North-east India: a report on the birds seen during a trip to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from 31 March till 15 April 2018 Blue-naped Pitta at Koklabari Agriculture Farm, photographed by Pablo Vercruysse © 2018 Leader: David Van den Schoor Participants: Rudy Lenaerts, Pablo Vercruysse, Herwig Blockx and Paul De Cnodder INTRODUCTION After an exploration trip last year, this was Starling's first tour to Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, which, though discovered only recently, has proved very popular among the more adventurous of the birding community. Combined with nearby areas in western Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, in India’s remote northeast corner, it offers a fantastic range of special birds. Despite some windy and wet weather on occasions, we had fair weather for most of our trip, enabling us to enjoy the birding. Altogether, we recorded a total of 450 species, during our 14 days but as always, it is quality, not quantity that impressed us most. Birding highlights of this wonderful tour included a male Blyth’s Tragopan, which we saw quite well, Himalayan Monals, tame and noisy Snow Partridges, displaying Bengal Floricans, walk away views on a fantastic male Blue-naped Pitta, several amazing Ward’s Trogons, excellent views on both males and females Rufous-necked Hornbills, close-up views on many grassland specialities like Indian and Bristled Grassbirds, Black-breasted Parrotbills, Jerdon’s Babbler and Finn’s Weavers. Five of the rare White-winged Duck at Nameri, great views of Spotted Elachuras, Long-billed and Bar-winged Wren- babblers, male and female Fire-tailed Mysornis and a large gathering of Greater Adjutants at their home dump. Amongst this species recorded there were many other memorable birds: sight observations of Swamp Francolins, four species of vultures, three species of harriers, many Pallas’s Fish Eagles, a pair of Black-tailed Crakes, Solitary Snipe, a confiding Long-billed Plover, Snow Pigeons, Brown Fish Owls, Dusky eagle Owls, Blyth’s swifts at their nestholes, several beautiful Great Hornbills, Pale-headed Woodpeckers, a nice Collared Treepie, single Fire-capped Tits, singing Pale-footed Bush Warblers at Manas, Slender-billed Scimitar Babblers, Spotted, Scaly and Blue-winged Laughingthrushes, Himalayan Cutia’s, Slaty-blue, Ultramarine, Sapphire and the scare Ferruginous Flycatcher, Tickell’s, Alpine and Scaly Thrushes, Brown-throated Fulvetta’s, Grey-headed and White-breasted Parrotbills, Yellow-vented, and Broad-billed Warblers, Rufous-fronted Tit, Fire-tailed Sunbird (and six other sunbirds), Red-headed and Grey-headed Bullfinches, Dark-breasted, Dark-rumped, Red-fronted and Himalayan White-browed Rosefinches, Collared Grosbeak, Scarlet and Gold-naped Finches, good numbers of Tibetan Serins and Yellow-breasted Greenfinches. We also saw a number of exciting mammals on this tour, including Asian Elephants, Gaurs, Indian Rhinoceros, Bengal Tiger, Indian Boars, Wild Water Buffalo, Swamp, Musc and Hog Deers, Smooth Indian Otters, Himalayan Yellow-throated Martin, and Paul was very lucky to spot the extremely rare Pygmy Hog around our lodge in Manas NP at night. Taken together, this was a very successful trip, with many exciting and amusing memories.
