CHECK IT OUT ONLINE: floridatheatre.com/80sonforsyth WELCOME LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends and Patrons,

If you came to the theatre tonight via Bay Street, you may have noticed that there seems to be more sunshine in our neighborhood. That’s both a metaphor and an actual fact, because the demolition of the old City Hall and Courthouse this winter cleared out some air space. We’re excited about the forward momentum downtown, and now that the way is clear on that particular property, just a block away, we look forward to what’s coming next.

The Florida Theatre has been downtown since 1927. For 92 years this historic theatre has been providing historic entertainment to the citizens of Jacksonville. A lot has happened over those decades. There were good times, and bad times. There were up times, and down times, but through it all, the Florida Theatre continued to provide terrific entertainment, because great music, dance, theatre and film never go out of style.

The architects of this building had some foresight, because 92 years later, we continue to use the building for art forms that weren’t even created then. Jazz, dance and musical theatre existed then, but not in their current forms, and in many cases, the artists that created rock and roll, standup comedy, hip hop and modern dance weren’t even born yet.

Those of us who currently work at the Florida Theatre are just the temporary caretakers of this building. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and we pave the way for those who will come after us. One thing remains constant, however: we are here to connect the artists with you, the audience.

Cheer for more, and please come back and see us again soon. Floridatheatre.com is our official web site.
