Sikon Wright State University WWE: Redefining Working-Class Womanhood 2 Introduction World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world (Bajaj & Banerjee, 2016). Their programs air in 20 languages in over 180 countries, and in the United States approximately 11 million people watch their programs each week (“FAQ,” n.d.). These programs include six hours of televised weekly events and 16 annual pay- per-view events (“WWE Reports,” 2017). In the first quarter of 2017 the company grossed $188.4 million (“WWE Reports,” 2017). They have close ties with the current presidential administration, as Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon was the CEO of the company from 1980 to 2009 (Reuters, 2009) and President Trump has made several appearances on WWE programming in the past (“Donald Trump,” n.d.). -

Top Stories: We unfortunately have some heartbreaking news to start what is the biggest week of the year for pro wrestling, as 32 year-old British wrestler Kris Travis tragically passed away after an 18 month battle with stomach cancer on 31/3. Travis was diagnosed with the disease in October 2014 and had to pull out of the second season of TNA British Bootcamp because of the diagnosis. In 2015 he underwent surgery to remove a tumour and a part of his stomach then went through 18 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, which appeared to put him on the road to recovery. Travis defied all doctors expectations and returned to the ring at a Preston City Wrestling show on August 7th 2015. -

releases in the transition period. Revenues from our videogame release in 2006 was reported in 2007. Licensing cost of revenue consists primarily of talent royalties and agent commissions paid to our licensing agents. The licensing profit contribution margin was 74% in both the eight month 2006 transition period and the twelve month fiscal 2006 period. In July 2006, we began publishing a new magazine titled WWE Magazine that replaced our two former magazines, Raw and SmackDown. Including magazine special issues, we published sixteen issues in the 2006 transition period as compared to thirty-two issues in fiscal 2006. The magazine publishing profit contribution margin was 20% in the eight month transition period as compared to 38% in the twelve month fiscal 2006 period. The decline in the profit contribution margin reflects our increased editorial and content costs associated with producing our new WWE Magazine. Home video revenue reflects the sale of approximately 3.3 million gross DVD units in the 2006 transition period as compared to 2.9 million gross units in fiscal 2006. Included in the successful titles released in the 2006 transition period was WrestleMania XXII, which shipped approximately 425,000 gross units, representing our largest selling DVD release in our history. The increase in home video costs is primarily due to the increased volume of home video sales in the transition period, reflecting higher duplication and distribution fees. The home video profit contribution margin was 50% in the 2006 transition period as compared to 56% in fiscal 2006, reflecting a decline in the sell- through percentage in the transition period. -

year ago, inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, we published the Ainaugural Cubed Circle Yearbook, attempting to encapsulate what was a pivotal year for professional wrestling in 2014. This year we hope to do the same, albeit for a year of a decidedly different sort. 2015 was dissimilar to 2014 in many respects. It didn't see moments as grandiose as the end of the Undertaker's Streak, Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania victory, or the Guerrero-Atlantis mask match. When evaluated from afar 2015 may even appear stagnant in comparison, as did many of the world's largest and most influential promotions during the year – WWE, NJPW, and CMLL in particular. But, upon closer inspection, the seemingly motionless landscape of 2015 wasn't only very much alive, but both morose and vibrant, disheartening and emboldening. The open wrestling fan of 2015 had more choice and freedom than perhaps ever before, with some ardent observers of the industry even abandoning Monday Night RAW for lack of faith in the lumbering weekly juggernaut. Some turned to Lucha Underground, a show that garnered considerable cult popularity. Others looked to alternative facets of the company such as NXT, which grew beyond what many considered its zenith at the end of 2014, harbouring one of the better years for American women's wrestling in decades. AAA showed promise and ambition on several fronts, but was subject to unfortunate, and at times tragic, circumstances. NJPW was as repetitive creatively as it had been under the Kidani administration, but produced one of the best nights of wrestling of the last several years in WrestleKingdom 9 – made more readily available to an American audience than ever before.
