  • Strauss' Capriccio
Richard Strauss’ Capriccio - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore Strauss’ swansong opera Capriccio is not especially well represented in the catalogue; of the 22 complete recordings listed in the CLOR catalogue, only around a dozen have ever been available on CD and the rest were on video. Of those CD issues, several are no longer available and only three are studio recordings; two are radio broadcasts and the remainder are live or live composite stage performances. I consider here ten recordings, including all three of those studio accounts. The libretto was based on an original concept by Stefan Zweig, who had fled to the USA after the rise of the Nazis and committed suicide earlier in the year of the opera’s premiere, 1942. It was further developed by his successor as Strauss’ librettist, Josef Gregor, then Strauss himself took it over before passing it to his conductor friend Clemens Krauss – incidentally, possessor of one of the most blatant comb-overs in history - who completed it with continued input from the composer. The text is witty and more enjoyable if the libretto is to hand or you speak German. Like Strauss’ domestic comedy Intermezzo, Capriccio is wordy and conversational, but its intellectual and philosophical content is certainly higher and couched in some of the most sublime music Strauss ever penned. As a result, it is more popular and frequently performed than other of his late works. It is a vehicle for a supreme singer-actress with a creamy voice and a gift for enlivening text; noted performers who made recordings include Krauss’ second wife, Viorica Ursuleac, Lisa Della Casa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Gundula Janowitz, Kiri Te Kanawa and, more recently, Renée Fleming.

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA ON PIRATE CD COMPILED BY FRANK HAMILTON © 2011 http://FrankHamilton.org [email protected] This chronological discography of radio broadcasts and in-house recordings on compact discs is devoted mainly to non-commercial issues. There are still some mistakes such as roles assigned improperly. There have been MET issues on foreign labels without international distribution that I have not had access to, and I have not included those here. I wish to thank Pierre Guillemette of Candiac, Quebec, for the countless corrections that he made in the early stages of this project, and Bill DePeter of New York for his major contributions. • Wagner's Der Ring Des Nibelungen
Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen - A comparative survey of 18 selected cycles by Ralph Moore I do not know how exactly many Ring cycles are available but I would guess at least thirty, and I offer the following brief evaluation on the understanding that I make no claims to comprehensiveness; this is a personal survey of the eighteen cycles in my own collection. I candidly admit to having discounted several cycles from the 80’s by Haitink (1988-90), Levine (1987-90), Janowski (1980-82), Boulez (1980), as that was decidedly not a Golden Age of Wagner singing, nor have I included the recent, live cycle from Jaap van Zweden on Naxos, as I do not share the enthusiasm some MusicWeb colleagues have expressed for this set as “truly a Ring for our age”; I fear that to me that does not sound like a compliment. I have heard, even owned and then discarded them all because I honestly do not think that their casts can hold a candle to the artists in earlier recordings. Nor does their superior stereo or digital sound necessarily present any advantage, in that it only reveals even more distinctly the vocal inadequacies of the singers compared with those of the immediate post-World War II generation. When I want to hear that marvellous music, it is to recordings from the mid-50’s and 60’s in particular that I turn, because that was the era which gave us stereo sound but could also still stage a Wagner opera with stellar voices, whereas many previous recordings are superbly performed but sonically compromised by being in live mono.

  • Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier
Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier: A survey of all ten studio recordings and selected live performances by Ralph Moore Der Rosenkavalier is Strauss’ most popular opera by far, regularly performed worldwide and maintaining a secure place in the repertoire since its premiere in 1911. Nonetheless, many of its most dedicated admirers will admit that it has its longueurs and tolerate a few judicious cuts, as long as the lollipops remain intact. Given that there are over a hundred recordings in the catalogue, it is surprising that there have been only ten studio accounts made since the first, abridged recording under Robert Heger in 1933 and the last of those was made as long as nearly thirty years ago by Haitink. Since then, a number of live, digital recordings have been issued, but, just as we are experiencing a dearth of great voices, the age of studio recordings is largely over, so many of my preferred versions are now quite venerable. The three leading female roles are among the most attractive in the repertoire. Although the roles of the Marschallin and Sophie are for dramatic and lyric soprano respectively and technically the part of Octavian is for a mezzo-soprano, many singers have performed both the soprano parts at different stages of their career and some have even sung all three. The other great role is Baron Ochs, written for a basso profondo – or at least a basso cantante with good low notes, and, as is so often the case with Strauss given his disdain for tenors, the Italian Singer is given the merest cameo in a demanding, but mockingly ironic, aria which lasts only a few minutes.
