Context

Biographical Note Pseudonym: Joseph Perry; born in London 1873 (?), died in Salisbury, Great Britain 1901; insurance agent, anarchist; became active as a youth in the Socialist League; member of the Commonweal group 1893-1894; joined the Freedom group in 1895; organized with Max Nettlau the anarchist meetings around the International Socialist Congress in London in 1896 and, again with Nettlau, all the activities of the Spanish Atrocities Committee in 1897; intended to go to South Africa in 1899 to fight on the side of the Boers, but failed to obtain a visa, in spite of the intervention by Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis; died in a road accident.

Acquisition These papers were originally part of the Nettlau collection. The IISH acquired this collection in 1935 from Max Nettlau, with financial support of the Centrale Arbeiders-Verzekerings- en Deposito- Bank (the Centrale). The contract was signed November 1935.

Content and Structure

Content Correspondence with Edward Carpenter, Walter Crane, Jean Grave, Auberon Herbert, John C. Kenworthy, , Charles Malato, Louise Michel, Max Nettlau, Fernando Tarrida del Màrmol, Federico Urales and others; balance sheets, manuscripts and printed material relating to Commonweal (New Series) and the Cantwell/Quinn Defense Committee 1893-1894, the International Socialist Congress 1896, the Chicago Martyrs Commemoration meeting November 1896 and the agitation of the Spanish Atrocities Committee. NB. Originally part of the Nettlau collection.
