WEAPONIZED HUMOR: THE CULTURAL POLITICS OF TURKISH-GERMAN ETHNO-COMEDY by TIM HÖLLERING B.A. Georg-August Universität Göttingen, 2008 M.Ed., Georg-August Universität Göttingen, 2010 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Germanic Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2016 © Tim Höllering, 2016 Abstract My thesis aims to show how the humor of Turkish-German ethno-comedians fulfills a double purpose of entertaining its audience while advancing a cultural political agenda that Kathrin Bower called “transnational humanism.” It includes notions of human rights consensus, critical self-reflection, respect, tolerance, and openness to cultural diversity. Promoting these values through comedy, the artists hope to contribute to abating prejudice and discrimination in Germany’s multi-ethnic society. Fusing the traditional theatrical principle of “prodesse et delectare” with contemporary cultural politics, these comedians produce something of political relevance: making their audience aware of its conceptions of “self” and “other” and fostering a sense of community across diverse cultural identifications. My thesis builds mainly on the works of Kathrin Bower, Maha El Hissy, Erol Boran, Deniz Göktürk, and Christie Davies. Whereas Davies denies humor’s potential for cultural impact, Göktürk elucidates its destabilizing power in immigrant films. Boran elaborates this function for Turkish-German Kabarett. El Hissy connects Kabarett, film, and theater of polycultural artists and ties them to Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque and the medieval jester. Bower published several essays on the works of ethno-comedians as humorous catalysts for advancing a multiethnic Germany. -

Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

Ringi olemasolu on tähistanud küll valgus - tuslik-demokraatliku iseloomuga, eesrindliku, talurahva huve väljendava ideoloogia tekkimist (Eesti NSV ajalugu 1955: 627), küll radikaalse mõtte- suuna esilekerkimist ühiskondlik-poliitilises elus XIX sajandi esimesel poolel (Strods 1992: 105), küll pärisorjusevastase, 1848. aasta revolutsiooni ideid pooldanud kodanlik-demokraatliku suuna ilmnemist Tartu ülikooli õppe- jõudude hulgas (Tartu ülikooli ajalugu 1982: 86). American Economic Review 2021, 111(2): 1–35 https://doi.org/10.1257/aer.20191137 Leadership in Social Movements: Evidence from the “Forty-Eighters” in the Civil War† By Christian Dippel and Stephan Heblich* This paper studies the role of leaders in the social movement against slavery that culminated in the US Civil War. Our analysis is orga- nized around a natural experiment: leaders of the failed German rev- olution of 1848–1849 were expelled to the United States and became antislavery campaigners who helped mobilize Union Army volun- teers. Towns where Forty-Eighters settled show two-thirds higher Union Army enlistments. Their influence worked through local newspapers and social clubs. Going beyond enlistment decisions, Forty-Eighters reduced their companies’ desertion rate during the war. In the long run, Forty-Eighter towns were more likely to form a local chapter of the NAACP. JEL D74, J15, J45, J61, N31, N41 ( ) Between 1861 and 1865, the United States’ North and South fought each other over the issue of slavery in the American Civil War. One in five adult men, 2.2 mil- lion in the North alone, took up arms to fight in the Union Army. Fighting was costly on both sides. In total, 620,000 men lost their lives, as many as in all other American wars combined Hacker 2011, Costa and Kahn 2003 . At the same time, the finan- ( ) cial incentives to fight in the war were low. Union Army privates earned about $13 per month, less than a farmhand Edmunds 1866 , and payment was irregular. In the ( ) South, there were stronger economic motives at least for some, since the war was about the survival of Southern institutions and property Hall, Huff, and Kuriwaki ( 2019 . -

A concise background of education history describing the movements and influences preceding and involving these leaders is presented in a single chapter before each section. Stefan Zweig Joseph Fouché Bildnis eines politischen Menschen Arthur Schnitzler in liebender Verehrung 2 Vorwort Joseph Fouché, einer der mächtigsten Männer seiner Zeit, einer der merkwürdigsten aller Zeiten, hat wenig Liebe gefunden bei seiner Mitwelt und noch weniger Gerechtigkeit bei der Nachwelt. Napoleon auf St. Helena, Robespierre bei den Jakobinern, Carnot, Barras, Talleyrand in ihren Memoiren, allen französischen Geschichtsschreibern, ob royalistisch, republikanisch oder bonapartistisch, läuft sofort Galle in die Feder, sobald sie nur seinen Namen hinschreiben. Geborener Verräter, armseliger Intrigant, glatte Reptiliennatur, gewerbsmäßiger Überläufer, niedrige Polizeiseele, erbärmlicher Immoralist – kein verächtliches Schimpfwort wird an ihm gespart, und weder Lamartine noch Michelet noch Louis Blanc versuchen ernstlich, seinem Charakter oder vielmehr seiner bewunderswert beharrlichen Charakterlosigkeit nachzuspüren. Zum erstenmal erscheint seine Gestalt in wirklichem Lebensumriß in jener monumentalen Biographie Louis Madelins (der diese wie jede andere Studie den Großteil ihres Tatsachenmaterials verdankt); sonst hat die Geschichte einen Mann, der innerhalb einer Weltwende alle Parteien geführt und als einziger sie überdauert, der im psychologischen Zweikampf einen Napoleon und einen Robespierre besiegte, ganz still in die rückwärtige Reihe der unbeträchtlichen Figuranten abgeschoben. Ab und zu geistert seine Gestalt noch durch ein Napoleonstück oder eine Napoleonoperette, aber dann meist in der abgegriffenen schematischen Charge des gerissenen Polizeiministers, eines vorausgeahnten Sherlock Holmes; flache Darstellung verwechselt ja immer eine Rolle des Hintergrunds mit einer Nebenrolle. Ein einziger hat diese einzigartige Figur groß gesehen aus seiner eigenen Größe, und zwar nicht der Geringste: Balzac. Dieser hohe und gleichzeitig durchdringende Geist, der nicht nur auf die Schaufläche der Zeit, sondern immer auch hinter die Kulissen blickte, hat rückhaltlos Fouché als den psychologisch interessantesten Charakter seines Jahrhunderts erkannt. -

Ein Europäer in Berlin Als Georg Brandes im Juni 1914 nach New York kam, mußte die Polizei Tau sende von Menschen zerstreuen, für die in dem Theatersaal, in dem der däni• sche Kritiker seine Vorlesung über William Shakespeare hielt, kein Platz war. 1 Brandes wurde gehört, in der Alten wie in der Neuen Welt. In Skandi navien aber wurde er mehr als gehört, er wurde ein Begriff, fast mythisch: der unchristlich rastlose Intellektuelle, der Aufklärer selbst. Auch in unserem Jahrzehnt erscheinen seine Schriften in Dänemark. 1986 trafen sich einige hundert Philologen aus der ganzen Welt in Göteborg mit Brandes als Thema. Vor ein paarJahrenveröffentlichte ein führender schwedischer Literaturkriti ker einen Roman, in dem ein fiktiver Georg Brandes in einem heutigen Kon text die Hauptrolle spielt. Eine englischsprachige Einführung in die aktuelle Forschung um Georg Brandes erschien 1980 unter dem treffenden Titel The Activist Critic. 2 In Deutschland war es nicht anders. In der Kaiserzeit wurde er als der ohne Zweifel bedeutendste Kritiker der Epoche betrachtet. In der heutigen deutschen Wirklichkeit aber und in der heutigen deutschen Literaturge schichte ist Georg Brandes ein vergessener Mann. -
