In Attendance: Mr. Thomas Kelly, Communications and Marketing

SECTION A: MINUTES AND RELATED ISSUES

Dr Jane Carrigan was welcomed to the Committee in her new role in RIS supporting the faculty development and preparation of grant applications. Dr. Carrigan will be based in the faculty.

Invited Speaker: Thomas Kelly, Communications & Marketing on Research PR Mr. Thomas Kelly, Communications and Marketing attended to discuss promoting the research in the faculty. Across the University it has been identified that awareness of academic colleagues research outside schools and faculties is an issue and the Communications team would like to address this issue. The Communications team encouraged staff to get in touch to discuss upcoming events, publications and early stage research so that plans can be made to publicise the information and gain as much traction across relevant platforms as possible. Building a relationship with Comms & Marketing is critical to know and evaluate your research PR, identifying where you would like to see your research, the ideal scenario, assist with radio/TV engagement and thus raise the profile of the school, faculty and ultimately University.

Monthly research meetings are scheduled to get everyone in a room once a month to discuss early stage research to assist with developing a plan, identify the audience, whether it’s internal interest, regional, national, specialist press all of which requires time to assess. Questions you need to think about are; what are its practical implications? Theoretical research gets short thrift so the public need to know consequences to get press interest. Page | 1

FRC 17-18 M4 Item A.3 Minutes of Previous Meeting

The Committee were interested to know the protocol in Communications and Marketing regarding prioritising news stories. This will depend on what other things are on at that point in time. Mostly the Communications team (of 3) get papers to read and make judgement call regarding what to do with the information. This was highlighted as something that would assist academic colleagues as it takes substantial time and effort preparing information.

Radio or TV training was suggested by the committee. However, due preparation is required to enable informed discussions on radio or TV so this may not be feasible for all disciplines, e.g. Law and ongoing case.

The marketing platforms were also discussed as different audiences on differing platforms and a one size fits all policy may not be what is required.

RIS also manage a twitter account and are eager to promote research information. Email [email protected] and the communications team list with items.

1. Apologies The apologies were noted.

2. Adoption of Agenda The agenda was adopted.

3. Approval of minutes of previous meeting [7th November 2018] The minutes of the previous meeting were deemed approved.

SECTION C: POLICY AND STRATEGY

7.1 University 7.1.1 Research Committee A decision has been reached regarding the overheads distribution which went to a specially convened meeting of the VP for Research and Deans. Overheads will be issued directly at faculty level. Faculty Management Board will devise a policy on how this is distributed across the faculty.

7.1.2 Graduate Research Studies Board (GRSB) Research Convenors to liaise with school colleagues regarding the role of Independent Panel Member (IPM). IPMs to liaise with their research students reminding them of their existence should a meeting be required to discuss any issues. ACTION: Research Convenors

7.2 Faculty Implementation of strategic plan discussed at Faculty Management Board this morning. Related FRC items include a review of schemes in Q1 or Q2 to gauge if objectives being achieved and identify if any additional supports are required.

Faculty guide to be created to assist colleagues with maximizing citations of their journal articles, promoting publications in the appropriate forum, perhaps involving social media. Framework to be devised.

As success in external funding is another measure of research activity, further post award support would be optimal to ensure people get the most value out of the awards.

7.2.1 Schemes* Spring conference scheme and workshop scheme calls will accept applications from the 4th February with a deadline of 22 February. Convenors were asked to note the dates for reviewing the conference scheme applications between 27th February and the 6th March with a review meeting on the 8th March. The workshop scheme will reviewed by the Dean, ADR RIS representative and a DCU colleague outside the faculty.

7.2.2 Thematic Research Groups Visibility of the ongoing research work from colleagues involved in thematic research groups was discussed. Chair invited colleagues to make contact if groups want to have visibility about research cluster and possibly form a subgroup.

INTERACT is about to publish a report called “The International Humanitarian Sector and Language Translation in Crisis Scenarios”, which is based on 20 or so interviews with organisations such as UN OCHA, International Red Cross, Oxfam etc.

Dr Patrick Cadwell was seconded in December 2018 to Translators without Borders, a non-profit organisation supporting multilingual language needs in the humanitarian sector. He spent a number of weeks in their offices in Nairobi, Kenya working on the evaluation of machine translation from French to Swahili. The secondment is part of the EU H2020-funded INTERACT (The International Network on Crisis Translation) project led by CTTS member Dr Sharon O'Brien. Further detail on the latest activities of INTERACT here: https://sites.google.com/view/crisistranslation/home?authuser=0

In November 2018 Dr Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez published her latest article on pedagogical translation (Translation in Language Teaching, Pedagogical Translation, and Code-Switching: Restructuring the Boundaries) in The Language Learning Journal (LLJ) where she analyses terminological incongruities of translation in the language classroom and explores the impact of existing conceptualisations.

In November 2018, following a successful international symposium on Translation, Conflict and Memory hosted in DCU in 2017, the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa in Lisbon organised the III Symposium on Literary Translation and Contemporary Iberia. Translation, Power and Politics where Dr Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez launched a co-edited volume with her colleague Dr Alicia Castillo Villanueva titled New Approaches to Translation, Conflict and Memory. Narratives of the Spanish Civil War and the Dictatorship (Palgrave MacMillan). This volume addresses foundational and complex issues on the role of translation in the transmission of the memory of the Spanish conflict providing the groundwork for future research at the crossroad of translation, conflict and memory studies. As well as launching their volume, both colleagues presented their latest research on "Gender, Power and Memory in the Translation of La Voz Dormida (2002) by Dulce Chacón" in a Translation, Gender and Power panel shared with Prof. Pilar Godayol and Dr Montserrat Bacardí.

CTTS post-doctoral researcher Dr Ana Guerberof recently chaired two sessions at the Translating Europe Forum in Brussels, 8-9 November.

Dr Úna Bhreathnach, Dr Gearóid Ó Cleircín and Dr Patrick Cadwell attended and presented posters at the European Association for Terminology Summit in San Sebastian on 22-23 November. It was announced that the next EAFT Summit, in 2020, will be hosted by Fiontar and Scoil na Gaeilge and SALIS in DCU.

Caitríona Osborne (CTTS PhD student) spoke at the National Gallery of Ireland in November as part of the Curious Connections Postgraduate Study Day. Here, she discussed how art, in all its forms, can provide insight to various experiences and emotions of an artist, while at the same time enables numerous interpretations to be drawn from observers. She explored the connection between Dutch artist Frans Post and Chinese poet Li Bai in terms of similarities in: the themes of their artistic outputs; their personal experiences and; the way in which their works are interpreted and translated. IRAAL Conference in DCU Fourth-year CTTS PhD Candidate Caitríona Osborne presented two co- authored papers at the recent Irish Association for Applied Linguistics (IRAAL) Conference held in DCU on 24 November. First, she spoke about a co-authored paper with her supervisor Dr Qi Zhang entitled A Translanguaging Perspective of Medium of Instruction in the CFL classroom, whereby findings from interviews conducted with Chinese as a foreign language teachers on a recent research trip to China were presented. Secondly, she spoke about a co-authored paper with Dr Qi Zhang and Dr Aileen Pearson-Evans on a collaboration with DCU’s LanguaCulture Space and the beginner’s Chinese language module (ZH107) that was conducted through weekly peer-teaching activities to: (1) increase hours learning CFL outside the formal classroom; (2) strengthen familiarity with Chinese language and culture; (3) increase student motivation when learning CFL.

In addition to helping organise the IRAAL Annual Conference (24 November) and chairing a panel session, CTTS PhD student Èrika Marcet also presented the aims of her doctoral project under the title, “Enhancing Pragmatic Competence: An Empirical Study in Ireland.” She particularly focused on the status quo of Japanese teaching and learning within the Irish context. She made the case on how pragmatic competence can serve as a tool to enhance oral interaction with Japanese native speakers. Èrika also presented some of the linguistic and non-linguistic pragmatic challenges that have emerged Page | 16
