(2) Notes that Councillor Jason Dunn presented a motion to Newcastle City Council recently on the need for a police station in the western suburbs of Newcastle. (3) Calls on the Minister for Police and Emergency Services to ensure adequate increased police resources to curtail endemic social misbehaviour and to reduce apprehension in the community. (2) Notes that in 2013 the average cost of $528 for a greenslip will rise by $50. (3) Urges the Minister for Finance to reverse this substantial rise immediately and ensure insurance companies are more accountable to the community. (Notice given 20 February 2013—lapses 21 August 2013) 2484 STATE EMERGENCY SERVICES MS NOREEN HAY to move— That this House: (1) Calls on the Premier and the Minister for the Illawarra and the Minister for Police and Emergency Services to ensure the new State Emergency Services Office remains in Wollongong. (2) Notes the reduction of resources to emergency services personnel. (3) Recognises Wollongong as the heart of the Illawarra and the appropriateness of the SES Office being located in Wollongong. (4) Acknowledges the vital role the SES plays in assisting communities across the State often during very trying circumstances. (Notice given 20 February 2013—lapses 21 August 2013) 2485 AUSTRALIAN SOUTH SEA ISLANDERS MR ALEX GREENWICH to move— That this House: (1) Notes 25 August 2013 as Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day, marking 150 years since about 50,000 people on 62,000 indenture contracts from around 80 Pacific Islands were recruited or kidnapped to work in sugar cane fields where they were exploited. (2) Notes the Australian South Sea Islanders suffered inhumane treatment, the highest mortality rates of any immigrant group to Australia and mass deportations when the White Australia Policy was introduced. (3) Notes many of the 40,000 Australian South Sea Islander descendants who live in Australia remain marginalised and disadvantaged. (4) Notes thousands of Australian South Sea Islanders live in New South Wales but an official number has not been established. 8252 BUSINESS PAPER Tuesday 13 August 2013 (5) Notes then Premier Carr's Memorandum of Understanding of 1995 called for adequate programs and services but none targetted at South East Islander descendants have been implemented. (6) Calls on the Government to prepare a demographic, social and economic community profile, make a formal statement of recognition acknowledging the history, and develop a plan of action for removing disadvantage as recommended by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in 1992 and as the Queensland Government did in 2001 to help descendants create positive lives and futures. (2) Notes that many commuters depend on rail travel from Maitland, Tarro and Beresfield to Newcastle station for work and appointments. (3) Demands that the Minister for the Environment, the Minister for the Hunter and the Minister for Transport commit to funding a more efficient, direct and regular Hunter rail service. (2) Notes the crucial role the School Sports Unit plays in supporting the NSW PSSA and the NSW CHSSA in organising sports carnivals and encouraging student participation in sport. (3) Urges the Minister for Education to recognise the importance of maintaining the School Sports Unit and ensuring staff levels remain the same. (Notice given 20 February 2013—lapses 21 August 2013) 2494 BUS REPLACEMENT OF TRAINS MS SONIA HORNERY to move— That this House: (1) Notes that on 4 February 2013, buses replaced trains from North Sydney to Chatswood causing a delay of up to 20 minutes for Newcastle passengers. (2) Notes that the increased number of buses caused significant traffic delays on roads out of the city. (3) Notes that the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Planning, with the support of Hunter Liberal Members, wish to replace trains in Newcastle with buses. (4) Urges the Government to reverse its decision to scrap the rail line in Newcastle.
