USS Sirius May 2015 The Morning Report Second Star to the Right, Straight on ‘Till Morning Captain’s Log Captain’s Log, Stardate 93014.12, Commander Marci Jansen reporting. Greetings all! May has come to a close, and while it didn’t bring any Away Missions for us, it certainly wasn’t without significance. On May 1st, yet another of our beloved Star Trek crew beamed up to the Great Starship in the Sky. We will forever miss Grace Lee Whitney and her beauty, realism, and love of the fans. On a happier note, please join me in congratulating Lisa Stuckey, Commanding Officer of our Mothership, the USS Serling, on her promotion to Fleet Captain! Throughout the next few pages you’ll hear about the Region 7 Awards, a new charitable initiative we’re taking on, and, of course, pets, recipes, and all sorts of fun. Remember, if you have something you’d like to contribute to the newsletter, I’m always happy to hear from you. Whether it be a poem, a book review, recipe, or simply an article about your favorite TV show or fandom, our newsletter is open! Until next time! USS Sirius May 2015 The USS Sirius dims her lights in memory of Grace Lee Whitney. 2 USS Sirius May 2015 Friends, Crewmates, Countrymen, Bring Us Your Beans! Lima Beans, to be specific. It all started one day when someone Tweeted Misha Collins, and asked if he’d rather have 2 million followers or 2 million Lima beans. His response? Now, if you know anything about the Supernatural fandom, you know they don’t take this kind of thing lying down. They’ve organized a movement to send Misha 2 million lima beans. Now, while your Acting Captain thought that was great and fun (because he’ll probably donate them to a food bank), she had another idea for us. Instead of sending Misha beans, we’re collecting beans to give to our local food bank, the Horseheads Food Pantry. And that’s where you come in! Bring us your Lima beans! Canned Lima beans or dry Lima beans – it doesn’t matter. We’ll collect them all and present them, take a photo and tweet it to Misha! You can drop them off at the Acting Captain’s house, or bring them to our next meeting on June 27th. That gives us roughly a month to collect a whole heap o’ beans!! 3 USS Sirius May 2015 Region 7 Award Winners Announced I’m pleased to report the USS Sirius won for Newsletter of the Year!! The qualifications for this award were: “This award is presented to the chapter newsletter that best demonstrates key aspects of journalistic quality. Regularity of publication, effectiveness and attractiveness of design and layout, and quality and relevance of content are among the aspects considered” Considering this was our first go around entering the awards, we weren’t sure what to expect. Palmer died Friday of natural causes at a hospice care center in Connecticut, her longtime manager, Brad Lemack, told The Associated Press on Sunday. Palmer had appeared in films, on Broadway and in TV shows for decades before she took the role of Mrs. Voorhees in the 1980 movie in which young camp counselors suddenly begin meeting their bloody demise. The back story was that she was the mother of Jason Voorhees, who had died at the camp years before. He would come to life in several sequels that Palmer passed on. She would say in later years that she only took the role in that first film because she wanted the money to buy a new car. Palmer had appeared in numerous TV shows dating to the early 1950s Golden Age of Television. Among them were such classic dramas as "Kraft Theatre," ''Playhouse 90" and "Studio One." Her film credits included "Mr. Roberts" with Henry Fonda, "The Long Gray Line" with Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara, "Queen Bee" with Joan Crawford, and "The Tin Star" with Fonda and Anthony Perkins. Other TV credits included "Knot's Landing," ''The Love Boat," ''Newhart," ''Just Shoot Me" and "Murder, She Wrote." She also appeared in several Broadway plays, including "Same Time, Next Year" and "Cactus Flower." Palmer is survived by her daughter, Melissa Merendino. 7 USS Sirius May 2015 Officers’ Mess Gluten Free Blackberry Walnut Sticky Bisquits Ingredients: Topping: Bisquits: 5 tablespoons unsalted butter Gluten Free Bisquick Mix (3 eggs, milk, & shortening) 1 cup blackberries 2 cups blackberries, halved 2 tablespoons sugar sugar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice cinnamon 1/2 cup packed, dark brown sugar brown sugar 3/4 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped gluten free flour for "rolling" Grease 12-cup (or two 6-cup) muffin tins with butter. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Make topping: 1. Combine blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a bowl. Let it stand 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, mash it up. Strain the juice into a small bowl and throw away the solids. 2. Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in juice and stir until smooth and a little thick. Divide into the muffin cups. Add coarsely chopped walnuts. Set aside. For the buns: 1. Follow the directions on the box to make gluten free Bisquick biscuits. 2. Spread the dough out onto a floured flat surface with your fingers. Thickness doesn't really matter, you just want flat. 3. Sprinkle sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar & halved blackberries over the dough. 4. Scoop up equal parts of the dough, roll it up to sort of form biscuit like balls, and put into the muffin cups. 5. Place the muffin tins onto cookie sheets, and bake for 16 minutes. (Always double-check doneness with a cake tester inserted into the center.) 6. To remove from muffin pan, a serving spoon works best. The "buns" will seem mushy at first but they're definitely not. Plate them upside down, so the gooey nut mixture is on top. 8 USS Sirius May 2015 Interstellar Pets Captain Archer had Porthos the beagle. Data had Spot the cat.
