Program Highlights: The UBC Division of Medical Biochemistry offers a strong and varied program of clinical and laboratory based training leading to eligibility for Royal College Certification in both Medical Biochemistry and internal medicine. In addition, UBC offers the opportunity to pursue an academic career in the form of “clinician-educator” or “physician-scientist”, depending on the interest of the trainee. We encourage a tailored approach to training to meet the individual needs and interests of each subspecialty resident.

For more information, please see the UBC Medical Biochemistry Website at: http://pathology.ubc.ca/educational-programs/residency-training/medical-biochemistry/

Program Curriculum Once accepted into the program, trainees will complete three years of clinical training in internal medicine followed by two years of training in laboratory medicine. During the first three years of internal medicine training, annual 4 week medical biochemistry electives are required.

Further information about these first three years can be obtained by review of the UBC internal medicine website: http://medicine.med.ubc.ca/education/residency-vancouver/ AND http://medicine.med.ubc.ca/education/victoria-program/

The laboratory component of the UBC Medical Biochemistry program consists of two years of laboratory based training complemented by select clinical rotations:

The first year is focussed on a general introduction to the laboratory techniques and methodologies that underlie the clinical chemistry testing that is provided in the hospital affiliated chemistry laboratories at VGH, St Paul’s Hospital and the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre. There are also specific blocks dedicated to the prinicples of chromatography / mass spectrometry and to molecular diagnostic testing.

The second year is divided into senior rotations at St Paul’s Hospital and VGH as well as specialized laboratory rotations in clinical or research labs that are tailored to the individual’s career aspirations.

Over the course of the two year lab program, trainees are expected to participate in a research project and to maintain clinical skills by participation in clinical rotations such as a cardiovascular disease risk prevention clinic or equivalent. In both cases, these requirements may be met by completing dedicated blocks (1 block for research, 2 blocks for clinical electives), or by completing an equivalent amount of research / clinical time over the 26 blocks of the program.
