Print Post 739016/0005 2 JANUARY 2013 Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225). Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters.

President’s Report The Exec meeting date was after the time I had to get a report into the editor, so really I have nothing to relay to you, although the Exec meeting on 4 December looks very busy. So have a good Christmas, do plenty of walking. The programme is looking absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I won’t be doing much walking in January as Wyn and I are preparing our garden for the Australian Open Garden scheme. We are open on Day. I’ll be sick of gardening by then and will be very keen to get back into the bush for my first February walk. Rupert Manners, President

16 JANUARY 2013 19 Jan Sat Southport Lagoon ME 13 km 50 m 7 hr Lee Douglas 6225 5361 (not after 9pm) Leprena/ This will be a very early start as we will have a long drive to Ida Bay. I have arranged for the to drop us off at the start of the walk and to collect us on the return to take us back to the cars. Expect a reasonably graded but undulating track for parts of the walk. We will also walk along sandy beaches and rocky coastlines. In good weather this is a spectacular place to visit. Pace will be moderate. At this point the train ride will cost approximately $22 dollars return which is to be paid on the day. Take wet weather gear, bring plenty of water (there may not be any fresh water at this time of time of the year), thermos and camera. Prospectives welcome and must book with the leader. Please contact leader for departure details.

Portable fuel stoves required. Numbers limit. Booking essential and by email preferred.

20 Jan Sun Red Paint - Zig Zag Tracks SM 5.5 km 450 m 3.5 hr Tony Judd 0419 471 322 Wellington Walks Meet at Fern Glade car park to car pool, ready to leave at 10:30am. As parking is limited at the Chalet and there will be many other mountain users on a weekend, car pooling is essential – no exceptions. From the summit , return to the Chalet via the Zigzag and Organ Pipes tracks. If the weather is inclement, we will do an alternative on the lower slopes.

23 Jan Wed Cash’s Lookout, Eaglehawk Neck SE 6 km 250 m 4 hr David Leaman 6244 1233 Taranna/Storm Bay Something a little adventurous, but scenically magnificent. We will take a catamaran from Southport around to Port Davey with a maximum of 12 kayaks on board, landing at the hut site at Bond Bay. You will need sealed possum proof containers to stash food as we have two sorties. First paddle across Bond Bay and Kelly Basin to within 1km of the coast, stow kayaks and walk across to coast and up to Wreck Bay to camp behind the shipwreck on the beach. It was quite an impressive site from Mt Hean a few years ago, half the ship is stuck in the sand, exposed at low tide. Day walk up Mt Hean, then return to kayaks, pick up more supplies from our stash, and head up the . There is wonderful camping at settlement point, and we will explore upstream as far as the Davey Gorge. Also will go up the De Witt River for a day walk up a couple of unnamed but impressive peaks. After exploring as much as we like we return to civilization on the catamaran. The intention is to leave Kent and companion(s) at the De Witt River to walk out over the Propsting Range, Piners Peak and Davey Sugarloaf to and . 30 Jan Wed Mt Connection/Pulpit Rock ME 10 km 400 m 4.5 hr Tony Judd 6229 7673 0419 471 322 Wellington Walks/Sorell This walk tends to fall between the categories. It's a bit long for a Short – although recommended for SE walkers who would like to extend themselves - and a very short Medium. Conditions underfoot are easy, but as is common on the mountain, parts of the track are studded with stone. There are a few wet patches, but most of this is alleviated by very welcome duckboarding. The pace will be slow. Meet at the car park below Big Bend ready to move off at 10:00am. We will then walk up to Big Bend and from there follow the fire trail until we turn off onto the Collins Bonnet track which will take us to within 100m of the summit of Mt Connection. The Pulpit is just 150m away. Off track walking is on easy open scrubland. We then retrace our steps to the cars. The only downside of this is the unavoidable and tedious climb back to Big Bend. Rationalise this as a good workout for the legs. On a good day you will enjoy superb panoramic views including surrounding peaks and the Huon and Derwent Valleys. If the weather is inclement, we may do an alternative on the lower slopes. As usual, come fully equipped with appropriate clothing and comestibles.

30 Jan Wed Bob’s Birthday Bush Bash - Ralphs Bay MM 12 km 200 m 4 hr Bob Boocock 0400 856 456 Blackmans Bay/Taroona Come and help Bob celebrate his biblical “use-by-date" with a splendid one-way coastal walk along Ralphs Bay utilising a bus return. OVERNIGHT & EXTENDED WALKS

8-12 February Pindars Peak MR (LM on database) John Street 6239 1690 [email protected] Maps 1:25,000 Leprena, Precipitous, Prion. Now that you have read Sheila Reynolds’ article in Tramp 2012 you will have realised that this is the walk that you have always wanted to do. Here is your opportunity to do so. Positions of 'born optimist', 'eager beaver' JANUARY 2013 23 '25kg pack carrier', 'provider of the chocolates' and 'wobbly knee person' are available. Be warned however that it is a big ascent to Moonlight Ridge (900 metres) and the lightest possible pack that is still consistent with your safety and comfort is therefore advisable. Wobbly knees are probably not a good idea. The pace will be moderate. We will depart Hobart on Friday afternoon and stop for coffee at the Dover Bakery. We will walk in about 1 kilometre on the flat and camp near Mystery Creek Cave. On Saturday we will follow the track along Moonlight Ridge and camp at Reservoir Lakes where there is a delightfully sheltered spot amongst King Billy Pines or a pleasantly sunny spot by the lake. On Sunday we will daywalk to Pindars Peak and return. On Monday we will wander out to the Hippo and hopefully return. Possibly also Mt La Perouse. We will walk out on Tuesday morning. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Numbers limit. Booking essential and by email preferred.

16-24 Feb Maria Island Dawn Albert 6225 0921

23/24 Feb - 3 March EXT Nichols & Princess Ranges, 11km, Olegas/Lancelot, 25km, Olga 100km MR Andrew Davey 62396178 [email protected] The walk starts 24 Feb possibly with late afternoon car trip on 23rd to overnight near Strathgordon for an early start. The trip should be up to eight days.. I have a good GPS track of our successful trip of last summer to the high point of the Nichols Range, so much less scrub-bashing than usual. Some campsites are scrubby.. Participants MUST be fit, experienced, observant, fully self-contained and readily accept their share of scrub- bashing. Expect some steep ground, two major river crossings and much else potentially hazardous. Contact the leader early for further details; a numbers limit applies and several have expressed strong interest. Car trip about 345 km return.

25-27 Feb Bruny Island MM Warwick Risby 6225 1711 We will travel to Bruny on 9.30am ferry on Monday 25 Feb and do the Cape Queen Elizabeth walk. 9-11 March Taste of the Arthurs MM/MR 32km 1100m Carolynne Smith 6229 3337 The plan is to set up camp at Junction Creek or somewhere on the plain and do a day return trip, possibly as far as Lake Cygnus. A long climb up Moraine A, leads to great views and a relatively easy ridgeline traverse. This is a trip for those who feel they are not able to undertake the whole traverse due to time or other constraints, and for those who would love to have a peek to see why the range is so special. Numbers limit will apply. Fit prospectives welcome. Full overnight gear required. Contact leader for departure details. Book by 4 March.

11-17 March Snowy to Wellington MR Rupert Manners 6292 1310 [email protected] I have been on the committee which has been looking at the proposal to have a walk from Wellington to the Snowys and so have spent some time looking at maps of the area. The plan is to walk from Snowy North over Nevada and Snowy South and then cross over to the and walk into Hobart. The walk will involve a high level traverse of the Snowys, some walking on forestry roads and fire trails, a bit of scrub, maybe a creek crossing or two, but it will be an adventure. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Numbers limit. Book with the leader by 1 March.

16-17 March BWT weekend Fingal Valley Andrew Davey [email protected] Bushwalking Tasmania is having its biennial weekend and the plan is to stay at Fingal Valley and do day walks from there. 24-27 April Fagus at Cradle MM 20+km 500-1000m Carolynne Smith 6229 3337 JANUARY 2013 25 I am thinking of making a base at Scott Kilvert Hut – a very comfortable hut on 2 levels – and undertake day trips from there. Might also be nice to camp at Lake Will. The idea of the walk is to mainly enjoy the spectacle of the autumn colours of the fagus, with day trips to Waterfall Valley and Lake Will or Suttons Tarn. Depending on weather conditions, options for summits may include , Cradle, Benson Peak and Mt Emmett. Snow and ice are always a possibility. We may do some back tracking on the day trips but the scenery is always lovely. I am finishing the trip on Saturday as I have a family commitment. Numbers limit will apply. Prospectives welcome. Full gear required. Departure and final details from leader. Book by 19 April.

WALK REPORTS South Wellington Circuit - Nov with Philip Le Grove Ten walkers headed off in overcast skies and a threat of rain. The Melbourne Cup Sweep organiser had the horses drawn during morning tea at the Giant Cairn and payment was collected alongside the Potato Fields while having lunch. A shower after lunch did not dampen the groups enthusiasm to be at the cars in time to drive to the Fern Tree Cafe to watch the big race. Hot drinks and raisin toast supplied by our hosts whilst riding our horses across the line completed a wonderful day. For the record, BF won the sweep.

Smiths Monument - Rocking Stone - Nov with Barry Ford Despite a dire weather forecast, the day was reasonable and it was only necessary to don our coats against a cool strong wind along the top. Smiths Monument is starting to show the signs of rust coming through the paint, so it will be for the Club, or the Wellington Trust, to consider repainting in the next year or two. Rain commenced just as we finished our cuppa at the cars. Seventeen starters.

Peter Murrell Reserve and Tinderbox Hills - Nov with Sheila Reynolds In perfect weather 18 members started from the leader's house. In order to cross a very busy 100kph highway, we first forged a path through long grass, buttercups and blackberries to reach the underpass next to the Antarctic Division. This led us straight on to the Coffee Creek Track on the southern side of the Peter Murrell Reserve which is very popular with bird watchers. Following a circuitous route, we made our way into Tinderbox Hills for lunch at the top. On the return journey we met a team of botanists doing seed collection for the Botanical Gardens. Afternoon tea was enjoyed on the sundeck back at the leader's home.

Mt Montague - Nov with Roger Hurd Almost the perfect day for this walk. Took the Thark Ridge track to the Municipal Cairn for morning coffee and onto the Montague fire trail. Excellent viewing for lunch on Montague. Retraced our steps again in perfect conditions. Our group enjoyed a longer walk on the Wellington Range.

26 JANUARY 2013 Mt Nelson - Nov with Wendy Pearson Seven members and 3 prospectives had a pleasant circuit walk on Mt Nelson in superb weather. Clear views from the Signal Station at lunch time and a good display of flowers enhanced the day’s walk.

Crescent Bay/Mt Brown - Nov with Rob McGregor The florescence may not have been quite as promised in the preview, but 5 happy souls spent a day finding minute orchids, talking to flowers, learning botanical names and making posies!

Orana - 2 Birthdays - Nov with Phyl Wyatt Despite hail, thunder and plenty of rain 35 friends of Bob’s and Barbara’s enjoyed a BBQ in the barn at Orana sitting around the new wood heater. A great day with friends from the Walking Club to celebrate their 80th and 90th birthdays. A very short walk due to the weather.

Burnetts Hill/Mickeys Beach - Nov with Walter Bartlett Eight walkers enjoyed the interesting terrain around Egg & Bacon Bay. Several cameras were kept busy capturing images of the views and orchids to be found on the way. The day’s activities culminated in afternoon tea at the leader’s home.

Mt Field West - Nov with John Gora Starting with excellent walking weather, we reached the top of the Rodways before the snow, hail and fog set in. After some discussion, we retreated back to Tarn Shelf, lunching at Newdegate Hut and eventually returning the same way into more snow and hail. Actually, despite not reaching our original destination and the exhilarating weather, it was a rather good trip. Mountains are supposed to be like this...?

Mt Field - Nov with Helen Daly This walk was meant to go to Mt Bridges however due to weather forecasts, it was changed to Mt Field East. We went in via Lake Nichols and did a circuit coming out via the Lake Fenton track end. Mild sunny breaks. Gale force winds on summit of Field East so party retreated to a lower venue for lunch.

The Thumbs - FlashWalk – Nov with Rohan Hutchinson Seven walkers enjoyed a long, warm, sunny day combining the delights of two-wheeled transport and Shanks’ pony. The first 5km was by mountain bike along the pleasantly- graded Adamsfield Track to the base of Packers Spur. Here the bikes were dumped and we proceeded on foot, following an old vehicular track which extends further up the spur than expected. Pretty soon the photo-ops became too tempting as we fought for the role of Tail End Charlie with cameras at the ready. After the road a decent pad was followed amid lovely open button grass and spring flowers. A couple of steepish stretches were negotiated before sidling below distinctive conglomerate towers and a brief patch of scrub just before the diminutive summit. On top, wonderful views were enjoyed of the Denisons, JANUARY 2013 27 Clear Hill, Mt Field, Mt Anne and beyond. Retracing our steps and pedals we stopped for a welcome drink at the Adams River.

Woodvine Nature Reserve - Nov with Nick Hume There was a very good turnout for this walk. The many pairs of eyes soon sought out a myriad of native flowers: Spotted Sun Orchids, Caladenias, Wild Violets, Black Eyed Susans, Golden Peas, fragrant Stackhousias, and lots more. Thank you Bonnie, Kevin, Michael, and others, for your botanical knowledge. Sheila became quite attached to some of the native fauna - tiger leeeches. Sheila welcomed the attention of lots of helpers all willing to provide bandaids and sympathy. John seconded a small party to look for an historical fireplace dating from the earlier settlement of Woodvine farm. Our tradition of afternoon tea with cake and coffee completed a wonderful day. Well done to you all.

Walls of Jerusalem - Nov with Rupert Manners This was an introductory overnight walk and we were blessed with perfect weather in a truly beautiful place. We climbed Mt Jerusalem, The Temple, Solomons Throne and King Davids Peak and visited the Pool of Bethesda and the Pool of Siloam. Those who were new to overnight walking certainly experienced its pleasures.

O’Gradys Falls - Nov with Bob Wyatt There were 10 in the party to O’Gradys Falls. Morning tea in a local garden before continuing up Bracken Lane and around to the falls. Th rhododendrons in all the gardens were flowering very well. Lots of orchid leaves on the track but only one almost out.

Mt Marian - Collins Bonnet - Nov with Andrew Briggs Three starters enjoyed perfect weather and were rewarded with great views from Mt Marian and Collins Bonnet. More points in the bag. A great day made better with great company.

Lake Rhona – Nov with Alison Street With good weather plus David Griffith's enthusiasm, we camped at Lake Rhona then did a day walk to the top of Reeds Peak and along the ridge to Bonds Craig. The Denison Range provided stunning views and pleasant walking. Richea Creek was awash with lemon scented boronia and yellow pea flowers. We crossed the Gordon easily on the large tree that has fallen across the river. The river dropped a metre in 48 hours. It took us 8 hours to Lake Rhona and 7 back. Because Rupert has revalued the concept of "a little bit of mud" I cannot say that there was any mud at all along the Vale of Rasselas. A great trip with congenial company.
