In Italy, Cappuccino Is Traditionally Consumed Once A Day With Breakfast. National Cappuccino Day is observed annually on November 8. A nice hot cup of cappuccino is perfect on a frosty morning, meeting with friends or just to enjoy a creamy cuppa. The word cappuccino comes from the Capuchin friars and is the diminutive form of cappuccio in Italian, meaning hood or something that covers the head. This popular coffee beverage got its name not from the hood on their habits but from the color of the hooded robes that the friars wore. (The Capuchin friars is an Order of friars in the Catholic Church, among the chief offshoots of the Franciscans.) The espresso machine was first patented by a man named Luigi Bezzera in 1901. In 1945 Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine which further popularized the cappuccino. The Mid 1990s – Cappuccino was made more widely available to North Americans as upscale coffee houses sprang up. Late 1990′s to Early 2000′s – Cappuccinos became popular in the United States concurrent with the boom in the American coffee industry. The start of 21st Century – A modified short-cut version of the cappuccino started being served at fast-food chains. While steaming the milk you must pay close attention to attain the correct ratio of foam, thus making the cappuccino one of the most difficult espresso-based beverages to make properly. A skilled barista may create artistic shapes while he/she is pouring milk on top of the espresso coffee. In Italy, cappuccino is traditionally consumed once a day with breakfast. -

That’s how two coffee authorities from two coffee capitals describe the silky coating left on the taste buds by the fi rst deposit of espresso crema. Espresso, Ital- ian for “express,” can be explained as “fast coffee.” The word is also associated with espressamenta, meaning “expressly” (as in a coffee “expressly for you”). What- ever the interpretation, espresso indicates the high-pressure extraction of coffee. And the thick surface layer of reddish- brown crema is the hallmark of a well- prepared cup. No espresso machine can extract desir- able aromas—caramel, chocolate, fl oral, fruity, smoky, earthy—not already pres- ent in the coffee. Not the fi rst espresso machine, a steam-driven cylindrical pro- totype patented in 1901 by Italian engi- neer Luigi Bezzera. Not the piston-driven 16 mechanism fi rst manufactured in the late theater with tasting tables, video confer- 1940s by Achille Gaggia, nor the pump- encing, and up to four interpreters sitting driven models developed since. It’s large variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment along Broadway make it a thriving urban center. The area is well served by car and public transportation but is predominantly pedestrian in nature due to the close proximity to academic, heathcare, and religious institutions as well as downtown Seattle. The many Neighborhood Districts in Capitol Hill represent the varied scales, density and character that exist throughout the area. The West Slope District specifically is characterized by its dense variety of housing types and mature street trees and subsequent pedestrian experience. The proposed development at the corner of Belmont Avenue and E. Republican Street will respect the quality and character of the neighborhood through its streetscape quality, building character, and open-space design. My passion was born over fifteen hundred years ago. As legend has it, an abyssinian goatherd named Kaldi found his mischievous goats dancing wildly around a shrub with waxy green leaves and clusters of dark red berries. Tasting the fruit, Kaldi joined in the berry-induced frenzy. Soon after, a learned imam from a local monastery passed by and took notice of the eccentric behavior triggered by these berries. He brought the berries back to his monastery and subjected them to a series of tests including parching and boiling. The elixir he created was soon distributed to other monasteries in Arabia Felix to be used as a stimulant during late hours of prayer. Over the next several years the beverage spread throughout the world. Coffee was born. Since then, coffee has become one of the most traded commodities in the world, second only to oil. The development of the espresso machine in 1855 transformed the coffee world. Its creator, Edward Loysel de Santais, aspired to brew coffee faster, but the true potential of espresso was not realized until the development of high-pressure espresso pumps a hundred years later. When properly brewed, espresso should taste similar to the aroma of freshly ground coffee. In the extraction process, water is pushed through the packed espresso, forcing volatile aromatics into a golden, creamy layer called the crema, which rests above the espresso. The volatile aroma remains trapped in the crema for a brief thirty seconds, waiting to be consumed, before it dissipates into the air. Espresso should be dark-red, thick like honey, and have a golden-red crema.
