DECEMBER 2016 The Blind Astronomer's Daughter John Pipkin

A transporting new historical novel from the acclaimed author of Woodsburner.

Description In late-eighteenth-century Ireland, accidental stargazer Caroline Ainsworth learns that her life is not what it seems when her father, Arthur, throws himself from his rooftop observatory. Caroline had often assisted her father with his observations, in pursuit of an unknown planet; when astronomer William Herschel discovered Uranus, Caroline could only watch helplessly as unremitting jealousy drove Arthur to madness. Now, gone blind from staring at the sun, he has chosen death over a darkened life.

Grief-stricken, Caroline abandons the vain search, leaves Ireland for London, and tries to forget her love for Finnegan O'Siodha, the tinkering blacksmith who was helping her father build a telescope larger than his rival's. But her father has left her more than the wreck of that unfinished instrument: his cryptic atlas holds the secret to finding a new world at the edge of the sky. As Caroline reluctantly resumes her father's work and confronts her own longings, Ireland is swept into , and Caroline and Finnegan are plunged into its violence.

This is a novel of the obsessions of the age: scientific inquiry, geographic discovery, political reformation, but above all, astronomy, the mapping of the solar system and beyond. It is a novel of the quest for knowledge and for human connection -- rich, far-reaching, and unforgettable.

About the Author John Pipkin was born in Baltimore and received his Ph.D. in British Literature from Rice University. His first novel, Woodsburner, was named one of the best books of 2009 by the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Bloomsbury DECEMBER 2016 Mr. Eternity Aaron Thier, introduction by Miriam Gillinson

A novel of exuberance and ambition, spanning one thousand years of high-seas adventure, environmental and cultural catastrophe, and enduring love.

Description Key West, 2016. Sea levels are rising, coral reefs are dying. In short, everything is going to hell. It's here that two young filmmakers find something to believe in: an old sailor who calls himself Daniel Defoe and claims to be five hundred and sixty years old.

In fact, old Dan is in the prime of his life -- an incredible, perhaps eternal American life. The story unfold over the course of a millennium, picking up in the sixteenth century in the Viceroyalty of New Granada and continuing into the twenty- sixth, where, in the future Democratic Federation of Mississippi States, Dan serves as an advisor to the King of St. Louis. Some things remain constant throughout the centuries, and being on the edge of ruin may be one. In 1560, the Spaniards have destroyed the Aztec and Inca civilizations. In 2500, we've destroyed our own: the cities of the Atlantic coast are underwater, the union has fallen apart, and cars, plastics, and air conditioning are relegated to history. But there are other constants too: love, humor, and old Dan himself, always adapting and inspiring others with dreams of a better life.

An ingenious, hilarious, and genre-bending page-turner, Mr. Eternity is multiple novels in one. Together they form an uncommon work -- about our changing planet and its remarkable continuities.

About the Author Aaron Thier is the author of the novel The Ghost Apple, a semifinalist for the 2015 Thurber Prize for American Humor. He writes a column, Food & Consequences, for Lucky Peach and he is a regular book critic for the Nation. He lives with his wife in Massachusetts. www.aaron-thier.com

Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 Lady of Fortune Graham Masterton

Description They were shrewd and uncompromising, the Watsons, and all the arrogance and acumen with which old Tom Watson had built up the family's banking business was there in his children and grandchildren. Their methods were as aggressive as their lifestyle was opulent, and they could stab each other in the back or drive a competitor to ruin as calmly as a bank clerk counting out change. In time, their empire was to encompass the great financial capitals of the world. As it grew, so too did their power and influence.

First published in 1984, Lady of Fortune is the story of the Watson family, and of the remarkable woman at its head. Graham Masterton has created a pulsating saga of seven decades of ambition and ruthlessness, of public feuding and private passions, of a will to succeed so powerful that not even the ties of kinship could hope to contain it.

About the Author Graham Masterton (born 16 January 1946 in Edinburgh) is a British horror author. Originally editor of Mayfair and the British edition of Penthouse, Graham Masterton's first novel The Manitou was released in 1976. This novel was adapted in 1978 for the film The Manitou. Further works garnered critical acclaim, including a Special Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America for Charnel House and a Silver Medal by the West Coast Review of Books for Mirror. He is also the only non-French winner of the prestigious Prix Julia Verlanger for his novel Family Portrait, an imaginative reworking of the Oscar Wilde novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Masterton was also the editor of Scare Care, a horror anthology published for the benefit of abused children in Europe and the USA.

Masterton's novels often contain visceral sex and horror. In addition to his novels Masterton has written a number of sex instruction books, including How To Drive Your Man Wild In Bed and Wild Sex for New Lovers.

Masterton currently lives in Surrey, England. His wife and agent Wiescka died on 27 April 2011, aged 65.

Oneworld DECEMBER 2016 War Primer Bertolt Brecht

A terrifying series of short poems by one of the world's leading playwrights, set to images of the Second World War

Description In this singular book written during the Second World War, the renowned playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht has taken photographs from newspapers and popular magazines and montaged short epigraph poems to each, in a unique attempt to understand the truth of war using mass media.

From catastrophic bombings, to propaganda portraits of leading Nazis, to scenes of unbearable tragedy on the battlefield, this is an anthology of horror, but accompanied by Brecht's razor-sharp deconstruction of what we see, through his taut and direct poems. Part Dada project, part proto- Situationist detournement, this book reveals the horror of war, and the cynicism in which it can be presented to us.

BLM Overlook DECEMBER 2016 Powers of Darkness: The Lost Version of Dracula Bram Stoker

The first ever translation into English of a newly discovered Icelandic adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic gothic novel, Dracula.

Description Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery: In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker's world famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, 'Powers of Darkness'), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself.

Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker's preface to the book. However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into Asmundsson's story. In 2014, researcher Hans de Roos dove into the full text of Makt Myrkranna, only to discover that Asmundsson hadn't merely translated Dracula but had penned an entirely new version of the story, with all new characters and a totally reworked plot. The resulting narrative is one that is shorter, punchier, more erotic, and perhaps even more suspenseful than Stoker's Dracula.

Incredibly, Makt Myrkranna has never been translated or even read outside of Iceland until now. Powers of Darkness will amaze and entertain legions of fans of Gothic literature, horror, and vampire fiction. Contains a forward by Dacre Stoker, Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew and author of the bestseller Dracula: The Un-dead, and easy-to-read story annotations that add fascinating insight into the differences between this work and Stoker's original Dracula.

About the Author Hans Corneel de Roos is an independent researcher specialising in French and British art of the second half of the 19th Century. He is author of The Ultimate Dracula and numerous other articles on Dracula. He is a recipient of the Research Award of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula. He lives in Munich.

Alma Classics DECEMBER 2016 We Chose to Speak of War and Strife: The World of the Foreign Correspondent John Simpson

From distinguished foreign correspondent John Simpson, a fascinating history of what it is to risk life and limb to bring home news of the troubled world.

Description In corners of the globe where fault-lines seethe into bloodshed and civil war, foreign correspondents have, for hundreds of years, been engaged in uncovering the latest news and - despite obstacles bureaucratic, political, violent - reporting it by whatever means available. It's a working life that is difficult, exciting and undeniably glamorous.

We Chose to Speak of War and Strife brings us pivotal moments in our history - from the Crimean War to Vietnam; the siege of Sarajevo to the fall of Baghdad - through the eyes of those who risked life and limb to witness them first hand, and the astonishing tales of what it took to report them. These stories celebrate an endangered tradition. Where once despatches were trusted to the hands of a willing sea- captain, telegraph operator or stranger in an airport queue prepared to spirit a can of undeveloped film back to London, today the digital realm has transformed the relaying of the news - even if the work of gathering it in the field has changed little.

Weaving the tales of the greats of yesterday and today, such as Martha Gellhorn, Ernest Hemingway, Don McCullin and Marie Colvin, with extraordinary accounts from his own lifetime on the frontlines, this is a deeply personal book from a master of the profession, the most distinguished foreign correspondent of our time.

About the Author John Simpson is the BBC's World Affairs Editor. In a BBC career spanning fifty years he has reported on major world events from all corners of the globe, and was made a CBE in the Gulf War honours list in 1991. He has twice been the Royal Television Society's Journalist of the Year, and has won three BAFTAs, the News and Current Affairs award in 2000 for his coverage, with the BBC News team, of the Kosovo conflict, and, in 2001, an Emmy for his report on the fall of Price: $29.99 (NZ$32.99) Kabul. Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 Pen & Ink: Tattoos and the Stories Behind Them Wendy MacNaughton and Isaac Fitzgerald

Together, [these pictures and stories] do the work of great literature-gathering a force so true they ultimately tell a story that includes us all. -Cheryl Strayed, from the Introduction

Description Why did you get that tattoo?

Every tattoo tells a story, whether the ink is meaningful or the result of a misguided decision made at the age of fourteen, representative of the wearer's true self or the accidental consequence of a bender. These most permanent and intimate of body adornments are hidden by pants legs and shirttails, emblazoned on knuckles, or tucked inside mouths. They are battle scars and beauty marks, totems and mementos.

Pen & Ink grants us access to the tattoos-and the stories behind them-of writers Cheryl Strayed, Tao Lin, and Roxane Gay; rockers in the bands Korn, Otep, and Five Finger Death Punch; and even a porn star. But it also illuminates the tattoos of the ordinary people living in our midst-from professors to thrift store salespeople, cafe owners to librarians, union organizers to administrators-and their extraordinary lives.

Curated and edited by Isaac Fitzgerald, who sports twelve tattoos himself, each story is like being let in on . . . secrets by . . . strangers who passed you on the street or sat across from you on the train (Strayed) and features Wendy MacNaughton's gorgeously rendered full-color illustrations of the tattoos on black-and-white drawings of the bearer's body. At its heart, beneath its colorful skin, Pen & Ink is an exploration of the decision to scar one's self with a symbol and a story.

Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 The Man Who Knew: The Life and Times of Alan Greenspan Sebastian Mallaby

The definitive biography of one of the most important figures in global finance

Description This is the biography of one of the titans of financial history over the last fifty years. Born in 1926, Alan Greenspan was raised in Manhattan by a single mother and immigrant grandparents during the Great Depression but by quiet force of intellect, rose to become a global financial 'maestro'. Appointed by Ronald Reagan to Chairman of the Federal Reserve, a post he held for eighteen years, he presided over an unprecedented period of stability and low inflation, was revered by economists, adored by investors and consulted by leaders from Beijing to Frankfurt. Both data-hound and eligible society bachelor, Greenspan was a man of contradictions. His great success was to prove the very idea he, an advocate of the Gold standard, doubted: that the discretionary judgements of a money-printing central bank could stabilise an economy. He resigned in 2006, having overseen tumultuous changes in the world's most powerful economy. Yet when the great crash happened only two years later many blamed him, even though he had warned early on of irrational exuberance in the market place. Sebastian Mallaby brilliantly shows the subtlety and complexity of Alan Greenspan's legacy. Full of beautifully rendered high-octane political infighting, hard hitting dialogue and stories, The Man Who Knew is superbly researched, enormously gripping and the story of the making of modern finance.

About the Author Sebastian Mallaby is the Paul Volcker Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations and a Washington Post columnist. He spent thirteen years on the Economist, covering international finance in London and serving as bureau chief in southern Africa, Japan and Washington. From 1999 to 2007 he was a member of the editorial board of the Washington Post, focusing on globalisation and political economy. He lives in Washington with his wife, Zanny Minton Beddoes, the economics editor of the Economist.

Bloomsbury DECEMBER 2016 Of Arms and Artists: The American Revolution through Painters' Eyes Paul Staiti

A vibrant and original perspective on the American Revolution through the stories of the five great artists whose paintings animated the new American republic.

Description The images accompanying the founding of the United States--of honored Founders, dramatic battle scenes, and seminal moments--gave visual shape to Revolutionary events and symbolized an entirely new concept of leadership and government. Since then they have endured as indispensable icons, serving as historical documents and timeless reminders of the nation's unprecedented beginnings.

As Paul Staiti reveals in Of Arms and Artists, the lives of the five great American artists of the Revolutionary period-- Charles Willson Peale, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, Benjamin West, and Gilbert Stuart--were every bit as eventful as those of the Founders with whom they continually interacted, and their works contributed mightily to America's founding spirit. Living in a time of breathtaking change, each in his own way came to grips with the history being made by turning to brushes and canvases, the results often eliciting awe and praise, and sometimes scorn. Ever since the passing of the last eyewitnesses to the Revolution, their imagery has connected Americans to 1776, allowing us to interpret and reinterpret the nation's beginning generation after generation. The collective stories of these five artists open a fresh window on the Revolutionary era, making more human the figures we have long honored as our Founders, and deepening our understanding of the whirlwind out of which the United States emerged.

About the Author Paul Staiti teaches at Mount Holyoke College and is the author of several books and essays on American artists. He has co-curated exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The recipient of three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and a two-time Senior Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Staiti has spoken internationally on the intersection of American art and history. He lives in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 Faustian Bargains: Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace in the Robber Baron Culture of Texas Joan Mellen

Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace crossed paths only briefly; but Wallace's life, especially one violent episode and its intricate aftermath, illuminates the dark side of our 36th president.

Description Perhaps no president has a more ambiguous reputation than LBJ. A brilliant tactician, he maneuvered colleagues and turned bills into law better than anyone. But he was trailed by a legacy of underhanded dealings, from his stolen Senate election in 1948 to kickbacks he artfully concealed from deals engineered with Texas wheeler-dealer Billie Sol Estes and defense contractors like his longtime supporter Brown & Root. On the verge of investigation, Johnson was reprieved when he became president upon JFK's assassination. Among the remaining mysteries has been LBJ's relationship to Mac Wallace who, in 1951, shot a Texas man having an affair with LBJ's loose-cannon sister Josefa, also Wallace's lover. When arrested, Wallace cooly said I work for Johnson.I need to get back to Washington. Charged with murder, he was overnight defended by LBJ's powerful lawyer John Cofer, and though convicted, amazingly received a suspended sentence. He then got high-security clearance from LBJ friend and defense contractor D.H. Byrd, which the Office of Naval Intelligence tried to revoke for 11 years without success.

Using crucial Life magazine and Naval Intelligence files and the unredacted FBI files on Mac Wallace, never before utilized by others, investigative writer Joan Mellen skillfully connects these two disparate Texas lives and lends stark credence to the dark side of Lyndon Johnson that has largely gone unsubstantiated.

About the Author Joan Mellen has written more than twenty books on subjects ranging from history and true crime to biography and sports. Her profile of then-Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight was a New York Times bestseller, and her joint biography of Dashiell Hammett and Lillian Hellman was highly praised. She is a professor of English and Creative Writing at Temple University, and lives in New Jersey.

Bloomsbury Pb DECEMBER 2016 Genius At Play: The Curious Mind of John Horton Conway Siobhan Roberts

John Horton Conway [is] perhaps the greatest living genius unknown to the general public.--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Description John Horton Conway is a singular mathematician with a rock star's charisma and a polymath's boundless curiosity-- Archimedes, Mick Jagger, Salvador Dali, and Richard Feynman all rolled into one. He also has a sly sense of humor and a burning desire to explain everything about the world to everyone in it. Born in Liverpool in 1937, Conway discovered the Conway groups in mathematical symmetry and invented the aptly named surreal numbers as well as the cult classic Game of Life, which demonstrates how simplicity generates complexity, providing an analogy not only for mathematics but for the entire universe. As a mathemagician at Princeton, he used cards, ropes, dice, coat hangers, and even the occasional Slinky as props to illustrate what was happening in his powerful brain. Conway granted Roberts full access to his idiosyncratic life and mind, though not without the occasional grumble: Oh hell, he'd say. You're not going to put that in the book. Are you?!?

About the Author Siobhan Roberts is a science writer and winner of four National Magazine Awards. While writing this book, she was a Director's Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and a Fellow at the Leon Levy Center for Biography, at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York. Her first book, KING OF INFINITE SPACE, won the Mathematical Association of America's Euler Prize for expanding the public's view of mathematics. She lives in Toronto, Canada.

Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 A Card From Angela Carter Susannah Clapp

An enchanting, compact and eloquent portrait of the beloved author by her friend and literary executor

Description 'There will be other, bigger biographies, but none more evocative than this sampler precisely stitched in literary petit-point' The Times

Angela Carter was one of the most vivid voices of the twentieth century. When she died in 1992 at the age of fifty-one, she had published fifteen books of fiction and essays; outrage at her omission from any Booker Prize shortlists led to the foundation of the Orange Prize.

Angela Carter sent her great friend Susannah Clapp postcards from all over the world - missives which form a paper trail through her life. The pictures she chose were sometimes domestic, sometimes flights of fantasy and surrealism. The messages were always pungent. Here, Susannah Clapp uses postcards - the emails of the twentieth century - to evoke Angela Carter's anarchic intelligence, her fierce politics, the richness of her language, her ribaldry, the great swoops of her imagination, and to say something about her life. Intimate, funny and unexpected, this is a miniature portrait of a unique artist.

About the Author Susannah Clapp is the literary executor for Angela Carter and Bruce Chatwin, and is the author of With Chatwin, an acclaimed portrait of Bruce Chatwin. She helped to found the London Review of Books, has worked as a publisher's reader and editor, as the radio critic of the Sunday Times and as the theatre critic of the New Statesman. She has reviewed novels and non-fiction for the Times Literary Supplement, the New Yorker, the Sunday Times, the Observer, the London Review of Books, the New Statesman and the Independent on Sunday. She is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 3's Nightwaves, and has been the theatre critic of the Observer since 1997. Susannah Clapp lives in London.

Bloomsbury Pb DECEMBER 2016 Bring Back the King: The New Science of De-extinction Helen Pilcher

A unique blend of the science of de-extinction, cloning and comedy

Description If you could bring back one living being from the whole of the history of time, what would you choose? Comedian and former stem-cell biologist Helen Pilcher has thought about this problem, a lot. In Bring back the King, Helen explains the cutting-edge science that makes the resurrection of extinct animals a very real possibility, and highlights her choices from eras gone by, from the King of the Dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex, to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley,

From dinosaurs to Dodos, Neanderthals to rock legends, Bring Back the King explains how the burgeoning field of DNA science is being used to help resurrect not just individual animals but entire species from their stony graves.

Funny, intriguing and informative, Bring Back the King describes current initiatives and future plans to restore deceased animals, and uses both science and willful irreverence to assess how these genetic Lazarus's might fare in their brave new world. Could a pet dinosaur be trained to roll over? Would Neanderthals enjoy opera? Could a returning Dodo seek vengeance upon humanity?

Blending the very latest de-extinction technology with cloning, dinosaurs with rock legends, and hard-core popular science with plenty of gags, Bring Back the King is a book that you will simply have to read.

About the Author Helen Pilcher was a stand-up comedian for more than ten years, before the arrival of children meant she couldn't physically stay awake beyond 9pm. During this time, she performed at the Edinburgh comedy festival, at London's Comedy Store, and at various smoky pubs and clubs across Britain. She was a finalist for Jongleurs New Act of the Year (1998, 1999), the BBC New Stand Up Competition (1999) and Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny (1999). Sigma DECEMBER 2016 A is for Arsenic Kathryn Harkup

Fourteen novels. Fourteen poisons. Just because it's fiction doesn't mean it's all made-up ...

Description Agatha Christie revelled in the use of poison to kill off unfortunate victims in her books; indeed, she employed it more than any other murder method, with the poison itself often being a central part of the novel. Her choice of deadly substances was far from random - the characteristics of each often provide vital clues to the discovery of the murderer. With gunshots or stabbings the cause of death is obvious, but this is not the case with poisons. How is it that some compounds prove so deadly, and in such tiny amounts?

Christie's extensive chemical knowledge provides the backdrop for A is for Arsenic, in which Kathryn Harkup investigates the poisons used by the murderer in fourteen classic Agatha Christie mysteries. It looks at why certain chemicals kill, how they interact with the body, the cases that may have inspired Christie, and the feasibility of obtaining, administering and detecting these poisons, both at the time the novel was written and today. A is for Arsenic is a celebration of the use of science by the undisputed Queen of Crime.

About the Author Kathryn Harkup is a chemist and author. Kathryn completed a doctorate on her favourite chemicals, phosphines, and went on to further postdoctoral research before realising that talking, writing and demonstrating science appealed a bit more than hours slaving over a hot fume- hood. For six years she ran the outreach in engineering, computing, physics and maths at the University of Surrey, which involved writing talks on science topics that would appeal to bored teenagers (anything disgusting or dangerous was usually the most popular). Kathryn is now a freelance science communicator delivering talks and workshops on the quirky side of science.

Sigma DECEMBER 2016 Suspicious Minds: Why We Believe Conspiracy Theories Rob Brotherton

The psychology of our belief in conspiracy theories

Description 'A first class book' Sunday Times

We're all conspiracy theorists. Some of us just hide it better than others.

Conspiracy theorists do not wear tin-foil hats (for the most part). They are not just a few kooks lurking on the paranoid fringes of society with bizarre ideas about shape-shifting reptilian aliens running society in secret. They walk among us. They are us.

Everyone loves a good conspiracy. Yet conspiracy theories are not a recent invention. And they are not always a harmless curiosity. In Suspicious Minds, Rob Brotherton explores the history and consequences of conspiracism, and delves into the research that offers insights into why so many of us are drawn to implausible, unproven and unproveable conspiracy theories. They resonate with some of our brain's built-in quirks and foibles, and tap into some of our deepest desires, fears, and assumptions about the world.

The fascinating and often surprising psychology of conspiracy theories tells us a lot - not just why we are drawn to theories about sinister schemes, but about how our minds are wired and, indeed, why we believe anything at all. Conspiracy theories are not some psychological aberration - they're a predictable product of how brains work. This book will tell you why, and what it means.

Of course, just because your brain's biased doesn't always mean you're wrong. Sometimes conspiracies are real. Sometimes, paranoia is prudent.

About the Author Rob Brotherton is an academic psychologist and science writer who likes to walk on the weird side of psychology. Sigma DECEMBER 2016 The Weakest Link: Why Your Employees Might Be Your Biggest Cyber Risk Jeremy Swinfen Green and Professor Paul Dorey

The Weakest Link shows how information security has become the responsibility of individual employees and shows what organisations and individuals can do to protect company systems and data.

Description The Weakest Link looks at one of the biggest issues in cyber security: how to protect organisations from their own employees. Many cyber threats don't involve hackers using clever software to penetrate company networks; threats can often involve employees acting in ways that, accidentally or deliberately, leak information or damage assets without a hacker being involved at all. Emerging technologies and behavioural changes - driven by cloud computing and people using their own smartphones and tablets for work - are starting to make these threats more common and far more serious.

Written to help anyone understand how information security has become the responsibility of individual employees, it shows exactly what they can do to protect company systems and data. Effective solutions need to go beyond simple security awareness and show how to create a complete culture of security. Individuals can then use this learned behaviour to keep themselves digitally safe at work and in their personal lives.

About the Author Jeremy Swinfen Green has worked in digital business for over 20 years, with a specialism in social media risk. He is a member of the Finance and Performance board of TechUK (the trade body for the UK's technology industry).

Paul Dorey has worked in the cyber-security industry for over 25 years, including senior posts at Barclays, BP and GlaxoSmithKline. He is Chairman Emeritus at the Institute of Information Security Professionals, and is a Visiting Professor at Royal Holloway College, University of London.

A Good Disruption describes how disruptive technology can be used to combat the economic challenges of our age - faltering growth, rising inequality and environmental depletion - and sets out an inspirational vision of a more effective and sustainable growth model.

Description Disruptive technology is one of the defining economic trends of our age, transforming one major industry after another. But what is the true impact of such disruption on the world's economies, and does it really have the potential to solve global problems such as low growth, inequality and environmental degradation? The provocative answer is that such disruption could indeed solve many of these issues, but that it won't... at least, not on its current trajectory.

A Good Disruption highlights some of the huge costs that are at stake, and argues that managing such disruption will be the defining business challenge of the next decade. In order for us to meet that challenge, the book sets out a bold and inspirational vision for a more robust and sustainable economic model.

Rich in relevant case studies, and incorporating industry examples from around the world, A Good Disruption accomplishes the remarkable feat of synthesizing key contemporary trends into a coherent world view of how to seize the potential of our collective futures. This is essential reading for policy makers, politicians, business executives and social scientists, as well as anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the impact of disruptive technology and how it can be transformed into a major force for the global good.

A stunning visual and numerical tour through sporting debates and ideas.

Description Sport revolves around two things: narrative and numbers. You need the narrative, otherwise why would anyone care about sport? Rivalries, emotions, and sporting legends all require it. But sport also needs numbers. Without them, we have no idea who has won. We need numbers to tell which team is top of the table, or who is the world champion.

Sport Geek is a visual and numerical tour through sporting debates and ideas. Teams in all sports use data to create extraordinary analysis of how their players perform, to assess tactics and to get an edge over arch rivals; but fans are rarely presented with challenging and informative data that would help them to further understand sport.

Find out why Usain Bolt's 200m world record is really a big disappointment, whether big sports stars earn more from prize money or sponsorship, learn what the best sport to make a film about is, and what the Flo-Jo problem is.

In Sport Geek Rob Minto brings together an encyclopaedic knowledge and love of sport, a rigorous and painstaking understanding and research of statistics with passionate and serious analysis. There's nothing academic about the way in which Sport Geek is presented, nor the way Rob has unfolded its many stories, but it has been written with the knowledge of an expert with access to cutting edge quantitative analysis and difficult to uncover data.

With international breadth and appeal and covering almost every imaginable sport, Sport Geek embraces our global enthusiasm for competitive sport and will arm any sports fan with invaluable information that will give the edge in any sporting debate.

The first detailed account of the Festina affair, which ripped apart the 1998 Tour de France and irrevocably changed cycling

Description The Tour de France is always one of the sporting calendar's most spectacular and dramatic events. But the 1998 Tour provided drama like no other. As the opening stages in Ireland unfolded, the Festina team's soigneur Willy Voet was arrested on the French-Belgian border with a car-load of drugs. Raid after police raid followed, with arrest after arrest hammering the Tour. In protest, there were riders' strikes and go-slows, with several squads withdrawing en masse andone expelled. By the time the Tour reached Paris, just 96 of the 189 starters remained. And of those 189 starters, more than a quarter were later reported to have doped. The 1998 'Tour de Farce's' status as one of the most scandal- struck sporting events in history was confirmed.

Voet's arrest was just the beginning of sport's biggest mass doping controversy - what became known as the Festina affair. It all but destroyed professional cycling as the credibility of the entire sport was called into question and the cycling family began to split apart. And yet, ironically, the 1998 Tour was also one of the best races in years.

The End of the Road is the first English-language book to provide in-depth analysis and a colourful evocation of the tumultuous events during the 1998 Tour. Alasdair Fotheringham uncovers, step by step, how the world's biggest bike race sank into a nightmarish series of scandals that left the sport on its knees. BLM Overlook DECEMBER 2016 Do Humankind's Best Days Lie Ahead? Malcolm Gladwell, Steven Pinkner, Matt Ridley and Alain de Botton

Is humanity approaching a Golden Age, driven by technology and ever-closer global networks? Or is the notion of progress an illusion born in the West?

Description From the Enlightenment onwards, the West has had an enduring belief that through the evolution of institutions, innovations, and ideas, the human condition is improving. This process is supposedly accelerating as new technologies, individual freedoms, and the spread of global norms empower individuals and societies around the world. But is progress inevitable? Its critics argue that human civilization has become different, not better, over the last two and a half centuries. What is seen as a breakthrough or innovation in one period becomes a setback or limitation in another. In short, progress is an ideology not a fact; a way of thinking about the world as opposed to a description of reality.

Who is to blame for the failure of the Arab Spring and the rise of Islamic State? The answer lies far closer to home than you might dare imagine...

Description The primary blame for the failure of the Arab Spring and the rise of Islamic extremism must rest with successive US and UK governments. This is the devastating argument put forward by Middle East expert Christopher M. Davidson who has travelled the world to unearth archived government reports, declassified intelligence, leaked secret documents, and to interview former officials, academics, journalists and activists. His aim: to expose how the West has sought to thwart nationalist, socialist and pro-democracy movements in the Middle East for more than a century.

Shadow Wars reveals how the US used Islamic extremists against the Soviet Union during the Cold War and how even after 9/11 the revenue streams of groups like al-Qaeda were left largely intact as the real targets of the 'War on Terror' were the regimes who stood in the way of Western investment. Most shocking for us today, however, is Davidson's argument that US intelligence agencies and their regional clients regard Islamic State, like al-Qaeda before it, as a strategic but volatile asset to be wielded against their enemies in the region. Alarming, provocative and utterly compelling, Shadow Wars is a book that demands to be read - now.

About the Author Christopher Davidson is a Reader in Middle East Politics at Durham University. He is credited with predicting the 2009 Dubai crash and his last book, After the Sheikhs, was one of the Foreign Policy Association's 'most significant books' of 2013.

Oneworld DECEMBER 2016 Game of Queens: The Women Who Ruled Sixteenth-Century Europe Sarah Gristwood

Not even the twentieth century can compare with the sixteenth century's explosion of female rule

Description In sixteenth-century Europe, an extraordinary set of women created a unique culture of feminine power that saw them run the continent for decades. Despite often being on opposing sides of power struggles both armed and otherwise, through family ties and patronage they educated and supported each other in a brutal world where the price of failure was disgrace, exile or even death.

Following the passage of power from mother to daughter and mentor to protege, Gristwood reveals the unorthodox practices these women adopted to avoid patriarchal control and assesses the impact they had on shaping the world around them. Epic in scale, this game of queens is a remarkable spectacle of skill and ingenuity, confronting the challenges faced by women in power - many of which still hold relevant today.

The players in this Game of Queens are: Isabella of Castile, Margaret of Austria, Louise of Savoy, Anne de Beaujeu, Katherine of Aragon, Marguerite of Navarre, Anne Boleyn, Catherine de Medici, Mary Tudor, Elizabeth Tudor, Jeanne d'Albret and Mary Stuart.

About the Author Sarah Gristwood has written bestselling biographies of Arbella Stuart, Elizabeth and Leicester. Her previous book, Blood Sisters, was a dramatic portrait of the women whose dynastic ambitions and rivalries fuelled the Wars of the Roses. She lives in London and Kent.

Oneworld DECEMBER 2016 Stalin Abraham Ascher

A rigorous introduction to the infamous despot and one of the key figures of modern history

Description Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler were both responsible for the deaths of millions of people and for inflicting barbaric cruelty upon many more. Yet while Hitler is readily seen as evil incarnate, Stalin has, broadly speaking, never been subject to quite the same level of vitriol. Distinguished historian Abraham Ascher addresses this issue, and others, head-on in this introductory text.

From Stalin's days as a young Bolshevik idealist to the isolated, paranoid dictator of his final years, Ascher vigorously examines the sources, separating truths from falsehoods to present an unvarnished portrait of the Soviet dictator. For students of history and lay readers alike this is an ideal starting point, providing an incisive study of one of modern history's most infamous figures.

V&A Publications DECEMBER 2016 Garnitures: Vase Sets from National Trust Houses Patricia Ferguson

Garnitures are matching sets of ceramic vases, and this book shows their rise and fall in popularity

Description This exquisite gift book explores the phenomenon of 'garnitures', or matching sets of ceramic vases. From the 1650s such sets were used in elite European interiors as an integral part of the decorative scheme: displayed on chimney-pieces, cupboards, tables or over doors, they 'garnished' the interior and so enhanced the status of the owner.

The fashion began in Europe using mismatched Chinese porcelain beakers and jars. As imports of Chinese porcelain ceased between 1657 and 1683, European potters at Nevers and Delft copied the originally exotic forms, unifying the sets with matching patterns, or with metal mounts. The fashion continued throughout the 1700s, with almost every ceramic manufactory producing examples, but came to its conclusion during the Arts and Crafts period, when the singular vase became the rage and many sets were broken up and dispersed.

This book brings together some of the National Trust's most important sets of garnitures, showing them in their historic context; many have never been published before.

About the Author Patricia F. Ferguson, an adviser on ceramics to the National Trust, has been researching their ceramics collection for a publication on elite ceramic patronage in Britain. She has an MA in Chinese ceramics from the School of Oriental and African Studies and works as a curatorial consultant in the Asian department of the V&A.

V&A Publications DECEMBER 2016 Age of Jihad Patrick Cockburn

Award winning Independent journalist charts the collapse of the Middle East and the rise of Islamic State.

Description This is essential reading for anyone interested in the collapse of the Middle East, and the devastating role of the West in the creation of this hellish crucible. In Age of Jihad Cockburn exposes the dominant conflict of our time-the Sunni-Shia war, and the subsequent origins of ISIS. As he shows this did not explode suddenly in Syria after the Arab Spring as the conventional view holds, but over several years in occupied Iraq. It is in the sectarian conflict that engulfed Iraq following the war of 2003 that patterns were established that would later spill over into Syria with such devastating results. Since July 2014, the dominance of ISIS threatens the stability of the whole region. Cockburn was the first Western commentator to warn of ISIS, so far ahead of everyone else that last year the judges of the British Journalism Awards advised the UK government to 'consider pensioning off the whole of MI6 and hiring Patrick Cockburn instead.' Age of Jihad will be the most in-depth analysis of the failure of the Middle East to date.

About the Author PATRICK COCKBURN is Middle East correspondent for the Independent and has worked previously for the Financial Times. Winner of the Foreign Affairs Journalist of the Year Award 2014.

Philanthro-: Is it always a good thing when the super rich give their money away?

Description The charitable sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the global economy. Nearly half of the more than 85,000 private foundations in the United States have come into being since the year 2000. Just under 5,000 more were established in 2011 alone. This deluge of philanthropy has helped create a world where billionaires wield more power over education policy, global agriculture, and global health than ever before. In No Such Thing as a Free Gift, author and academic Linsey McGoey puts this new golden age of philanthropy under the microscope-paying particular attention to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As large charitable organizations replace governments as the providers of social welfare, their largesse becomes suspect. The businesses fronting the money often create the very economic instability and inequality the foundations are purported to solve. We are entering an age when the ideals of social justice are dependent on the strained rectitude and questionable generosity of the mega-rich.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Molecular Red McKenzie Wark

Radical new critical theory for the twenty-first century: how to think about the Anthropocene

Description In Molecular Red, McKenzie Wark creates philosophical tools for the Anthropocene, our new planetary epoch, in which human and natural forces are so entwined that the future of one determines that of the other.

Wark explores the implications of Anthropocene through the story of two empires, the Soviet and then the American. The fall of the former prefigures that of the latter. From the ruins of these mighty histories, Wark salvages ideas to help us picture what kind of worlds collective labor might yet build. The Soviet experiment emerges from the past as an allegory for the new organizational challenges of our time. From deep within the Californian military-entertainment complex, Wark retrieves Donna Haraway's cyborg critique and science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson's Martian utopia as powerful resources for rethinking and remaking the world that climate change has wrought. Molecular Red proposes an alternative realism, where hope is found in what remains and endures.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Hitler’s Beneficiaries GÖTZ ALY

A stunning account of the economic workings of the Third Reich-and the reasons ordinary Germans supported the Nazi state

Description In this groundbreaking book, historian Gotz Aly addresses one of modern history's greatest conundrums: How did Hitler win the allegiance of ordinary Germans? The answer is as shocking as it is persuasive. By engaging in a campaign of theft on an almost unimaginable scale- and by channeling the proceeds into generous social programs-Hitler literally 'bought' his people's consent. Drawing on secret files and financial records, Aly shows that while Jews and people of occupied lands suffered crippling taxation, mass looting, enslavement, and destruction, most Germans enjoyed a much- improved standard of living. Buoyed by the millions of packages soldiers sent from the front, Germans also benefited from the systematic plunder of conquered territory and the transfer of Jewish possessions into their homes and pockets. Any qualms were swept away by waves of governmenthandouts, tax breaks, and preferential legislation. Gripping and significant, Hitler's Beneficiaries makes a radically new contribution to our understanding of Nazi aggression, the Holocaust, and the complicity of a people.

About the Author Respected historian of the Third Reich and the Holocaust, GOTZ ALY'S books include Architects of Annihilation. Winner of Germany's prestigious Heinrich Mann prize, Aly currently teaches at the University of Frankfurt.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 The Communist Manifesto / The April Theses , , V.I. Lenin introduced by

A new beautiful edition of the Communist Manifesto, combined with Lenin's key revolutionary tract

Description The Communist Manifesto is the most influential political book ever written - few other books can claim to have fundamentally changed the world, but after the Russian Revolution this book has become the key text for radicals the world over. Now, in the wake of a punishing financial crisis and on the centenary of the Revolution that it helped to spark, the book remains both an essential guide to the transformations wrought by capitalism - and offers the solution to its inequality and exploitation.

There have been many editions of this book before, but this is a beautifully presented hardback edition and with one key addition - as this book was established by the Russian Revolution it has been coupled with Lenin's April Theses as an attractive 'flip' book (i.e. turn the book upside down and you have another). These ten directives were presented by Lenin after he returned from exile in 1917, and are the key program for the revolution that was carried out that year.

It has a new introduction by acclaimed author Taqiq Ali, showing how the Russian Revolution changed the world and the horizon of political change, and why its ambition is still relevant today.

About the Author KARL MARX was born in 1818. Expelled from Prussia in the same year, Marx took up residence first in Paris and then in London where, in 1867 he published his magnum opus Capital. A co-founder of the International Workingmen's Association in 1864, Marx died in London in 1883.

FRIEDRICH ENGELS was born in 1820. He moved to England in 1842 to work in his father's Manchester textile firm. The story of six radical pioneers at the turn of the 20th century

Description Rebel Crossing opens up a forgotten chapter in the history of radicalism, shedding new light on lives committed to change and hope for a better future. This is an extraordinary work of archival history of great ambition: Rowbotham uncovered six lives that have been overlooked by history and reconstructs their lives, dreams, loves and struggles.

The lives of these six radical pioneers span the end of the 19th century and travels across continents: from the slums of Bristol to the wildernesses of California. This collective biography is a jigsaw of ideas, passions, transatlantic voyages, loves and radical hopes. It is a story that travels from across nations and oceans, interweaving lives dedicated to seeking new hope in revolutionary ideas. All six sought to combine their quest for the personal development of individuals with the creation of a society based on co-operative association, rather than competition and profit, and establishing new ways of living: , secularism, , anarchism, free love, health foods, and rational dress. In turn, the uncovering of these partially hidden lives reveals insights in this age of radical ideas and action, offering new understanding of key figures such as Edward Carpenter; Kropotkin, Patrick Geddes, Eleanor Marx, and the young Bernard Shaw.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Revolution in Our Lifetime Donna Murch

A new history of the Black Panther Party, for the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Description The Black Panther Party and the movement that spawned it is one of the most storied episodes in the history of the Black freedom struggle in America, and in the history of the American Left. And yet, argues the brilliant historian Donna Murch, the Panthers' radical moment and meaning have become obscured - first, by government repression, and then by the narrowing of demands and alternative politics in the fifty years since the founding of the party in Oakland in October, 1966. Revolution in Our Lifetime restores the anti-capitalism and internationalist perspective - the revolutionary imagination and farreaching politics - of the Panthers to our understanding of this crucial and fascinating movement.

Written as a succinct and accessible essay, this new history of the Panthers provides the sharpest picture of the Panthers while reflecting on their legacy and relevance today, in a renewed era of Black and youth protest.

About the Author DONNA MURCH is an associate professor of history at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is the author of Living for the City: Migration, Education, and the Rise of the Black Panther party in Oakland, California, which won the Phillis Wheatley Prize. Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Beyond Black and White: Transforming African-American Politics Manning Marable

Highly acclaimed dissection of the 'new racism', from one of the greatest radical black intellectuals of our time

Description Many in the US, including Barack Obama, have called for a 'post-racial' politics: yet race still divides the country politically, economically and socially.

In this highly acclaimed work, Manning Marable rejects both liberal inclusionist strategies and the separatist politics of the likes of Louis Farrakhan. Beginning by looking back at African-American politics and the fight against racism of the recent past, outlining a trenchant analysis of the 'New Racial Domain' that must be uprooted, he argues powerfully for a 'transformationist' strategy, which retains a distinctive black cultural identity but draws together all the poor and exploited in a united struggle against oppression.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 If They Come in the Morning...: Voices of Resistance Angela Davis

With race and the police once more burning issues, this classic work from one of America's giants of black radicalism has lost none of its prescience or power

Description The trial of Angela Davis is remembered as one of America's most historic political trials, and no one can tell the story better than Davis herself. Opening with a letter from James Baldwin to Angela Davis, and including contributions from numerous radicals and commentators such as Black Panthers George Jackson, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale and Erica Huggins, this book is not only an account of Davis's incarceration and the struggles surrounding it, but also perhaps the most comprehensive and thorough analysis of the prison system of the United States and the figure embodied in Davis's arrest and imprisonment-the political prisoner.

Since the book was written, the carceral system in the US has grown from strength to strength, with more of its black population behind bars than ever before. Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Four Futures: Life After Capitalism Peter Frase

Bold exploration of our future utopias and dystopias through a science fiction lens.

Description 'It is easier to imagine the end of the world,' the theorist Fredric Jameson has remarked, 'than to imagine the end of capitalism.' Jacobin editor Peter Frase argues that technological advancements and environmental threats will inevitably push our society beyond capitalism, and Four Futures imagines just how this might look. Extrapolating possible futures from current changes the world is now experience, and drawing upon speculative fictions to illustrate how these futures might look, Four Futures examines , rentism, socialism and exterminism-or in other words, the socialisms we may reach if a resurgent Left is successful, and the barbarisms we may be consigned to if those movements fail.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 Building the Commune: Radical Democracy in Venezuela George Cicciarello-Maher

A journey through Venezuela's experiments in radical democracy, after the age of Chavez

Description Since 2011, a wave of popular mobilizations has swept the globe, from Occupy to the Arab Spring, 15M in Spain and the uprisings in Greece. Their demands were varied, but what they share is a commitment to ideals of radical democracy, and a willingness to experiment with new forms of organization to achieve this. In fact, the countries of Latin America have been experimenting with such projects since 1989-just as left projects of all stripes fell into decline across Europe-in what was a moment of rebirth. Poor residents of Venezuela's barrios took history into their own hands in a mass popular rebellion against neoliberalism, much as the movements appearing worldwide are doing today.

Twenty-five years since the experiments began, Latin America is hardly recognizable, with leftist governments consolidating a new hegemony and radical movements surging forth from below. In Building the Commune, George Cicciarello-Maher travels through the many radical experiments of Venezuela, assessing how they have succeeded and failed, and how they are continuing to operate. Speaking to community members, workers, students and government officials, Cicciarello-Maher provides a balance sheet of these projects, that movements throughout the world can look to for lessons and inspiration.

About the Author GEORGE CICCARIELLO-MAHER is assistant professor of political science at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He is the author of We Created Chavez: A People's History of the Venezuelan Revolution, and a forthcoming volume called Decolonizing Dialectics.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 The Essence of Nihilism Emanuele Severino

A groundbreaking classic of contemporary philosophy for the first time in English translation

Description In 1969, Emanuele Severino underwent a Vatican trial for the 'fundamental incompatibility' between his thought and the Christian doctrine, and was removed from his position as professor of philosophy at the Catholic University in Milan. Essenza del Nichilismo, published in 1972, was the first book to follow his expulsion, and to firmly establish Severino's preeminent position within the constellation of contemporary philosophy.

In this groundbreaking book, Severino reinterprets the history of Western philosophy as the unfolding of 'the greatest folly', that is, of the belief that 'things come out of nothing and fall back into nothing'. According to Severino, such a typically Western understanding of reality has produced a belief in the radical 'nothingness' of things. This, in turn has justified the treatment of the world as an object of exploitation, degradation and destruction.

To move beyond Western nihilism, suggests Severino, we must first of all 'return to Parmenides'. Joining forces with the most venerable of Greek philosophers, Severino confutes the 'path of night' of nihilism, and develops a new philosophy grounded on the principle of the eternity of reality and of every single existent.

About the Author EMANUELE SEVERINO is professor hemeritus at Venezia's Ca' Foscari University and professor of Fundamental Ontology at Milan's San Raffaele University. He is now widely considered the most important living Italian philosopher.

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 Fire Alarm: Reading Walter Benjamin's "On the Concept of History" Michael Lowy

This illuminating study of Benjamin's final essay helps unlock the mystery of this great philosopher

Description Revolutionary critic of the philosophy of progress, nostalgic of the past yet dreaming of the future, romantic partisan of materialism - Walter Benjamin is in every sense of the word an 'unclassifiable' philosopher. His essay 'On the Concept of History' was written in a state of urgency, as he attempted to escape the Gestapo in 1940, before finally committing suicide.

In this scrupulous, clear and fascinating examination of this essay, Michael Lowy argues that it remains one of the most important philosophical and political writings of the twentieth century. Looking in detail at Benjamin's celebrated but often mysterious text, and restoring the philosophical, theological and political context, Lowy highlights the complex relationship between redemption and revolution in Benjamin's philosophy of history.

About the Author MICHAEL LOWY is Research Director of Sociology at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris. His previous books include Redemption and Utopia: Liberation Judaism in Central Europe, in Latin America and The War of the Gods: Religion and Politics in Latin America.

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality: The 1905 Edition Sigmund Freud

The first edition of this classic work from 1905 shows a radically different psychoanalysis

Description The traditional story about the historical origins of Freudian psychoanalysis implies that the Oedipus complex was part of Freudian theory from the very beginning. However, in this first edition of Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, first published in 1905 and never before translated into English, we find no reference whatsoever to the Oedipus complex. Is there a Freudian psychoanalysis that is not Oedipal?

This first version of Freud's Three Essays articulates just such a non-Oedipal psychoanalysis. As such, it still has a definite 'emancipatory' potential; Freudian psychoanalysis is not Oedipal in its very nature. It is only from 1909 onwards that psychoanalysis tends to become a sophisticated defence of what Freud first called the 'popular opinion' about sexuality. It was precisely this 'popular opinion' that psychoanalysis originally was meant to deconstruct. Is there a Freudian escape - that is an escape that remains not so much within Freudian orthodoxy, but at least within its inspiration - from this impasse?

If Freud has respected more systematically his own original thesis, could it be that the Oedipus complex wouldn't be the shibboleth of psychoanalysis? Not only is this first edition less Oedipal than is generally believed, but it also contains the elements for thinking a 'non- Oedipal' psychoanalysis; a Freud against Oedipus.

About the Author SIGMUND FREUD was born in Freiberg, which is now known as the Czech Republic, on May 6, 1856. Freud developed the method of psychoanalysis, and his theories on child sexuality, libido and the ego, among other topics, were some of the most influential academic concepts of the 20th century.

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 Simple Forms: Legend, Saga, Myth, Riddle, Saying, Case, Memorabile, Fairytale, Joke Andre Jolles

A seminal text in literary theory available in English for the first time

Description Legend, saga, myth, riddle, proverb, case, anecdote, fairy tale, joke: Andre Jolles understands each of these nine 'simple forms' as the reflection in language of a distinct mode of human engagement with the world and thus as a basic structuring principle of literary narrative. Long recognized as a classic of genre theory, Simple Forms (1929) has been called a significant precursor to structuralist and narratological approaches to literature. Like Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale, with which it is often compared, Jolles's work is not only foundational for the later development of genre theory but of continuing relevance today. A major influence on literary genre studies since its publication, Simple Forms is now available for the first time in English.

About the Author ANDRE JOLLES (1874-1946) was a scholar of ethnology, folklore and aesthetics, and is considered by many to be a precursor of structuralism.

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 Weightless Sarah Bannan

Prep meets The Virgin Suicides in a haunting coming-of-age story for the digital generation and an examination of the hypocrisy of small town life, where no one quite knows where rumour ends and truth begins

Description Adamsville wasn't a place that people came to. It was a place you were from, where you were born, where you were raised, where you stayed.

Before Carolyn Lessing arrived, nothing much had ever happened in Adamsville, Alabama. Each week, at dinner tables and in the high school assembly, everyone would pray for the football team to win. Each year, the Adams High hotlist would be updated, and girls would rise and fall within its ranks. Each day, everyone lived by the unwritten rules that cheerleaders did not hang out with the swim team, seniors did not date freshmen and the blistering heat was something that should never be remarked upon. But then the new girl came.

All Carolyn's social media could reveal was that she had moved from New Jersey, she had 1075 friends - and she didn't have a relationship status. In beach photos with boys who looked like Abercrombie models she seemed beautiful, but in real life she was so much more. She was perfect.

This was all before the camera crews arrived, before it became impossible to see where rumour ended and truth began, and before the Annual Adamsville Balloon Festival, when someone swore they saw the captain of the football team with his arm around Carolyn, and cracks began to appear in the dry earth.

About the Author Sarah Bannan, was born in 1978 in upstate New York. She moved frequently when she was growing up, living in Texas, in Florida and in Alabama, where she attended high school. Showing the realities of the Second World War through photographs, this is a moving and informative addition to the library of anyone interested in the Second World War.

Description The small, lightweight, 35mm cameras that were available by the time of the Second World War revolutionised war photography. Unencumbered by heavy equipment, including tripods and photographic plates, the photographer could now get much closer to the action and respond instinctively to changing situations, shooting a series of pictures on a single film. Although their smaller format meant that technically the images were usually grainier and less sharp, this tonal harshness gave the pictures a gritty realism and immediacy. And with the easing of censorship, the photographers were able to publish unflinching images of conflict and the catastrophic consequences of war as never before. From a naval point of view, developments in submarine and aircraft carrier technology completely changed how a war would be fought at sea. Navies of the protagonists were expected to provide many support services, from the protection of convoys to the landing of troops on hostile shores, which literally enabled the war to go global.

Conway's The War at Sea in Photographs describes the Second World War through the chronology of naval events. Chapters are organised by year, with a concise introduction followed by pages of photographs, each accompanied by an informative caption. They include the work of photojournalists on assignment and specialist naval photographers attached to a particular unit or ship, who captured the confusion of a sinking vessel or the moment of impact of a kamikaze attack. Often grainy, blurred, damaged, these intense images are balanced by the more organised, framed shots of naval personnel in training, in preparation for battle, and planning operations in shore bases, as well as dockyard workers and harbour facilities. From the scuttling of the Graf Spee and the Channel Dash of the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, to the Operations Room at Western Approaches, and the US Marines wading ashore at Iwo Jima; from the amateur photography of a serviceman on board a destroyer to Robert Capa's images of the mayhem on Omaha Beach, this collection is a moving and informative addition to the library of anyone interested in the Second World War.

Conway Publishing DECEMBER 2016 The Voyages of Captain Cook: 101 Questions and Answers About the Explorer and His Three Great Scientific Expeditions Anthony Cornish

Captain James Cook is probably the most famous explorer of all time, this book is the first to explore Cook's voyages and maritime career from the point of view of the reader with a healthy curiosity.

Description Captain James Cook is probably the most famous explorer of all time, and not without good reason. The three Pacific voyages of discovery he made between 1768 and 1779 set new standards in navigation, surveying and shipboard health; and he discovered and charted numerous lands, resulting in lasting trade and the development of British interests abroad. The interest and influence of the Royal Society in the expeditions meant that a group of scientists and artists accompanied Cook and his crew to record the people and places that they encountered. In turn, the samples they collected and catalogued and the paintings and drawings they made not only advanced the botanical and natural sciences, but left us with a vivid visual reminder of those voyages.

Many books have been written on the subject of Cook's voyages and his maritime career, but this is the first to approach them from the point of view of the reader with a healthy curiosity rather than a scholarly interest. Similarly, for someone who has been been inspired and intrigued by a visit to the Endeavour replica, or to one of the many museums devoted to Captain Cook, this is a concise and readable guide that pulls out the key questions and provides clear, engaging answers, detailing essential information on the many aspects of Cook's voyages. The 101 Questions and Answers structure is an ideal format for dealing with such diverse yet frequently-asked questions as:

How many ships took part in the voyages? What were their names? What is a collier? What were Cook's secret instructions? Did Cook discover Antarctica? Where did Cook learn his surveying techniques? How did they measure longitude? Which voyage did the artist William Hodges accompany Captain Cook on? What is breadfruit?

All these questions and many more are answered simply and engagingly, employing contemporary paintings, charts and other images to illustrate each point. Price: $19.99 (NZ$22.99) ISBN: 9781844860609 About the Author Format: Hard Cover Dimensions: 215x153mm Extent: 112 pages

Conway Publishing DECEMBER 2016 Able Seamen: The lower deck of the Royal Navy 1850 to 1939 Brian Lavery

A fascinating account of the evolution of the seaman through 89 years of change.

Description Brian Lavery returns with the second volume of his engaging social history of the Royal Navy's 'lower deck', exploring the world of the seamen (as opposed to the officers of the quarterdeck). Following on from Royal Tars (covering the years 875-1850) it now precedes the third volume All Hands (covering the years from 1939).

In Able Seamen the author addresses a range of issues central to the evolution of the seaman through 89 years of change, including 'Jacky' Fisher's sweeping reforms and the concept of the 'new seaman'; the rise of stokers, artificers and engineers and the traditional seaman's 'crisis of identity' as the navy moved from sail to steam. The 'lower deck' also had to deal with the changing social structure of the Navy; the great demands made on the Service throughout the British Empire; the move from broadside batteries to sophisticated turretsand fire-control systems; the modernization and standardisation of signals and telegraphy; the rise of 'small ships' as a destroyer fleet was created to fulfil new strategic requirements; and the creation of the submarine service. Brian Lavery also highlights the repercussions of the First World War and the grand fleet engagement at Jutland; the expressions of discontent (such as the infamous Invergordon mutiny), and the lead-up to the Second World War.

Readable, engaging and authoritative, this book chronicles an important stage in the history of the Royal Navy and illuminates the inherent adaptability of the lower deck, as new technologies demanded increased professionalism, specialization and training.

About the Author Brian Lavery is one of Britain's leading naval historians and a prolific author. A Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and a renowned expert on the sailing navy and the Royal Navy, in 2007 he won the prestigious Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award. His recent titles include Ship, Royal Tars, Conquest of the Ocean, In Which They Served, Churchill's Navy, and the Sunday Times bestseller Empire of the Seas.

Conway Publishing DECEMBER 2016 Himalaya: The exploration and conquest of the greatest mountains on earth Phillip Parker, Peter Hillary and Philip Parker

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first successful summiting of Mount Everest, Himalaya brings together an esteemed selection of award-winning writers and respected climbers, including Stewart Weaver, Stephen Venables, Mick Conefrey, Peter Gillman and Doug Scott, to produce a compelling, accessible and comprehensive survey of the Himalaya in all its aspects.

Description At some 1500 miles long and 250 miles at its widest, the Himalaya range is home to the fourteen greatest mountain peaks on the planet each of which towers over 8,000 metres. Celebrated by the region's early ancient kingdoms, many of these peaks remain sacred in both the Hindu and Buddhist religions and have additionally inspired western explorers and adventurers for some 300 years.

Himalaya examines the geographical origins of the region, its earliest peoples and the onward western discovery and exploration commencing with the Jesuits, progressing through myriad nineteenth century gentlemen surveyors, culminating in Edmund Hilary and Tensing Norgay's ascent of Everest in 1953 and continuing to the present day with extreme mountaineers and adventure tourists. However the book does not solely deal with the attempts to summit the majestic Everest. Its broader brief, and chronological structure, allows the inclusion of narrative and journal extracts from the equally heroic pioneering ascents of Himalayan peaks including K2 (1954), Nanga Parbat (1953), Annapurna (1950), Kangchenjunga (1955), and Lhotse (1956) as well as subsequent new frontiers, peaks, routes and mountaineering techniques.

The volume includes specially commissioned pieces where legendary climbers reflect on their intrepid experiences and heroism on the highest mountains on earth. These accounts are set beside stunning commissioned cartography, historical photographs, newly shot stills of ephemera and artifacts as well as the most recent Himalayan work from some of the world's leading adventure photographers.

Conway Publishing DECEMBER 2016 Jutland 1916: The Archaeology of a Naval Battlefield Innes McCartney

Marine archaeologist Dr Innes McCartney solves the mysterious fate of the lost ships of Jutland and reveals - for the first time - the location and state of the wrecks of all 25 warships sunk in the battle

Description The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in the First World War. For years the myriad factors contributing to the loss of many of the ships remained a mystery, subject only to speculation and theory.

In this book, marine archaeologist and historian Dr Innes McCartney reveals for the first time what became of the warships that vanished on the night of 31st May 1916, examining the circumstances behind the loss of each ship and reconciling what was known in 1916 to what the archaeology is revealing today. The knowledge of what was present was transformed in 2015 by a groundbreaking survey using the modern technology of multi-beam. This greatly assisted in unravelling the details behind several Jutland enigmas, not least the devastating explosions which claimed five major British warships, the details of the wrecks of the 13 destroyers lost in the battle and the German warships scuttled during the night phase.

This is the first book to identify the locations of many of the wrecks, and - scandalously - how more than half of these sites have been illegally plundered for salvage, despite their status as war graves. An essential and revelatory read for anyone interested in naval history and marine archaeology.

About the Author Dr Innes McCartney is a nautical archaeologist, explorer, historian and author. Over the last 25 years he has specialised in the discovery of and investigation into twentieth century shipwrecks including the wrecks of the Battle of Jutland and many British and German submarines. He has appeared regularly on documentaries such as Time Team Special and is a popular speaker at conferences.

A set of Napoleonic wargames rules for small and large skirmishes.

Description Chosen Men is a set of fast-action skirmish rules detailing the bloody skirmishes between light troops in the Napoleonic Wars. The primary focus of the game is on soldiers and NCOs in light 'flank' companies, as they scout ahead of larger forces and take part in man-to-man actions against enemy skirmishers.

Although the game allows for the formation of accurately sized companies of light infantry and cavalry if you wish, these formations are broken down into small groups of up to a dozen men. For the most part, officers are not swashbuckling super-heroes, but staunch commanders who rally and direct their men to achieve the battlefield objectives. Although the game uses an alternating action turn sequence, officers can use their influence on multiple units at the same time in an effort to steal the initiative. With all rolls resolved using standard 6-sided dice, this game combines a classic wargaming feel with modern wargame mechanics.

About the Author Mark Latham is a writer, editor and games designer from Staffordshire, UK. After graduating with an MA in English literature from the University of Sheffield, Mark went on to become the editor of White Dwarf magazine, and then the managing editor of Games Workshop's games development team, before finally becoming a full-time author of novels, short stories and games. A keen amateur historian, Mark is fascinated by the nineteenth century, leading to the production of the popular tabletop games Legends of the Old West, Trafalgar and Waterloo for Warhammer Historical.

Mark Stacey was born in Manchester in 1964 and has been a freelance illustrator since 1987. He has a lifelong interest in all periods of history, particularly military history, and has specialized in this area throughout his career. He now lives and works in Cornwall.

Osprey's trilogy on Operation Market-Garden continues with a fascinating account of the British airborne assault on the bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Ken Ford's detailed analysis of the doomed operation is ideal for those interested in World War II and the operational history of the British military.

Description With Germany being pushed back across Europe the Allied forces looked to press their advantage with Operation Market- Garden, a massive airborne assault that, if successful, could have shortened the war in the west considerably. The ground advance consisted of an armoured thrust by the British XXX Corps, while the US 82nd and 101st US Airborne Divisions secured the bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegen and the British 1st Airborne Division and Polish 1st Airborne Brigade were tasked with seizing the final bridge at Arnhem to secure the route. What they did not realise was that the 9. SS and 10. SS-Panzer Divisions were nearby, ready to reinforce the local garrison and fend off the Allied assault.

Focusing on the role played by these British and Polish troops, Ken Ford examines Operation Market-Garden in its entirety, from the early planning through to the early setbacks and eventual catastrophic conclusion.

With detailed profiles of the commanders and accounts of the battles, this highly illustrated title is a must for those interested in the colonial and revolutionary history of the US.

Description The battle of the Thames was the culmination of a bloody campaign that saw American forces clash with the British and their Native American allies on multiple occasions. In a battle that included the future US president William Henry Harrison, American naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry and the legendary Shawnee leader Tecumseh the Americans prevailed, due in part to their imaginative use of Kentucky mounted riflemen to charge British regular infantry and artillery. Their victory allowed them to secure the North-West frontier, a crucial strategic gain in the War of 1812. Drawing on his expertise of US-Native American conflicts, historian John F. Winkler investigates the battle of the Thames, bringing the conflict to life through detailed analysis, combat reports and stunning specially commissioned illustrations.

One of Hitler's 'vengeance weapons', the Volksj.ger (People's Fighter) was a single-engine, jet powered interceptor that could be easily and cheaply manufactured for one final fight against the Allies. Aimed at aviation enthusiasts and historians of World War 2, this volume explores the operational history of the revolutionary He 162.

Description With the Third Reich on the brink of defeat Hitler's instructions to his designers were clear. He wanted a Volksj.ger - a People's Fighter that was quick to produce and used minimal quantities of strategic materials. Heinkel rose to the challenge with the He 162, a fighter constructed of wood and metal that was designed, built and flown in the staggeringly short time of ten weeks. Professional pilots were in short supply, and so the Luftwaffe was ordered to man the He 162 with hastily trained members of the Hitler Youth - a flawed plan that fortunately never came to fruition. Detailed aircraft profiles and never before seen photographs perfectly complement the analysis of the revolutionary Heinkel He 162 as author Robert Forsyth traces its entire history, from the early design and production through to its limited combat experience.

About the Author Robert Forsyth has studied the history and operations of the Luftwaffe for many years. He is the author of Messerschmitt Me 264 Amerikabomber (2006 - with Eddie J Creek), and He 162 Volksj.ger (2008 - with Eddie J Creek); for Osprey Publishing, Jagdverband 44 and Jagdgeschwader 7 (Aviation Elite Units), Fw 190 vs B-17 (Duel), Aces of the Legion Condor and Luftwaffe Viermot Aces (Aircraft of the Aces) and Me 262 Bomber and Reconnaissance Units (Combat Aircraft). He has been drawing since he could hold a pencil and throughout his life he has worked in many mediums creating artwork on a variety of subjects. He has worked on the Osprey Aviation list since 2000, and in that time he has produced some of the finest artwork seen in these volumes. Description As Europe descended into war the newly formed state of Croatia found itself an ally in Nazi Germany. Tens of thousands of Croatians volunteered for the German Wehrmacht, with Croatian-badged units created within the Army, Navy, Luftwaffe, Waffen-SS and Police force. When Hitler turned his attention to Stalin's Soviet Union many of these men found themselves thrown into the fray, with Croatian soldiers serving at Stalingrad, fighting Tito's Partisans in the Balkans and battling against the advancing Red Army in Hungary. Aided by detailed illustrations, author Vladimir Brnardic explores the uniforms and equipment of World War II Croatian Legionaries.

Featuring full colour artwork, this volume is an invaluable resource for modellers and wargamers of 19th century campaigns, as well as students of this famous international corps.

Description Concluding his bestselling series on the French Foreign Legion, Martin Windrow explores the formation and development of the Legion during its 'first generation'. Raised in 1831, the Legion's formative years would see it fight continuous and savage campaigns in Algeria, aid the Spanish government in the Carlist War, join the British in the Crimean campaign and fight alongside the Swiss in the bloody battles of Magenta and Solferino. With the ever-changing combat environments they found themselves in, the Legion had to constantly adapt in order to survive. Taking advantage of the latest research, this lavishly illustrated study explores the evolution of the uniforms and kit of the French Foreign Legion, from their early campaigns in Algeria through to their iconic Battle of Camerone in Mexico and their role in the Franco-Prussian war.

About the Author Martin Windrow is series editor at Osprey and an authority on the post-war French army, particularly the Foreign Legion. He is the author of the very successful Men-at-Arms 300: French Foreign Legion since 1945, and Men-at-Arms 322: The French War Indochina War 1946-54, and the critically acclaimed The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam (2004).

Osprey DECEMBER 2016 M50 Ontos and M56 Scorpion 1956-70: US Tank Destroyers of the Vietnam War Kenneth W Estes, illustrated by Henry Morshead illustrated by Johnny Shumate

Designed as fast, light tank destroyers for the Cold War battlefield, the agile, heavily armed M50 Ontos and M56 Scorpion instead found their raison d'.tre in the jungles of Vietnam. This book offers a technical and combat history of these intriguing vehicles that will appeal to historians of the Vietnam War and US tank enthusiasts.

Description Designed in the 1950s, the US Marines' M50 Ontos and the US Army's M56 Scorpion were both intended to be fast, light, air-droppable tank-killers for the Cold War battlefield - an answer to the cumbersome and ineffective World War II-vintage tanks that had taken to the battlefield during the Korean War. Although they shared the aim of bringing light, mobile and lethal antitank firepower to the infantry the two vehicles varied wildly in design to cater for their unique mission demands. They first saw service in the Lebanon intervention of 1958 but it was in the Vietnam War that they made their name, with the M50 Ontos seeing intense combat action in the Battle of Hue in 1968. Detailed illustrations and expert analysis provide the reader with a comprehensive history of these deadly antitank vehicles, from early development through to their combat history and the eventual disbandment of the Marine Corps' last antitank battalion with M50A1s in 1971.

The SR-71 Blackbird is an iconic aircraft that has come to symbolize America's technological superiority during the Cold War. Using previously unpublished information, globally renowned expert Paul Crickmore builds upon his definitive account of the SR-71 Blackbird, creating a volume that will appeal to military and aviation enthusiasts around the world.

Description In 1986 Paul Crickmore's first groundbreaking book about the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was published. At that time, the Cold War was at its height and the SR-71 was an integral element in securing crucial intelligence from all parts of the globe. The highly sensitive nature of its missions couldn't be compromised, and it wasn't until the end of the Cold War that the operational exploits of this incredible aeronautical masterpiece could be openly written about. As time passed has more and more information has come to light, with a vast number of official documents declassified and key military figures able to talk openly about the Blackbird programme. Paul Crickmore has used these updated facts to revise his previous history of one of the world's most iconic aircraft of all time, creating what will surely be considered the definitive, timeless volume about the SR-71 Blackbird.

About the Author During his time as an air traffic controller at the London Air Traffic Control Centre, Paul Crickmore gained a unique introduction into SR-71 operations from RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk. Teaming up with Osprey produced the first detailed book ever to be published on the subject. When additional information became available to him in 1990 following the initial shut down of SR-71 operations, Crickmore produced an even more detailed book, Lockheed SR-71 The Secret Missions Exposed - the standard reference work on the subject. The work was acclaimed both by the aviation press, Ben Rich (late president of the Skunk Works) and the crews that flew the SR-71. He is also the author of the first detailed book about the '117, written in partnership with his wife Alison; published by Motorbooks International in 1999.

During World War II the revolutionary bazooka allowed US infantry to destroy enemy armour at close range, while the Germans developed new hardware and tactics to counter this threat to their tanks. Focusing on the savage winter fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, this book will appeal to tank enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in World War II.

Description World War II saw tanks assume a dominant role in warfare, capable of tearing through the enemy lines if left unchecked. To combat the threat posed by these armoured behemoths the United States developed the M1 Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher, better known as the Bazooka. First employed in combat during 1942, the weapon required a great deal of skill and courage to use effectively. By late 1944 it was a mainstay of the US infantry's anti-tank capabilities, alongside towed weapons, anti-tank grenades and other longer-established measures.

Focusing on the savage close-quarters fighting between Germany's armoured divisions and the US infantry during the Battle of the Bulge, Steven Zaloga's absorbing study compares and assesses the strengths and limitations of the cutting- edge technology used by both sides. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and explosive battle reports, this volume casts new light on the evolving nature of infantry-versus-tank combat in the closing months of World War II.

A secret war is fought daily between those who would harness this strange power for themselves, and those who fear it signals the very end of the empire. Across the sea, roused from eternal slumber by a world awash with war, by omens and pagan slaughter, a Great Old One waits for the way to be opened. A cosmic terror that man was not meant to know. An engaging new history and fresh perspective of the German Army in World War I written by a pre-eminent military historian.

Description Drawing on more than a half-century of research and teaching, Dennis Showalter presents a fresh perspective on the German Army during World War I. Showalter surveys an army at the heart of a national identity, driven by - yet also defeated by - warfare in the modern age, which struggled to capitalise on its victories and ultimately forgot the lessons of its defeat. Exploring the internal dynamics of the German army and detailing how the soldiers coped with the many new forms of warfare, Showalter shows how the army's institutions responded to and how Germany itself was changed by war. Detailing the major campaigns on the Western and Eastern fronts and the forgotten war fought in the Middle East and Africa, this comprehensive new volume reveals operational strategy, the complexities of campaigns of movement versus static trench warfare, and the changes in warfare.

Yearbooks DECEMBER 2016 Blood Ransom: Stories from the Front Line in the War against Somali Piracy John Boyle

The first book to look at the issue of modern-day piracy from every angle, and to hear the voices from every side of the war - from pirate to president, from hostage to those fighting the battle.

Description For the first time in history, the navies of the world have united against a common enemy - a couple of thousand rag-tag, underfed men and boys in the western Indian Ocean. Crammed into open boats and armed with ancient AK-47s, they range up to a thousand miles from home shores in Somalia. No one knows how many die at sea. But occasionally they hit the jackpot, seizing vessels and crews to be ransomed for millions of dollars. This is a war that has estimated to have cost the global economy as much as $18 billion in a single year.

Lawyer turned award-winning filmmaker John Boyle takes us with him in this investigation into modern-day piracy. We meet all those involved - from pirates to presidents, naval commanders to negotiators, and heroes to hostages. He addresses why these young men are choosing to risk their lives and freedom; the reality of life as a pirate; the defence tactics used by the international navies and shipping vessels; and what happens next.

About the Author After studying PPE at Oxford John Boyle ran his own criminal law firm for 15 years before selling up to focus on documentary film-making. Walker Books DECEMBER 2016 Bring Back the King: The New Science of De-extinction Helen Pilcher

A unique blend of the science of de-extinction, cloning and comedy

Description If you could bring back just one animal from the past, what would you choose? It can be anyone or anything from history, from the King of the Dinosaurs, T. rex, to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley, and beyond.

De-extinction - the ability to bring extinct species back to life - is fast becoming reality. Around the globe, scientists are trying to de-extinct all manner of animals, including the woolly mammoth, the passenger pigeon and a bizarre species of flatulent frog. But de-extinction is more than just bringing back the dead. It's a science that can be used to save species, shape evolution and sculpt the future of life on our planet.

In Bring Back the King, scientist and comedy writer Helen Pilcher goes on a quest to identify the perfect de-extinction candidate. Along the way, she asks if Elvis could be recreated from the DNA inside a pickled wart, investigates whether it's possible to raise a pet dodo, and considers the odds of a 21st century Neanderthal turning heads on public transport.

Pondering the practicalities and the point of de-extinction, Bring Back the King is a witty and wry exploration of what is bound to become one of the hottest topics in conservation - if not in science as a whole - in the years to come. READ THIS BOOK - the King commands it.

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 The Essence of Nihilism Emanuele Severino

Verso Academic DECEMBER 2016 The Age of Jihad Patrick Cockburn

PATRICK COCKBURN is Middle East correspondent for the Independent and has worked previously for the Financial Times. Winner of the Foreign Affairs Journalist of the Year Award 2014.

Verso Trade DECEMBER 2016 The Blind Astronomer's Daughter John Pipkin

As Caroline reluctantly resumes her father's work and confronts her own longings, Ireland is swept into rebellion, and Caroline and Finnegan are plunged into its violence.

It won the Massachusetts Book Award for Fiction, the Steven Turner Award for Best Work of First Fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters, and the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Pipkin lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and son.

Bloomsbury USA DECEMBER 2016 We Chose to Speak of War and Strife: The World of the Foreign Correspondent John Simpson

He has twice been the Royal Television Society's Journalist of the Year, and has won three BAFTAs, the News and Current Affairs award in 2000 for his coverage, with the BBC News team, of the Kosovo conflict, and, in 2001, an Emmy for his report on the fall of Price: $45.00 (NZ$49.99) Kabul. He has written four bestselling volumes of autobiography: Strange Places, Questionable People; A Mad World, My ISBN: 9781408872222 Masters; News from No Man's Land and, more recently, Not Quite World's End. He lives in Oxford. Format: Hard Cover Dimensions: 234x153mm Extent: 384 pages

Bloomsbury DECEMBER 2016 The Man Who Knew: The Life and Times of Alan Greenspan Sebastian Mallaby

Bloomsbury DECEMBER 2016 The End of the Road: The Festina Affair and the Tour that Almost Wrecked Cycling Alasdair Fotheringham

He explores its long-term consequences - and what, if any, lessons were learned.

About the Author Alasdair Fotheringham is a freelance journalist, and was the cycling correspondent for the Independent and the Independent on Sunday from 2001 to 2016. He has covered 24 Tours de France and 20 Tours of Spain, the Olympics in 2008 and 2012 and numerous other major bike races. He is also a regular contributor to Cyclingnews and ProCycling. His Price: $38.99 (NZ$42.99) previous books are The Eagle of Toledo, a biography of Spain's first Tour de France winner Federico Mart.n Bahamontes, ISBN: 9781472913029 and Reckless: The Life and Times of Luis Oca.a.
