Set in Motion: Dance Criticism and the Choreographic Apparatus By Kate Mattingly A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies and the Designated Emphasis in New Media in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair Professor Abigail De Kosnik Professor Anton Kaes Professor SanSan Kwan Spring 2017 Copyright © Kate Mattingly All Rights Reserved Abstract Set in Motion: Dance Criticism and the Choreographic Apparatus By Kate Mattingly Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies Designated Emphasis in New Media University of California, Berkeley Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair This dissertation examines the multiple functions of dance criticism in the 20th and 21st centuries in the United States. I foreground institutional interdependencies that shape critics’ practices, as well as criticism’s role in approaches to dance-making, and the necessary and fraught relations between dance criticism and higher education. To challenge the pervasive image of the critic as evaluator and of criticism as definitive, Set in Motion focuses on conditions that produce and endorse certain forms of criticism, and in turn how this writing has gained traction. I employ the concept of a choreographic apparatus to show shifting relations amongst writers, artists, publications, readers, institutions, and audiences. Their interactions generate frameworks that influence dance’s history, canon, and disciplinary formations. I propose a way of situating criticism as a form of writing that intersects with, informs, and influences both history and theory. Set in Motion expands discourse on writing by examining the continuities and discontinuities in practices over the course of a century.

CREATING SELFTHROUGH DANCE PERFORMANCE: A SELECTIVE INQUIRY INTO THE LIFE AND WORK OF JOSEARCADIO LIMoN (1908 -1972) A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Fine Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sarah Marie Adams, B.A. ***** The Ohio State University 1998 Master's Examination Committee: Approved by Professor Angelika Gerbes, Ph.D., Advisor Professor Michael Kelly Bruce Professor Sheila Marion, Ph.D. Professor Rosalind Pierson Department of Dance Copyright by Sarah Marie Adams 1998 ABSTRACT José Limón (1908 - 1972) was one of the most prominent American modern dance choreographer-performers of this century. His work survives through contemporary performances of the José Limón Dance Company, and through his students' teachings. However, Limón's contribution to the field of dance remains dramatically under-researched. While there are at least two forthcoming publications which will address Limón's life and work, dance research to date has largely neglected the contributions of this major artist. My thesis project addresses this gap in dance scholarship, exploring the manner in which Limón created his identity through dance. By studying José Limón, I also seek to understand the artistic heritage in which I place myself, as a dancer trained in the Limón style. I have investigated José Limón's life and work by consulting a wide variety of source materials. These include Limón's personal correspondence and handwritten autobiography, films of Limón's dancing and choreography, my own physical experience of dancing his choreographic movement, personal and previously recorded interviews with Limón dancers, and dance criticism texts which include analyses of Limón's work.

  • PERFORMING ENERGY American Rhythm Dancing and “The Great Articulation of the Inarticulate”
PERFORMING ENERGY American Rhythm Dancing and “The Great Articulation of the Inarticulate” Billy Siegenfeld Energy is the only life, and is from the body. (William Blake) Emotion is an organizer of form. (Ezra Pound) In the 2003 documentary Rize, Li’l C says this about the explosive urban dancing he does called “krumping”: People have problems, you know, didn’t get this, didn’t get that . Just the fact that you can get krumped, you can channel that anger, anything that negative that has happened in your life, you can channel that into your dancing.1 His thought relates to a comment Jack Cole made forty years earlier. In an interview published in 1963 Cole is asked whether he would call a ballerina dancing ballet steps to jazz music “jazz dance.” He says, No. No, it wouldn’t because for one thing . it would lack the essence of jazz, which is its feeling.2 Cole and Li’l C share a point of view about the kind of dancing generally characterized as “jazz”: it comes from a dancer’s feeling and is crafted so that that feeling impacts on the audience in performance. Dancing is not just about the technique the body masters or about the movement itself. 2 Cole’s remark that jazz’s feeling-essence is lacking when done by ballet dancers aligns his thinking with that of the pre-modern dance and modern dance mentors he worked with -- Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, then Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, who both danced with Denishawn before Cole arrived.
