STACHYURUS- Staartaar Dendraflora Nr 33 - 1996 R.T. H_OUTMAN Een van de geslachten waar niet direct aan wordt gedacht, als het gaat om winterbloeiende gewassen, is Stachyurus. Deze tamelijk onbekende plant kan in de toekomst tot het standaardsortiment boomkwekerijgewassen behoren. Er is een toenemende vraag naar een breder sortiment met andere sierwaarden dan bloei in het voorjaar of de zomer; Stachyurus past hier zeer goed in. SYSTEMATIEK Stachyurus is een klein geslacht, dat in de familie van de Stachyuraceae is geplaatst. Over de classificatie van deze familie zijn de systematici het niet geheel eens, maar nadat de Stachyuraceae voorheen bij de Theaceae waren ondergebracht, wordt de familie nu als op zichzelf staand beschouwd binnen de orde van de Violales. Ook worden argumenten voor verwantschap met de Flacourtiaceae aangevoerd. Stachyurus bevat acht tot tien soorten, afhankelijk van de interpretatie, die de verschillende systematici hanteren. In Nederland zijn drie soorten in cultuur. Naast S. chinensis en S. praecox, wordt ook S. himalaicus op zeer beperkte schaal gekweekt. Over de kenmerken van de laatstgenoem de soort bestaat enige verwarring, hierover meer bij de soortsbeschrijving. MORFOLOGIE De tot Stachyurus behorende soorten zijn eenhuizige bladverliezende of groenblijvende struiken tot kleine bomen met verspreide bladstand. De enkelvoudige bladeren hebben gewoonlijk een gezaagde bladrand. De bloeiwijze is een okselstandige, hangende tros, die bestaat uit een aantal bloemen. Ze worden in het najaar gevormd. De afzonderlijke bloemen en vooral de vruchten zijn zeer kort gesteeld. Hieruit blijkt, dat - morfologisch gezien - de bloemen in een tros en dus niet in een aar bijeen staan. (De Nederlandse naam staartaar is daarom feitelijk onjuist). -

Gettys5 1Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan; 2Suzhou Polytechnic Institute of Agriculture, China; 3Faculty of Agriculture, Kinki University, Japan; 4Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University, Japan; 5Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, University of Florida, USA ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to collect basic information on vegetation in road crack, especially in curbside crack of road, for evaluating plant biodiversity in urban landscape. A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area. -

Their frequent used in treatment of microbial infections has been led to isolation of the active compounds and evaluation of their antimicrobial properties. Cyclamen coum Miller is one of these plants with a secondary metabolite called saponin which has antimicrobial 1Department of Biology, Faculty of activity. Pyocyanin is one of the virulence factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic Science, University of Alzahra, Tehran pathogen, causing lung diseases. The present study indicates the effect of cyclamen saponin 1993893973, Iran extracts on pyocyanin production by P. aeruginosa. We prepared three different types of plant extracts (ethanolic, aqueous and butanolic) from tuber of C. coum. The effect of 0, 10 and 20 mg of cyclamen saponin were tested by agar disk diffusion technique. Pyocyanin purification was done from microbial broth culture and the extracted pyocyanin was measured by spectrophotometric method. Results showed that the production of pyocyanin was remarkably reduced by ethanolic extract of saponin. In addition increased saponin concentration led to further decrease in pyocyanin content. (Kukavica mountain, south- east Serbia) was used as an extraction material in this study. The aqueous extract has been obtained by reflux extraction at the boiling temperature with hydromodu- lus 1:20 m/v during 180 minutes. Inflorescence corymbiform or umbelliform, sometimes racemose or large paniculate. Sepals (4 or)5, rarely 6. Petals (4 or)5, rarely 6, seldom absent. Stamens (4 or 5 or)8(or 10 or 12); filaments distinct. Carpels 2; ovules (1 or)2 per locule. Fruit a winged schizocarp, commonly a double samara, usually 1-seeded; embryo oily or starchy, radicle elongate, cotyledons 2, green, flat or plicate; endosperm absent. 2n = 26. About 129 species: widespread in both temperate and tropical regions of N Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central and North America; 99 species (61 endemic, three introduced) in China. Acer lanceolatum Molliard (Bull. Soc. Bot. France 50: 134. 1903), described from Guangxi, is an uncertain species and is therefore not accepted here. The type specimen, in Berlin (B), has been destroyed. Up to now, no additional specimens have been found that could help clarify the application of this name. Worldwide, Japanese maples are famous for their autumn color, and there are over 400 cultivars. Also, many Chinese maple trees have beautiful autumn colors and have been cultivated widely in Chinese gardens, such as Acer buergerianum, A. davidii, A. duplicatoserratum, A. griseum, A. pictum, A. tataricum subsp. ginnala, A. triflorum, A. truncatum, and A. wilsonii. Introduction The Himalya Center of Plant Diversity [1] is a narrow band of biodiversity lying on the southern margin of the Himalayas, the world’s highest mountain range with elevations exceeding 8000 m. The plant diversity of this region is defined by the monsoonal rains, up to 10,000 mm rainfall, concentrated in the summer, altitudinal zonation, consisting of tropical lowland rainforests, 100–1200 m asl, up to alpine meadows, 4800–5500 m asl. Hara and co-workers have estimated there to be around 6000 species of higher plants in Nepal, including 303 species endemic to Nepal and 1957 species restricted to the Himalayan range [2–4]. -

Although the skies cleared for our sec- ond day, the flora was depauperate as we headed west of Kunming, toward Dali, on the main highway connecting the two towns. We made our first stop in a small cemetery one hour west of Kunming at 6, sooft (tgggm) elevation. The purpose of this stop was to exam- ine a large tree of the rare Crtlocedrus rnacrdlepis. Our guide, Dr. Guan Kayun from the Kunming Institute of Botany, explained that, in this region, the only trees and native flora remaining were in cemeteries due to the overabundance of agrarian activities. rIIImer'S Cartable where parenr plant was found nsua 80 MAGNOUA As we passed the caretak- ers' quarters, which were near- ly obscured by racks of drying corn, we spotted the Calocedrus. Obviously, this could be due to the stressed environmental conditions un- der which it was growing. I looked the plant over for seed, but it wasn't until I got on my knees did I find six old seeds on the ground underneath the plants. -

VOL. 31.No.4 APRIL, 1956 MORTON ARBORETUM JOY MORTON· FOUNDER BULLETIN OF LIS LE, ILLINOIS POPULAR INFORMATION THE ORNAMENTAL PRUNUS, AN APPRAISAL The genus Prunus which includes the Almonds, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches and Plums constitutes one of the most important subdivisions of the Rose (Rosaceae) Family, not only from an economic standpoint but ornamentally as well. And, with the fruit value obvious to all, our interest in this appraisal is largely concerned with the latter point, the group's aesthetic qualifications. Floral effectiveness and ornamental foliage accounts for the popularity of a majority of the species included, with showy fruit, decorative bark, picturesque stature and miscellaneous lesser attractions providing the additional interests. Trees Two very hardy Prunus share the distinction of being the first trees in the Arboretum to leaf out in the spring. These are the closely related flaky barked Amur Cherry, (Prumts Maackii), from Korea and Man churia and the hybrid Meyer Chokecherry (P. Meyeri) with smooth, darker colored bark. Both are low branched round headed trees (to 45 ft.) whose leaf buds responding to the first sign of warmth sometimes break into leaf in late March or early April. The floral display usually does not come until later in the month, when pendulous racemes of small, very fragrant flowers transform the trees into bouquets of white. Earliest bloom is produced by the dainty David's Peach, 11 davidianan, slender branched, willow-like small tree from China, which after a mild winter may open its fragile pink blooms before March is over. Another bud tender, but sturdier appearing tree, is the Ansu Apricot (P.
