The building housing the chapel is in danger of collapsing if some- thing isn’t done quickly, said the Rt. Rev. Steven Ayule-Milenge, Bishop Ordinary of the Missionary Diocese of Congo whose office is located in the damaged structure, in an email dated Sept. 4. The chapel had sustained a 2cm crack in the rear wall by the altar and along the chancel pavement in the quake, which registered 5.6 magnitude and occurred at 3:45am local time Aug. 7. According to the Volcanic Research Centre, the epicenter was in Lake Kivu, about 50km north of Bukavu, the largest city in eastern Congo with about 800,000 inhabitants. A retaining wall under construction was not affected by the quake, Bishop Ayule-Milenge said. The wall, which is funded by a ladies’ tea at St. Matthew’s, Newport Beach, , U.S.A. as well as a donation from All Saints’, Saluda, Virginia, U.S.A., is built with stone and reinforced by concrete, he explained. THE BACK PAGE GOIN’ CAMPIN’ A VITAL TOOL IN GROWING THE ACC

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was written by Kian Pritchett, a sophomore at James Madison University and a member and licensed layreader at St. Paul’s, Lexington, Virginia, U.S.A. For ten years, he attended the Diocese of the Mid- Atlantic States Summer Camp as a camper and for the last two years has served as a camp counselor and art teacher. Here are his impressions of this year’s camp, which took place in mid- July outside Richmond, Virginia:

amp Hanover is a beautiful and adventurous place where Christians of all denominations gather to worship the Lord. The Diocese of the CMid-Atlantic States has been represented at this camp for the last 21 years. This year, 21 campers attended daily classes on the Apostles’ Creed, art and music, in preparation for the camp Eucharist at the end of the week. In art class, they made an intricate manuscript of the Apostles’ Creed, which now can be found at the Church of the Ascension in Centreville, Virginia. Music class focused on variations of the Sanctus, Gloria in excelsis, Agnus Dei and the Decalogue. Every day, campers worshiped at Morning and Evening Prayer, where they would cantor the psalms and read the lessons. It is amaz- ing how a mere week at camp can strengthen spirituality, Bishop Lerow (third from left in striped blue shirt) makes an episcopal visitation. rejuvenate relationships with God, and help prepare campers for their next steps in their Christians faith. At camp, great adventures await at every corner. Campers can climb the rock wall, brave the adventure course, fly down the zip-line, play Sharks and Minnows in the pool, and much more. The counselors also offer varied activities such as Bernard Riley’s captivating nature walks, Susan Cady’s arts and crafts, and Trevor Abell’s fishing. In previous years, there has been canoeing on the lake and fencing in the pavilion. In recent years, the number of campers has declined tre- mendously. With so few campers, the program is in danger of dwindling into oblivion. DMAS is the only diocese in the ACC that still offers church camp yearly. Camp, in my opinion, is one of the most important ways by which we can grow the Church. We as a diocese and as a church need to cultivate our children into becoming humble followers of Christ, as well as teach them the reasons why we believe and worship the way we do. Camp is an invaluable asset to our diocese and to the ACC, and I pray that the coming Liz Ward crosses the years prove fruitful in our search for more campers. Camp director Father Michael Weaver leads a class on the Apostles’ Creed. “monkey bridge.”
