogue and Chintan Srijan. He has been appointed by HRD Ministry for a period of three years. Braj Bihari Kumar has written, edited and co- authored 136 books and has been founding member of Astha Bharati, a NGO dedicated in promoting the “India’s unity and integrity.” 7. Cabinet approved appointment of Chiefs for Coffee and Tea Boards Prabhat Kamal Bezboruah and M S Boje Gowda were appointed as chairmen of the Tea Board and the Coffee Board by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. At present, Prabhat Kamal Bezboruah is a leading tea association industrialist. He has previously served as the chairman of Assam Tea Planters’ Association. He will serve till November 1, 2018. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

    COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

    Journal of Culture, Society and Development www.iiste.org ISSN 2422-8400 An International Peer-reviewed Journal Vol.39, 2018 The ‘Item Number’ in Indian Cinema: Deconstructing the Paradox Isha Jain (Corresponding author) National Law School of India University, Bangalore, India Abstract The “item number” is a hyper-sexualised song-and-dance performance that is characteristic to mainstream Bollywood cinema. When viewed in the context of a general tendency towards the censorship of public depictions of sexualized women in other spheres of the Indian polity, the ubiquity and popularity of item numbers reflects a confounding cultural paradox. The aim of this article is to deconstruct this paradox, by identifying the narrative structures and plot devices employed by film-makers to market these performances without suffering the disapproval of either the Indian State apparatus or the purportedly prudish Indian cinema- goer. Introduction The Indian State, through both its formal and informal centres of power, continues to burden the Indian woman with the charge of guarding national pride, culture, and morality.1 The defiling of the Indian woman, synonymous with her sexualisation, is the defiling of India. This parallel is evident in the title of “Mother India”, a 1957 film centred around a de-sexualised, self-sacrificial female protagonist intended to be emblematic of both the ideal Indian woman and of India herself.2 Yet, the Indian film industry has succeeded at carving out a niche for the commodification and sale of female sexuality within a broader milieu characterised by the disapprobation of that very sexuality. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the “item number”,3 a hyper-sexualised cinematic performance that is both paradoxically and quintessentially Bollywood.

    Chapter X EDUCATION AND SPORTS Ancient educational institutions in the form of agraharas, Shivapuris, brahmapuris, ghatikasthanas and mathas existed in the State following traditional methods of teaching. Mathas were residential schools where the teacher and the taught lived together. Agraharas and brahmapuris were settlements of scholars and separate arrangements existed there to teach the three R’s. Ghatikasthanas were meant for conferring degrees or certifying scholarships. Rich families engaged teachers to teach their children privately. There also grew institutions like Koolimatha, Salimatha or Odisuvamatha where a teacher ran a school either in his house or in a public place like a temple or a choultry and was paid in cash or kind during the harvesting season. Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught and much of the learning was through memorising or repeating the sentences or verses collectively. The cane played a major role in disciplining mischievous pupils including those who were slow of learning. Vocational learning was mostly hereditary. A boy who was to pursue the career of an accountant or a government servant was sent to a shop or government office after he mastered the three R’s. He was to be a probationer for long years. Government servants initiated their own young wards into their offices and were later absorbed into service. Administrative service was also hereditary before the advent of the British and for long even after. The offices of a Shanbhag (village accountant) is a case to remind the old practice. The

The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society.
