Introduction 2.1 Humanistic Psychology Humanistic psychology is a part of the third force movement in contemporary psychology. It emerged as a school of thought in psychology in reaction to the pessimistic views held by behaviorism and psychoanalysis about human nature. The term “humanistic” was first given by Abraham Maslow “to describe a position that focuses on the creative potentialities inherent in human beings, and that seeks ways to help them realize their highest and most important goals” (Ryckman, 2007, pg.417). The major theme of all humanistic theories is that all of us have an innate tendency to grow which helps us to move towards the realization of our inner potentialities, given that the environment is conducive. -

Creator, Creator, Take me back! Create me a second time And create me better! Ellen West had always been a little odd. She was a picky eater, and would put up a great resistance if anyone tried to force her to eat something she didn't care for. It was, in fact, her stubbornness that made her stand out. She always had to be first in favorite subjects, and couldn't bear to be home sick. By the time she was a teenager, her motto was "either Caesar or nothing!" But nothing could prepare her or her family for what was to come. At seventeen, her poetry begins to take a curious turn. One poem, called "Kiss Me Dead," asks the Sea-King to take her into his cold arms and kiss her to death. She throws herself into work, and praises work in her writings as "the blessing of our life." She is fascinated and appalled at the shortness and futility of life. When she is twenty, she takes a trip to Sicily. She eats heartily and puts on some weight, which her girl-friends tease her about. She responds by fasting and taking vigorous hikes. She becomes obsessed with the idea of being fat, hates herself for it, and starts to view death as a release from her misery. For a short while, she again buries herself in work and comes out of her depression. -

An "Authentic Wholeness" Synthesis of Jungian and Existential Analysis Samuel Minier Wittenberg University Eclectic approaches to psychotherapy often lack cohesion due to the focus on technique and procedure rather than theory and wholeness of both the person and of the therapy. A synthesis of Jungian and existential therapies overcomes this trend by demonstrating how two theories may be meaningfully integrated The consolidation of the shared ideas among these theories reveals a notion of "authentic wholeness' that may be able to stand on its own as a therapeutic objective. Reviews of both analytical and existential psychology are given. Differences between the two are discussed, and possible reconciliation are offered. After noting common elements in these shared approaches to psychotherapy, a hypothetical therapy based in authentic wholeness is explored. Lewis, M. (2014). Logotherapy and existential hermeneutics. The International Forum for Logotherapy, 37, 76-81. LOGOTHERAPY AND EXISTENTIAL HERMENEUTICS Marshall H. Lewis Hermeneutics is the study, the art, and the theory of interpretation. It is most commonly used in reference to the interpretation of texts, especially biblical or philosophical texts, but may correctly be said to encompass the entire field of written, verbal, and symbolic interpretation. The field of modern herme- neutics is said to have begun with the work of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wilhelm Dilthey, theologians and philosophers who were interested in the interpretation of texts from a living, human point of view. The field was expanded by Martin Heidegger and Edmund Husserl, figures of significance both to hermeneutics and to logotherapy. For our purposes, two paths emerge from their work. One path is that of psychiatry as influenced by the contributions of Medard Boss, Ludwig Binswanger, and Max Scheler. The other path is that of hermeneutics as influenced especially by Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. As part of his project to mediate among various theories of interpretation, Ricoeur argues that models such as Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis can be viewed as hermeneutics when hermeneutics is conceived of as either practical philosophy or ontology.5, p.228 Ricoeur’s work both grounds and warrants the effort of the current paper to develop logotherapy as a form of existential hermeneutics. To do so, I will first situate logotherapy within the discipline of hermeneutics. I find that it fits most comfortably within what David Klemm describes as a postmodern “practical philosophy.” 5, p.37 From there, l examine the key contributions that Ricoeur makes toward our understanding of logotherapy as a hermeneutic. -

1 A Century of Social Psychology: Individuals, Ideas, and Investigations GEORGE R. GOETHALS ^ f INTRODUCTION This chapter tells an exciting story of intellectual discovery. At the start of the twentieth century, social psy- chology began addressing age-old philosophical questions using scientific methods. What was the nature of human nature, and did the human condition make it possible for people to work together for good rather than for evil? Social pschology first addressed these questions by looking at the overall impact of groups on individuals and then began to explore more refined questions about social influence and social perception. How do we understand persuasion, stereotypes and prejudice, differences between men and women, and how culture affects thoughts and behavior? Existential Theories 2 ABSTRACT This chapter presents the historical roots of existential and humanistic theories and then describes four specific theories: European existential-phenomenological psychology, Logotherapy and existential analysis, American existential psychology and American humanistic psychology. After examining these theories, the chapter presents a reformulated existential-humanistic theory, which focuses on goal-striving for meaning and fulfillment. This meaning-centered approach to personality incorporates both negative and positive existential givens and addresses four main themes: (a) Human nature and human condition, (b) Personal growth and actualization, (c) The dynamics and structure of personality based on existential givens, and (c) The human context and positive community. The chapter then reviews selected areas of meaning-oriented research and discusses the vital role of meaning in major domains of life. Existential Theories 3 EXISTENTIAL AND HUMANISTIC THEORIES Existential and humanistic theories are as varied as the progenitors associated with them. They are also separated by philosophical disagreements and cultural differences (Spinelli, 1989, 2001). Nevertheless, they all share some fundamental assumptions about human nature and human condition that set them apart from other theories of personality. The overarching assumption is that individuals have the freedom and courage to transcend existential givens and biological/environmental influences to create their own future. -

The long history of educated discussion about the human self has not succeeded in producing a consensus. Scholars working in the same discipline do not necessarily agree on the fundamentals when de- bating how a human being should be understood. This is even truer as we cross disciplinary boundaries. Some think it is not necessary to presume the existence of something like the “self,” others consider it more fruitful to ap- proach human existence from different levels of observation altogether.
