WALK-OUT Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Leader of the Opposition alongwith all members belonging to PPPP, PTI, MQM, JI, ANP, QWP and some members of FATA staged a walk-out against non-inclusion of the Supreme Court and High Court (Extension of Jurisdiction to Federally Administered Tribal Areas) Bill, 2017 in the Orders of the Day. 2 STATEMENTS MADE BY THE MINISTERS 1. Mr. Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, Minister for National Food Security and Research stated that issue of sugar-cane farmers relates to Provincial Government and suggested to constitute a committee comprising of representatives of Ministry of Commerce and Textile, National Food Security and Research, Ministry of Industries and Production and representative of all Provincial Governments to resolve the crises of farmers of sugar-cane. 2. Mr. Muhammad Pervaiz Malik, Minister for Commerce and Textile informed the House that grievances of sugar-cane farmers relate to the Provincial Governments. The role of Ministry of Commerce is to manage and permit exports of surplus crops, etc on recommendation of the appropriate body on merit. QUORUM Quorum.- At 6.02 p.m. Ms. Shahida Rehmani, MNA belonging to PPPP drew attention of the Chair towards the lack of quorum. Count was made, the House was found in order.   • Pakistan Ahead of the 2018 Elections
    BRIEFING Pakistan ahead of the 2018 elections SUMMARY Pakistan will hold general elections on 25 July 2018. This event deserves attention for several reasons. With around 200 million inhabitants, Pakistan has the sixth-largest population in the world. One of the world's nine nuclear powers, it is the only Muslim country among them. It is strategically located between India, China, Afghanistan and Iran. It plays a major role with regard to Afghanistan's stability and the fight against terrorism, for which it has often been accused of connivance with militant groups. Finally, it is home to the world's second-largest Muslim population. The election is set to secure the second consecutive democratic transition of power in a country marked by chronic dualism between political and military power. The event is particularly important, given the current political turmoil following the removal of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office. Pakistan is accused of giving support to terrorist groups. However, after the Taliban massacred 132 children at an army-run school in 2014, the authorities adopted a number of provisions to curtail terrorism. Nevertheless, the US administration, which considers Pakistan one of its key allies in the Afghanistan war, is unsatisfied with its record of fighting terrorism. The resultant US freeze on military aid to Islamabad may force the latter to switch allegiance to China and Russia, which could jeopardise Washington's efforts in Afghanistan. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) of infrastructure projects is an example of the already flourishing relations with Beijing. An EU election observation mission is monitoring the electoral process.

    PARLIAMENTARIANS TAX DIRECTORY FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2017 (Published on 22nd February 2019) FOREWORD Every country levies taxes to raise revenues which are essential for the running of affairs of a state and provision of public services. Development of a progressive taxation system is an essential tool to reduce social inequalities in a society and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. The countries exhibiting due diligence in collection of taxes from the affluent segments of the society through progressive taxation and expending them judiciously for the welfare of the poor are rated high on transparency and good governance index. Efficient, fair and sustainable tax systems are critical for institution building and promoting democracy and improved economic governance. The need for transparency and accountability in a vibrant democracy imposes extra responsibility on public representatives for disclosure of their assets and the sources of their income. With these aims and objectives, Federal Board of Revenue published, its first Tax Directory of Parliamentarians in tax year 2013. However, this time, in line with the incumbent government’s reform agenda, The Directory embodies the policy of transparency and accountability through access to information. The publication of the Parliamentarians’ Tax Directory is an integral step towards ensuring transparency and informing voters about the tax- paying status of their elected representatives. Tax Directory of the honourable Parliamentarians for the tax year 2017 is now published. The directory contains tax details of members of the Senate of Pakistan and Members of the National as well as Provincial Assemblies. I would like to appreciate the efforts of the Federal Board of Revenue for compiling and publishing this tax directory.

    PARLIAMENTARIANS TAX DIRECTORY FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2014 (Published on 10 April 2015) 1 FOREWORD In continuation of last year’s initiative to publish a Tax Directory of members of Parliament and in exercise of powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section of 216 of Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, I am pleased to present the Tax Directory of honorable parliamentarians for the tax year 2014, prepared by the Federal Board of Revenue. This precedent has set high standards of transparency. The Tax Directory provides tax details of all members of Senate of Pakistan and the National Assembly of Pakistan and the Provincial Assemblies. Chairman, Members, Chief Commissioners and Officers of FBR extended their maximum assistance to the honorable parliamentarians in filing of Income Tax Returns for the tax year 2014. To date out of total 1169 parliamentarians,1040 have filed their Income Tax Returns for the tax year 2014 and for the remaining parliamentarians, due process is being undertaken.
