PLANNED COURSE OF STUDY Course Title English Literature and Composition - Academic Grade Level Tenth Grade Credits One Content Area / Dept. Woehlcke Course Description: Literature and Composition (Academic), a diverse, thematically structured course, expands upon the writing process and the development of literary analysis skills. Students write a series of analytical and reader response essays and read from a variety of literary genres. Instruction focuses on analyzing literary elements, analyzing author’s purpose, and writing with precision and focus. Additionally, students learn and practice research skills and processes. Grammar usage within the context of students’ reading and writing is an integral component. Students also continue their study of vocabulary through close analysis of literary passages. Though many years of English education can have a bearing on their results, students take the Literature Keystone Exam in grade 10 in addition to their final exams. Course Rationale: The works in the tenth-grade curriculum compel all of us to examine who we are as storytellers. As students progress through the course, they engage in conversations about how we communicate our identities through the observations, insights, and stories we tell. To this end, students closely examine the obvious ways in which we communicate tone through language, movement, and the nature of our conflicts. These conversations yield valuable dialogue and allow multiple openings to evaluate how an author forms a literary identity. Equally important, students have the opportunity to self-reflect on their own identity. Ultimately, students can see how conflict shapes identity and produces insight and growth. -

Chinese astrology is perhaps the oldest known horoscope system in the world. Ancient writings have been dated as far as the written records of China itself, many of which have been well-preserved and can be found in the monasteries in China, and all across South-East Asia. Chinese astrology is based on astronomy and traditional calendars. Using information gathered from the time and date of your birth, a Chinese astrologer is then able to draw up a map of your karma and life and advise you accordingly. When you receive a Chinese Astrology reading you are thus benefiting from a tradition that is thousands of years old. Chinese astrology is the divination of the future from the Chinese calendar, which is based on astronomy, and ancient Chinese philosophy. In ancient China, the astrologers primarily served the emperor and his court and were responsible for the stability, well-being and the health of the population. The roots of the Chinese astrological system are planted deeply in the classical philosophies of Kongzi 孔⼦(Confucius) and Laozi ⽼⼦(Lao Tse). Ancient astrologers could correctly predict when tides, seasons, the proper time to plant and harvest crops, to avoid or make wars. According to Chinese Astrology, a person's destiny can be determined by the position of the major planets, along with the positions of the Sun, Moon and comets and the person's time of birth and Zodiac Sign. -

Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

Her prevailing comment on all the work was that each piece, in its own way, spoke to the much needed quality of HOPE in our world today. The winners are: 1st Place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” 2nd Place - Lynda Jung “No Time Is the Right Time” 3rd Place - Fred Kingwill “The Future—Robin’s Eggs” Honorable Mentions awarded to: Sana Shaw “Awakening of the Star” Richard Scruggs “El Camino Pilgrims” Robin Beckwith “Fragments of Imagined Spring” Liz Hill “Leopard Hat” Each of the first three winners draws the viewer into the center of the painting and beyond! Chris Bunger’s stunning copse of tall trees reaching for the sky and light draws us out of the current darkness of the world to a spiritual point of light and hope and life. Lynda Jung’s 1st place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” reflection on time stretches us to think of time past, present and future, within the clock-like piece she places organic and non-organic elements of life. Fred Kingwill’s small piece uses the circular, womb-like nature of the nest holding the promise of new life to strengthen our hope in the future. Ellen also found it interesting that each of these pieces effectively broke the traditional rule of not centering the focal point on the page. The Misrepresentation of Representation: In Defense of Regional Storytelling in Netflix’s The New Legends of Monkey KATE MCEACHEN The 2018 Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC Me), Television New Zealand (TVNZ), and Netflix’s coproduction of the original series The New Legends of Monkey (2018) is a fantasy-based television series that reimagines Monkey (1978), a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) dubbing of the Japanese television series Saiyūki 西遊記. Saiyūki was an adaptation of the historically significant Chinese novel Xiyou ji (Wu Cheng’en, 1592), known in English as Journey to the West. Monkey gained a cult following in Australia, New Zealand, and other international markets leading to the 2018 reboot The New Legends of Monkey, which, unlike Monkey, was released in the United States (Flanagan). This new iteration prompted cultural confusion from those largely unfamiliar with the preceding series, the contexts in which it was introduced to English-speaking viewers in Australia and New Zealand, or the cult response that resulted. This article presents the recent series with this background in mind and within the context of locally produced television in New Zealand, where The New Legends of Monkey was filmed. Analysis of online discussions exposes the interpretive differences arising from this lack of context regarding the show’s connection to Monkey and highlights the problems viewers face interpreting stories outside of their local production markets—an increasingly relevant problem as more regional productions become accessible to a wide range of audiences through transnational streaming services like Netflix. The 2018 The New Legends of Monkey television adaptation, produced by and for the Australian and New Zealand markets and co-produced for international KATE MCEACHEN is currently pursuing her Doctoral Degree in Cultural Studies at The University of Southern Queensland in Australia. -
