1 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Nine months has passed since the AGM when I was given the honour of becoming chairman of our club. Not only have I learnt a lot from taking on this role but it has also given me a tremendous insight into the challenges that face clubs like ours into the future.

It is fair to say that most clubs tend to plan on a year by year basis and it has been no different for us here at Fitzroy Doncaster. This is one area we need to change. It is imperative that we develop a 3 – 5 year strategic plan that will define our direction, purpose and goals. The real benefit here is for the succession planning of Fitzroy Doncaster and assist in the development of position descriptions for as many of the roles within our club as possible.

Our aim for Fitzroy Doncaster is to be successful – both on and off the field.

Success can be measured in many ways and not just limited to:

 Premierships  Players representing at a higher level  Financial  Our cricket structure  Off field involvement – volunteers and administration  Development of cricket in our zone

As chairman, it is my role to review the 2009/2010 season in every aspect and report at our 2010 AGM as to what has worked and where we need to improve and change.

Our financial position has improved for the second year in a row with a profit in excess of $7,000.00.

It was great to see Fitzroy Doncaster finish fifth in the Club Championship, one spot up from the previous season. I’m sure you’d agree that having three teams still chasing a finals position in the last round gave everyone around the club a great buzz.

For the seconds and thirds to make the finals – and for the thirds, the second year in a row is commendable. After a terrific first week of the finals, the semi final round was disappointing; however, this should be the stimulus for 2010/2011 to drive us all to go one more week in March. Our first’s and fourth’s should also be using 2009/2010 as incentive to go one step better next season.

Thank you to each of the players who captained sides this year; Peter Dickson, James Court, Scott Huntley, Steve Wotherspoon and Phil Lovell for their efforts in leading the teams.

To Andrew Walton for his untiring effort in helping structure our club for a successful future – thank you for the time you have put into our players and for Fitzroy Doncaster. Equally we should be thankful of having Ash Cavigan and Phil Lovell as his able assistants.

Congratulations to:

Lloyd Mash and Glenn Maxwell for their selection for Victoria Peter Dickson for being named in the Premier Cricket team of the year. Kyle Humphries for his award of being the best player in the third XI. on winning the 1stXI premiership. on winning the Club Championship. Graeme Rummans for winning the Ryder Medal.

Our volunteers are crucial to our club’s ongoing success and viability; and as with most Premier clubs suffering from the same challenges, too few doing too much. To Graeme, Ilva, Mitch, Graeme Cook, Greg Vardi, Greg Heatley, Sue Dickson, Gwen McKenzie and all the other parents and friends of the club who 2 have assisted during the season – a heartfelt thanks and you should be aware that your value to the club is immeasurable. To Sam Goodchap for his running of the scoreboard and his role as net captain. If I have missed anyone please accept my apologies.

Our Committees – the General Committee, Cricket Committee and Golden Lions are certainly being and are going to be revamped as we are able to recruit key skills to deliver our strategy. Thank you to all the committee members for their time particularly Jeff Harvey coming back to head up the cricket committee and Mitch for taking over the reins of the Golden Lions.

Thank you to our sponsors for their financial assistance:

Doncaster East and Templestowe Community Bank The Manningham Club Top Line Indoor Sports Hazelwood Hill Austbrokers Countrywide Rinnai Peter McKenzie Caravans And all the other contributors and player sponsors

To Maurie Turner a huge thank you for your friendship and advice on how things work within a Premier club and for the time you put into your role.

I look forward to seeing you all during the 2010-2011 season.

Tim Considine Chairman

3 ADMINISTRATION MANAGER'S REPORT

This past season was again successful both financially and on the field.

The financial success of our Club would not be possible without the continued support and contribution by our sponsors. We thank again the Doncaster East and Templestowe Community Bank (formally Doncaster East Community Bank), Austbrokers Countrywide, Manningham Club and Rinnai.

In addition to the above we must also thank Burdens Plumbing (Victoria) Pty Ltd, D & K Home Security Pty Ltd, Hazelwood & Hill Pty Ltd and Topline Sports for their generosity as new sponsors. We welcome the opportunity to continue the development of these relationships.

We thank the player sponsors for their support and the encouragement they give our players.

Congratulations to all our players for their performances and achievements throughout the season.

I wish to thank those persons who assisted around the Club on training nights and match days with the BBQ’s, scoring and drinks plus all the odd jobs that have to be done to make any club successful on and off the field. A special thank you to Ilva and Graeme Woolard for their hours around the club on game days, your time was very much appreciated.

Our main oval was, until the Christmas break, the worst in the Premier competition but with thanks to the council and the efforts of the curator, David Blackley, the ground was improving each week. With the rain and easing of water restrictions it hopeful that we commence next season with better prepared practice wickets and grounds. I am confident that David will do his utmost to ensure that is the case.

Good luck for an even better season in 2010/11

Maurie Turner Administration Manager

13 COACH’S REPORT

Overall it could be stated that as a playing group and a club we were able to continue the improvements delivered in 08/09. However with the 1st XI failing narrowly to make the finals we learnt firsthand the harsh reality that when converted from the “hunter” to the “hunted” – any deviation from proper preparation and failing to behave as a unified team, creates cracks that are able to be exploited.

The 1st XI (T20), 2nd XI and 3rd XI (Home & Away) all achieved a final position in the semi final rounds to give further experience to the playing group in a pressure environment. Our collective aim to continue finals involvement was achieved, now we have a base of substance to begin planning with courage. Consecutive finish in fifth position for the Club Championship and the experience of all players entering the final round of the season with something to play for, further evidence of consistency.

For the quality in conditions, adopting a disciplined and practical approach to ground management that made available an extremely high standard of wicket and ground surfaces – David Blackley the effort was exceptional.

Thanks to all of the players involved in captaincy during the season – Dickson, Court, Huntley, Sheehan, Wotherspoon, Heatley and Lovell. 17 1st ELEVEN REPORT

After the disappointment of losing the semi final the previous season, the Lions were keen to start the season well and after two rounds had impressive wins over Geelong and Northcote. Both these wins were highlighted by inspiring centuries from Lloyd Mash and Matthew Bremner. Unfortunately after such a good start we lost some important games against good opposition in Melbourne and Prahran and had a wash out against Ringwood. This left Fitzroy two wins, two losses and a draw coming into the two day fixture.

Fitzroy’s first two day game was against the Bombers where we were comprehensively outplayed with both bat and ball, handing Essendon the win on a very good batting wicket. Coming up against Richmond things did not improve as we had a very poor day on the field and were left chasing three hundred plus. Our batting was once again inconsistent and we failed to get any points out of the contest. Despite some good individual performances we were not combining as a team and not achieving contributions from the whole group. It was obvious that some of our talented younger players were finding things more difficult in their second season as clubs had knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses.

With three games left before the Christmas break, we began to build some strong momentum with wins against Footscray, Camberwell and Hawthorn. Some good performances by Ben Waterman, Lloyd Mash, Peter Dickson, Glenn Maxwell and Matt Bremner all helped towards gaining the points and leaving the team on the fringe of the eight at a break.

With the well awaited country round upon us we travelled to Maroopna and had a very good win in forty plus weather conditions. Lloyd Mash making a hundred with solid contributions from all players we were slowly starting to work our way back into the top eight of the competition.

With one day cricket now finished we headed to Frankston. The strong bowling attack of Frankston exploited our top order and eventually bowled us out for 81 in an extremely poor batting display. Frankston passed us easily and went on to take the points. In this particular game we showed very little application and needed more from our inexperienced but talented batting group.

With the John Scholes trophy up for grabs, the Lions came out and played with a passion and endeavour which we had lacked at times. We had a convincing win against the Blues and only just fell short from outright points. All players played an important role in a very good team win and regaining the Scholes trophy back to its home.

This was to be our last win as rain played a large part in the next two games with a loss against St Kilda in very trying conditions week one, and after a very good batting display against Dandenong we were rained off. Needing a result in the final round against Dandenong it meant our season was over. Despite luck not falling our way late in the season we had let too many winnable opportunities slip in earlier games eventually costing us a finals birth.

After a year of highs and lows some positives to come out of the year was the depth of youth coming through. Young players such as Matt Vardi and Jake Sherriff making their 1st XI debuts showed they have long careers ahead of them. Matthew Bremner stepped up to become a senior player and again Lloyd Mash and Ben Waterman having stellar seasons. Glenn Maxwell and Lloyd Mash should also be congratulated for representing Victoria.

I would also like to thank Andrew Walton and Ash Cavigan for their help and support throughout the season and the cricket Committee which is currently a work in progress but will be a positive influence on the playing group in the years to come.

Look forward to seeing everyone next season with the goal of playing finals and having a successful year.

22 2nd ELEVEN REPORT

The 2nd X1 had an up and down season but overall a very positive one highlighted by the impressive development of a number of younger players. To end the season the way we did against Geelong (eventual premiers) was disappointing but there were enough positives to take out of the season overall to provide optimism for coming years.

Ultimately the main role of the 2nd X1 is to develop young cricketers to the point where they are considered for 1st X1 selection. This season the 2nd X1 provided two debutants to the 1st X1 in Jake Sherriff and Nat Vardi. These boys deserved their promotions as a result of some outstanding performances. Hopefully these two players and a number of other promising young lions can push for 1st X1 games next season and develop into consistent 1st X1 cricketers.

I’d personally like to thank all members of the 2nd X1 this year for the way they approached their cricket. We played cricket in a very positive manner all season and I believe that has a part to play for some of the performances over the year. I’d like to congratulate Darren Kimberley on his bowling award and Fletcher Stewart on his award for the 2nd X1 player of the season. I’d like to thank Les Allan for all of his support over the season and for his great work with the scorebook. The team really do appreciate your work Les.

I believe that there is the potential for the 2nd X1 to provide a number of 1st X1 cricketers over the next few years. Potential only get’s you so far and it will take a lot of work and dedication for that to translate into consistently excellent performances. I look forward to the development of our young group over the coming seasons.

25 3rd ELEVEN REPORT

It was great to be a part of a successful 3rd XI for a second successive year. This year we managed to win a final which was something we failed to do in the previous year. Given we were the top side left in the second week of finals it could have been a lot different.

We started off slowly in 2009/10 losing the first two matches of the season although from the outside it may have seemed we were struggling, we managed to scrape out a couple of wins and become a team that became clinical in defeating teams at the end of the season.

Our standout wins of the season were against Essendon where we had an outright result, the first in 3rd XI for a long time. In addition to this we managed to chase 180 from 28 overs which at the time may have seemed an unlikely achievement.

Also the defeat of Carlton was also special as we managed to put 7/340 on the board due to an outstanding maiden club century to Michael Sanderson.

The quarter final defeat of Melbourne Uni was also a great achievement as we managed to successfully execute our game plan and make 310 and knock over Melbourne Uni for just over 100. The game was also special as Darren Motschall was able to record his maiden FDCC century scoring a blistering 133 that put the game out of Uni’s reach.

It was great to see the development of young players this season as Jack Blyth, Matthew Jackson, Michael Sanderson, Michael Cook, Chris Barry, Matthew Bright and Kyle Humphrys all made their 3rd XI debuts and managed to hold down spots in our finals team.

Kyle Humphrys also deserves special mention as he won the 3rd XI player of the season award. Kyle developed a cult following around the club for his ability to score at a rapid rate. Having Kyle in the team enabled the 3rd XI to chase down totals that would normally have been unattainable. Memorable innings that Kyle played this year included his 111 before tea against Footscray and his 90 off 70 balls which included 5 massive sixes against St.Kilda which enabled us to chase down and an unlikely target.

I would personally like to thank Andrew for the opportunity to captain the 3rd XI again.

I would also like to thank Tim for his support, help and advice during the season.

I would also like to thank the parents that helped out during the year.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone that played in the 3rd XI this year. If this group stay together there should be more success in future seasons.

28 4th ELEVEN REPORT

Statistically the 4th XI with five wins in the regular season (Hawthorn/ Monash, Camberwell Magpies, St Kilda, Melbourne and Melbourne University) and two wins in the t20 format (Casey/ South Melbourne and North Melbourne) took a step forward after only three wins in the 2008/ 09 season. The highlight was the victories against St Kilda and Melbourne University both sides played off in the finals and St Kilda went on to be a grand finalist.

The club’s policy on recruiting young players to the Harvey Watts development squad is paying dividends. This season the club introduced another five players from the Development Squad. Players introduced into the club with some success this season included Craig Dancey, Gerrit Oosthuizen, Josh Ingram and Jack Blyth. Craig and Gerrit formed an important part of the middle order in the 4th XI and both players finished with batting aggregates in the top three for this team. Josh was the workhorse with the ball and after a slow start to the season finished strongly. Blyth’s all-round talent with bat, ball and in the field saw him promoted to the 3rd XI early in the season and he went on to play in the 3rd XI finals campaign.

As captain there were many positives to come out of the season and many highlights. Some of the more memorable highlights include:

o The century by Chris Barry in Round 14 against St Kilda. His 113 on a wicket that was not ideal for batting was an innings of pure class and was the catalyst for his promotion to open the batting in the 3rd eleven finals campaign and I look forward to his promotion to higher elevens in the future.

o The breakthrough batting performance for Jayme Gottliebsen. His 78 not out against Camberwell Magpies in round 9 was an innings under high pressure. His maturity in carrying his bat through the day after the lions lost early wickets shows he has the temperament to challenge Mitchell and Cashen in future seasons

o The improvement from Michael Cook. His all round ability against Hawthorn / Monash and Camberwell Magpies was the catalyst for victories and saw him promoted 3rd XI in the second half of the season.

o The performances of Matthew Jackson were very encouraging. As the season has gone on he has developed great control and great variation. In Round 15 his performance which netted 3/35 off 24 overs against Dandenong typified his improvement throughout the season.

I would like to thank Andrew for the opportunity to captain the 4th XI. Graeme Dancey, Graeme Cook, Reiner Oosthuizen for there support off field during games. Lastly to those people involved with managing the pavilion thanks for the great service before and after games.

Long Live the Lions.

Thanks for the Season.

31 HARVEY WATTS DEVELOPMENT SQUAD 2009

The program commenced in June 2009, the 11 week program predominantly held at the Stephenson Centre, Xavier College Kew comprised a 27 man squad. For the first time in a number of seasons the club recruited a slightly older age demographic to participate in the program and bolster the junior talent already playing with the club. Players ranging in ages from 14 to 17 were selected from the Ringwood District Cricket Association, Ferntree Gully Cricket Association, Diamond Valley Cricket Association, Box Hill Reporter Cricket Association and the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association. The squad also comprised two representatives from Xavier College.

Covering all aspects of the game in the program proved a challenge, but I had great support from the senior playing group. In particular I would like to thank Glen Maxwell, Peter Dickson, Jaques Augustine, Dale Campbell, James Considine, Daniel Vardi, Brendan Joyce, Ben Waterman, Andrew Walton, Nat Vardi and Gavin Kellar for their support during the sessions. Further thanks go to the parents who transported the players to each of the sessions.

This year the program was well received by all players and relatively successful from the club's development philosophy. With the program yielding five new players for the existing playing list and a further three players having already represented the club our depth in the junior ranks and lower grades has significantly benefited as result of the 2009/10 program.

I would like further to thank Tim Considine and his board for the support of the program and look forward to further success in the future.

33 Golden Lions Annual Report

Firstly, the Golden Lions Coterie acknowledges the work of Peter Dickson and Andrew Walton in their respective roles during the past season.

We also congratulate all 2009-10 club award winners

As a number of the committee sought to scale down their involvement in Golden Lions, the past season was a transitional year in which the new members of the committee familiarized themselves of their responsibilities.

I would like to thank Denis De Lacy and Ralston Wood for their contribution over many years for without these gentlemen the organization would not have had the success as a coterie group in its continued support of the cricket club.

Some changes were implemented during the year (eg a change of function nights) to encourage a greater involvement by parents and past players and to incorporate more players into the system. This did however meet with mixed reaction and results.

There is still much to do and the challenge of the Golden Lions now is to move forward and be relevant and to that end I would invite any member of the club who would like to assist in organizing Golden Lions functions or has a fundraising idea to please put their hand up.

I am happy to report that although small in number is, the Golden Lions was able to support the Club in such a strong and meaningful way, to the tune of $10,000.00. (That’s a lot of cricket balls).
