A warm welcome to all to Hove Rugby Club for the fi rst home fi xture in and South East Division of the 2017/18 season.

Today is a special occasion as we celebrate fi ft een years at Hove Recreati on Ground, which has become such a valued home for the Hove rugby family and which has enabled the club to make great progress in that period. Our previous locati on – in Hove Park, not too Richard Hopkins far in terms of distance but with only one pitch and a clubhouse with limited faciliti es – was constraining the growth of the club both in terms of size and in terms of its openness to the community. This move would not have been possible without the support of the relati vely recently formed Brighton and Hove Council, whose vision in making the facility available has been rewarded by a club whose membership is growing and thriving, while embodying the values of inclusiveness, physical and mental well-being and health – and, of course, enjoyment – promoted by them.

Hence we are thrilled to welcome the following local dignitaries to the pre match lunch this aft ernoon and we hope very much that they will enjoy the occasion and pick up on the infecti ous camaraderie which is so evident throughout the club. Please welcome them :

The Mayor of Brighton and Hove – Councillor Mo Marsh – Mo represents Moulsecoomb and Bevendean; she is a teacher, an advocate of buses and, amongst others, supports the charity Albion in the Community - some common ground there, I think.

Robert Brown, MBE – the Mayor’s Consort – Robert is a ti reless worker for the community, especially young people, in Bevendean, as well as an individual with a huge enthusiasm for life and a survivor of many challenges!

Peter Kyle – Peter is the current MP for Hove and is a Ph D in community development (gained at the University of Sussex). He is deeply committ ed to the borough with a parti cular interest in educati on; he is chair of Portslade Aldridge Community Academy and a champion of apprenti ceship.

Ivor Caplin is a former MP for Hove who presided over the opening of the clubhouse fi ft een years ago. He retains a keen interest in the local community although his consultancy work oft en takes him overseas.

Councillor Jayne Bennett represents Hove Park ward and has served on the council since 2003 – just aft er our move. She serves on the planning committ ee and on the health overview and scruti ny committ ee. I believe that our plans for the extension to the clubhouse will be displayed and no doubt we shall be describing them to Jayne.

Councillor Vanessa Brown also represents Hove Park ward and has served since 1995, originally sitti ng on Hove Borough Council before the birth of the unitary authority. Her key interest is in ensuring children get the best educati on possible; she was a prime mover in establishing the Children’s Trust Board.

On behalf of the club I would like to extend a vote of thanks to all the above for taking the ti me and trouble to visit us – we hope that you will like what you see, enjoy your lunch and engage with us in conversati on. There is such an overlap in the interests of each one of you with the interests of the club that I can anti cipate some very interesti ng discussions. Please don’t forget to watch the rugby though! This aft ernoon’s lunch is also a sponsor’s lunch – something which we do twice a season to thank our sponsors for the terrifi c support which they provide, someti mes both fi nancially and in kind. A parti cular thank you to those, who have donated raffl e prizes for today’s draw. Many of you have supported the club throughout the last fi ft een years – and even before – and we are very grateful for that support. Thank you and welcome to the new season.

Today’s opponents for the 1st XV men are Dover RFC, with whom we renew a competi ti on which last took place a few years ago when both teams were playing at one level higher – in London One South. Dover were relegated last season and will doubtless be very keen to return to the higher level at the earliest opportunity; we have similar ambiti ons and so I am sure we can look forward to a closely fought contest. At the ti me of writi ng this message – September 6 – no league fi xtures have yet been played; however, we have enjoyed a promising pre-season playing some excellent fl owing rugby in typical Hove style and, if the September weather is kind, I am sure we can all look forward to an excellent game this aft ernoon.

On our second pitch - our women’s 1st XV have a match against Cheltenham, which will be well worth watching. The sheer enthusiasm and joy with which the women play the game has converted many a scepti cal male supporter, including me – and the commitment which they have, oft en travelling much further than the male teams to play, making rugby and the club a high priority, is an example to all.

And on our third pitch, we are hosti ng Brighton and Hove Sea Serpents (as far as I know the only Gay and inclusive team in Brighton and Hove) for their match against Hove III’s.

This completes the line up for quite a diverse day at the club – and this is without menti oning any of our mini and youth teams, boys and girls, which numerically comprise a much larger part of our playing membership than the senior teams.

Welcome, then, to the players and supporters of Dover and Cheltenham – we hope that you have a great day out in Hove and enjoy it.

And, fi nally, welcome to our players, coaches, offi cials, vice presidents, staff (a special menti on to Gill and Maddy who have the key tasks of making sure that food and drink are made available on a ti mely basis), supporters and other unannounced visitors. We are equally pleased to see you too and I sincerely believe that you will have a very enjoyable aft ernoon. It is my great pleasure to extend this welcome.

I’d like to say ‘thank-you’ to everyone who has made this club such a success over the years. These things don’t happen by accident - it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance from volunteers prepared to donate their ti me, energy and very oft en money. Sport in our city is thriving and I’m proud that Hove Rugby Club is part of that success. Whilst I struggle myself to pass a rugby ball I’ve Peter Kyle always admired those who can - as well as those stalwarts behind the scene who ensure that matches run smoothly week in, week out. On this special occasion of the 15th Anniversary at the Recreati on Ground, let us remember everyone who has contributed to where we are today.

Looking to the future we must ensure that this great club goes from strength to strength and that the communiti es that benefi t from such superb faciliti es conti nue to support it and help it prosper. To have everyone from the under 6s upwards playing rugby and to be providing wonderful faciliti es and training is already a fantasti c achievement and long may it conti nue. I look forward to day we can say one of our current youngsters scores a try in an shirt.

And fi nally, whilst winning isn’t everything - I sincerely hope the teams from Hove Rugby Club thrash the competi ti on this season!

Ladies and Gentlemen, honoured guests, it’s my privilege to have been invited to parti cipate this aft ernoon and to formally welcome you to Hove Rugby Club’s 15th Anniversary, here at Hove Recreati on Ground.

This day is also a celebrati on of rugby in the City and the partnerships that contribute in providing faciliti es for young people and adults to Councillor Mo Marsh play this wonderful game.

The Club has been in Hove since 1952 but in the city since 1933 (initi ally at East Brighton) and has now been at the Recreati on Ground for 15 years.

Its success is due in part to its diverse approach and real commitment to ensuring rugby in our City is accessible to all who want to be involved… playing or spectati ng and regardless of age, gender, sexuality or ethnicity.

Hove Rugby Club is proud to off er an inclusive programme in the City and has in excess of 500 under 18s who turn up every week in the season. The Club runs two Women’s teams and three girls’ teams - in additi on to the boys teams . It off ers three men’s senior sides and also has the Sea Serpents as an affi liate club.

Can I please wish the fabulous Hove Ladies good luck for their game versus Cheltenham Ladies in the League, which I believe kicks off fi rst.

Since the 2012 Olympic and the 2015 Rugby world Cup at the Amex, not only has Women’s rugby conti nued to grow and go from strength to strength - there is also a real buzz for the sport in the City – a sport that promotes a strong spirit and team work – of which is the essence of Hove Rugby Club and the role models that work together with the club to inspire young and old people alike in our City to achieve all they can.

Thank you to the President Richard Hopkins for inviti ng me today and I wish the Club all the best for another 15 years Plus of partnership in Brighton and Hove.

@HoveRugbyClub Brighton & Hove Sea Serpents Ian Chaplin Club President

The Sea Serpents were formed in November 2015. Our mission is to ensure that those who missed out on the enjoyment of rugby in their schooldays, primarily through their sexuality, but not exclusively so, have a way into the sport as a newbie adult. We played our fi rst full season in 2016-17 with a full roster of friendly matches through the season.

In April we took part in the Union Cup, in Madrid, winning our three group games, but losing to a ten year-old Club in the knockout stages. Ian Chaplin This season, we are starti ng with a roster of 45 players, with eight being new this season. It is also our fi rst season playing in the Sussex league Harvey’s of East ‘Bonfi re Boy’ and we are looking to gain both enjoyment and inspirati on from the bett er quality rugby that playing in a league brings.

As well at a full league season, we are also playing friendlies and, for our newer players att ending a tournament in Newcastle. The major end to our season will be the Bingham Cup, this year hosted by the Amsterdam Lowanders RFC but started in 2002 by the San Francisco Fog RFC and named for one of their players, killed on 9/11.

This is our third season, and we are honoured to be thought of as part of the #Hovefamily.

Chair’s Message Geraldine Brown Chair

Today sees us celebrati ng 15 years since we made the move from Hove Park to Hove Recreati on Ground, and what a lot we have to celebrate. When we made the move we hoped to see the club expand but I’m sure there were few of us who envisaged the scale of the expansion. Geraldine Brown Litt le did I think 15 years ago that not only would I sti ll be playing 15 years later but we would be running two Women’s teams and have a full Girls secti on, I also never imagined that I would be the Chair of the Club. I feel both these things are an indicati on of how special our Club is, a Club that is there to provide rugby for all.

We are one of the few sides in the County able to regularly fi eld 3 senior men’s teams and many of those playing are home grown talent nurtured through the mini and youth teams. At the start of September we had 4 sets of brothers playing in the First and Second team on the same day. Many former players are now down at the club every Sunday coaching the next generati on of rugby players in the same mini and youth secti ons they came through. We aspire to be the premier community rugby club in Sussex and I feel we are well on our way.

Our success in developing the Club means we are now having to look to expand the faciliti es further. With our senior men’s teams and our friends the Brighton and Hove Sea Serpents we are over capacity on Saturdays to be able to provide changing faciliti es for play on all 4 pitches. This is even more of a problem on Sundays where we need careful planning and arranging of fi xtures to ensure we can provide age and gender segregated changing faciliti es. We will be working hard over the next few months to secure planning permission to expand the club faciliti es and raise the funds to see these plans come to fruiti on so we can conti nue to be a club providing the opportunity for all to play the wonderful game of rugby and provide a space for community acti viti es in the heart of Hove.

I join Richard in welcoming our guests today and hope you all enjoy being part of the Hove Family for the day.

Fifteen years ago: Us and Them

Fift een years ago, we were a relati vely small club within the county, at least in terms of league performance. Our Women’s 1st XV won the Sussex Cup (fun fact: our current Chairman was captain on that day!) and fi nished 2nd in South East 1 but our Men’s 1st XV fi nished 7th in London 4 South-East and were relegated into Sussex 1. Since then we’ve improved on both fronts - our women now sit in the Championship (level 2) with a highest place fi nish of third and our men reached (level 6) before relegati on a few years ago into London 2 South East (level 7) with mid-table fi nishes a couple of seasons running.

The introducti on of the in the women’s game opens up new opportuniti es but brings with it new challenges around minimum standards and some of our pillars above have been built with that in mind. In the men’s game, new player payment guidelines will hopefully level out the playing fi eld a litt le and allow our squad to be even more competi ti ve.

While writi ng this arti cle, I had a look at some of the clubs who are currently in the men’s Nati onal Leagues and above and where they were fi ft een years ago. While we’re not tying our success to a parti cular league, I think it’s interesti ng how far some clubs have climbed in fi fteen years.

Fift een years is a long ti me - just look at some of the rises, fi ve of the current Championship clubs were playing at our level or below when we moved to the Rec!

Brighton and Hove is a city ripe for rugby success. The 2015 Rugby World Cup games were both sell outs at the Amex stadium and earlier that year, the city hit the highest ever att endance for an U20 Six Nati ons game. You will have seen the passionate support that Brighton and Hove Albion have received as they’ve gained promoti on to the Premier League in football.

There’s a lot of potenti al at this club. I wonder what people will be writi ng about us fi fteen years from now.

The Commercial Section of the Club is responsible for obtaining funds from as many sources as possible. Typically, these are our generous sponsor/ partners, grants from bodies, raffles, fund raising activities and similar. Growth

As I write this the League season hasn’t started although by the ti me you read this two games will have been played. Amateur rugby teams can change over the summer; players reti re, move or just drop down the club. New players arrive, someti mes from the other side of the world.

Our editor wanted predicti ons, but that seems perverse, so I am not Geoff Pollard going to sti ck my neck out.

So what follows are some musings from Mysti c Geoff on last season and the season ahead for Hove’s two top teams.

The Hove Women play in Women’s Championship South 1, the second ti er of women’s rugby in this country. Last season they fi nished third in the league, just two points below Trojans in second, an excellent result and probably the highest point any Hove rugby team has climbed.

As many will know there has been a controversial reorganisati on of the women’s Leagues with the creati on of a new improved Women’s premiership. This has brought with it the removal of second teams from our league and the promoti on into the league of some new teams.

Blackheath, who won Championship South East 2 last season join us, as do Bath and Plymouth Albion who fi nished fi rst and second respecti vely in Championship South West 2. Apart from anything else, these south west England clubs will demand more long coach trips for the team. Hopefully, for the travellers, the usual refreshments will be available on the coach.

Turning to the men, in April the Hove fi rst team fi nished an up and down season 6th in the league. Promoted out of our league, London 2 South East, were Medway, who should never have been with us in the fi rst place, and who deservedly fi nished second by 4 points over Dartf ordians. Relegated were Bromley and .

Joining us from London 1 South this season are old friends Dover, home of the best dumplings known to man. Following a process only understood by those in the RFU Barking join our league from . The much missed Mike Richardson knew how this sort of thing happened, something to do with level transfers. Anyway, we have new areas to explore in Dagenham in October when we have to cross the Thames for a league game for the fi rst ti me in living memory.

Up from below old friends Pulborough and Haywards Heath. Our league now has 5 Sussex sides, should be good for bar profi ts all round with plenty of local derbies to look forward to.

The other clubs in the league are all based in Kent although four of them are inside the M25 and within London Boroughs. The other two are in deepest East Kent, Dover already menti oned and Deal & Bett eshanger. The latt er is over 100 miles away by road; what happened to all the clubs in mid Kent?

Mysti c Geoff will return with his usual rambling predicti ons for the next home game on 7th October when we play Old Alleynians, a team we always expect to beat but somehow never manage to achieve.
