CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The year 2007/2008 will be remembered as another of change, where the season went back to the old format, with the exception of the final eight and not the final six. Cricket Victoria as a part of its five year plan is striving to achieve what is best for Administrators, Players, but in particular the game, and so it is fair to assume that we continue to see changes.

We congratulate for winning the 1st X1 premiership. We also extend congratulations to Essendon Cricket Club and University Cricket Club for their lower X1 premierships. Congratulations are also extended to own 2nd X1 for its success in defeating Geelong and winning the premiership. The players that represented our club in that Grand Final are in a position to either do it again or be promoted to the 1st X1 next season.

It is important to acknowledge the success of Fletcher Stewart in winning the best and fairest for Premier Cricket’s 3rd X1.

The club extends best wishes to Chris Reidy upon his retirement and trusts that he derived enormous satisfaction in completing his tenure as club coach and of the 2nd X1 premiership side, and that he gets much satisfaction watching the career development of his players.

The Board wishes to announce that Chris’s replacement as Coach will be Andrew Walton. Andrew has been appointed for the next 2 years. We welcome Andrew and his partner Carolyn Darke. We trust their stay with us will be long and fruitful.

This past season has yet been another difficult one due to drought conditions, and again our curator David Blakely has made the most of these conditions. David presented us with one of the best tables in premier cricket, but unfortunately the outfield suffered greatly. If we ever get back to normal conditions, David’s ability as curator will truly be shown. We again thank him for his dedicated efforts in what was a difficult year from a personal point of view, and we at Fitzroy Doncaster send condolences on the sad loss of his brother, Mark.

We turn our attention to Manningham Council for their continued support shown to our club.

To all people responsible for putting our Twenty/20 home game together are to be congratulated on behalf of the entire club. While we did not play any bigger part than our round robin games, our home game against Dandenong represented a financial windfall of many thousands of dollars. This in no small way was due to the efforts of Tim Considine. We look forward to again presenting somewhat of a gala night, not only for supporters, but for the local community as well.

I extend my thanks to the Golden Lions Coterie for another outstanding year of support.

To Paul Thompson and his board of the Doncaster East Community Bank we thank you for what was another good year of our association. The past year saw some of our young men open accounts at the branch, for many it was their first experience in banking and whilst we cannot be their financial advisors that surely has to be a benefit to both parties. We trust our association just keeps getting better.

To Nicks Wine Merchants, your service to our club was exceptional and we trust that our continued support for one another can carry on.

The Manningham Club sponsored our Twenty/20 uniform and that was their first venture with us. We have a view that as this format of the game becomes more and more prominent, the exposure of these shirts in the local press will proudly demonstrate their involvement with us.

Rinnai, through the efforts of David Dickson, were again prominent with their support, we thank them.

1

Budget Rent-a-car retained their sponsorship with our club and appreciation is extended to them as well.

To Leigh Moyle, Director of Overton Insurance, thank you for your continued support, and we wish you every success in semi retirement.

Financially the club continues to remain stable and our efforts to trade viably will continue. It must be pointed out, to players in particular, that it cost the club on average $1,000 per player to maintain our club for last season. Senior’s fees for last season was some $360 and Juniors some $270. We do not have to be too clever to work out that when you have around 60 players, there is an enormous short fall. The club cannot afford to be benevolent and a more vigorous effort will be made to have fees paid far earlier than in previous years.

Finally, my thanks is extended to the Board for their continued support. To Maurie Turner in particular, your continued guidance in most matters is invaluable.

To all parents that helped make our club friendly with their efforts whatever they maybe, thank you. To Glenda Mash and my wife Margaret for their help, not only on Thursday nights, but weekends as well, I thank you for a mighty effort.

In closing, thoughts turn to David Warry recovering from a stroke, also at the time of writing this report it has been conveyed to us that former Secretary, Kevin Kearney is seriously ill in a Geelong Hospital also recovering from a stroke. Our thoughts go out to their families and trust a speedy recovery is imminent.

ADMINISTRATION MANAGER'S REPORT

Water restrictions continued from last season and as a consequence we were unable to water the outfield or practice . However curator David Blackley managed to produce wickets not only for our games but Dowling, VMCU U21 Final, Country Week and the Australian U17’s. Thank you David and to those who assisted with the grounds whilst David was caring for his ill brother, Mark.

It was a disappointing season for the first XI and a mixed season for the 3rd and 4th XI sides, however the 2nd XI had an excellent season finishing 2nd after the home and away games then beating Geelong in the final to win the 2nd XI Premiership flag. Congratulations to all who were part of that team.

Our appreciation of support is again extended to our major Sponsors. The Doncaster East Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank has supported us now for the past three years and it was a pleasure to be associated with the Manningham Club for the first time. A special thank you must go to Leigh Moyle and Overton Insurance Brokers for their support over the years. Rinnai is also a three year sponsor and we thank them for their continued support.

Insurance was the theme of our game played at Schramm’s. The success of that day is with the thanks to Countrywide Tolstrup Insurance and Overton Insurance Brokers who were the major sponsors of the day with great support from Allianz, CGU, QBE, Vero and Zurich Insurance companies

We have all gained from our association with the major sponsors and welcome the opportunity to be associated with them for many years into the future. We ask that our members and avid followers continue to support our sponsors at every opportunity.

Golden Lion Coterie. What can I say? They have contributed in excess of $250,000.00 to the Club in just twenty two years. What a magnificent effort by the Committee and members of Golden Lions in raising those funds. Thanks to all concerned.

The Golden Lions’ efforts assist us in maintaining player membership fees at reasonable and affordable levels. So please support and promote Golden Lions as they are always looking for new members.

The strategies set by the Board last year has assisted greatly in the financial turnaround and enabled the Club to make on operating profit in excess of four thousand dollars.

I extend my congratulations to all the trophy winners, to the excellent individual performances throughout the year, the players who made their debut in the 1st XI and to the new young players from the Harvey Watts Development squad who played their first games in the Premier Competition with Fitzroy Doncaster.

Congratulations to Peter Dickson on winning the Arthur Liddicut Medal for the third successive year. Mark Ridgway is the only other player to achieve this feat since the inception of the Medal in 1972-73. He also joins Leigh and Rod Watts who both received the award on three occasions. Can he join Gary Watts who won the prestigious award for seven of his many years with the Club?

3

To our volunteers (as few as you are) thank you, to the Coaches, Scorers, the hard working Scoreboard attendants I also thank you for your time and effort throughout the year. Opportunities do exist for even more volunteers next year.

I thank the members of the Board for their support throughout the year.

May next year give us better results.

Maurie Turner Administration Manager

1st ELEVEN REPORT

After two seasons which saw us come runner up and play in another final series, 2007/08 was a major disappointment to say the least. Rather than say what went wrong, I would rather say what went right?

Not making any excuses for our poor performance, our season never got going with injuries to key players early in the season and a sheer lack of confidence within the group being major factors contributing to our ladder position.

After recruiting First-Class cricketer Brad Knowles from Camberwell and talented players such as Glen Maxwell (Richmond) & Michael Shaw (ACT) our depth was increased. We are a talented group with lots of potential match winners, but our execution of basic skills hurt us all season. Apart from Peter Dickson it was evident that opposition sides exposed our batting depth.

There were very few highlights in the 1st XI this season, notable mentions include: • Dirk Nannes representing Victoria in 3 forms of Cricket. • Peter Dickson & Jon Fagg Vic 2nd XI representatives yet again. • Debutants Hrovatin, Campbell, Shaw, Maxwell, Knowles & McCormack. • Reverse outright win against Carlton CC (winning back the John Scholes Trophy).

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2nd XI on there achievement of winning a premiership. The players involved have created a special bond with each other and will hopefully be part of winning back confidence within the playing group.

Many thanks should go to the following people(s): • Roger Page • Don Patrick • Dennis Simms & Geoff Bowyer • Sam on the scoreboard • Ron Kelly and the Board • All our volunteers • The Golden Lions • Supporters, Family and Friends

Also to outgoing coach Chris Reidy, thank you so much for your support over the past two season as senior coach. I wish you and your family all the best in the future.

Finally to the players, we need to accept responsibility and take ownership of our future. Hard work, commitment and communication will be the key to our success moving forward.

2nd ELEVEN REPORT

First of all, the season would have not taken place if it wasn’t for the terrific support staff that we are lucky enough to have at FDCC. To Ron, Maurie, Glenda, Marg, Graham and Donny, thank you for all your hard work behind the scenes that make this the terrific club it is.

The 2nd XI had a fantastic year on the field that resulted in a premiership, with all members throughout the year playing a pivotal role in the side.

It started off with a fantastic 1 day win over Footscray Edgewater, with Mark Winton setting the tone for the year with his precision line and length bowling and fitness in the field which he had worked on through the off season.

An inconsistent start to the season with a Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss ratio, we were brought back down to earth in two games; the unbeaten, top of the ladder Melbourne University who showed us the standard it takes to be on top and the classier Carlton.

Chris Reidy’s leadership showed with the bat against Carlton, the only player to pass the half century with a solid 74 which saved us from outright loss.

Greg Munro proved his critics wrong, showing his talent with a brilliant 101 against St Kilda.

In a losing team, Matthew Hunter kick started his season by knocking up his first century for the year, 101, a stand out when everyone around him failed to fire.

It is from this point the 2nd XI grew together, bonded and showed the rest of the club how to go about their cricket. The highlights came thick and fast, with terrific team performances and outstanding personal games.

One of the highlights of the year was the comeback against North Melbourne at Arden Street, needing 30 runs to win with no wickets in hand, Nathan Hrovatin and Tom McQuinn guided us home to victory with some very nail bighting shot selections and interesting running between the wickets.

Kris Bardon had a terrific game with the gloves in a reduced one day match against Northcote at Bill Lawry oval, taking 5 catches and 1 run out whilst Greg Munro was the only batsmen in the history of the game to be given out L.B.W after it did not touch a single part of his body.

James Court and Scott Huntley were providing us with solid foundations at the top of the order in each game, setting up the game for us to take with both hands whilst Dale Campbell, Nathan Hrovatin, Nathan Owen and Mark Winton all bowled to team plans which saw us victorious. Other contributors with the ball were Scott Huntley and Matthew Bremner, chipping in when ever we needed them to. This was known as the ball off throughout the year and no doubt it went to Bremner.

If you were lucky enough to be watching the game against Prahran, you would have witnessed one of the most entertaining innings of the year provided by who other than Kris Bardon, smashing them to all parts of Schramms with a blazing 136 .

In the last home and away match of the year, it was no co-incidence that Matthew Hunter was the outstanding contributor. Throughout the year averaging 52.62, he demoralized Richmond in what was definitely a case of you had to be there to believe it, making 203 not out. The team total passed 500 in an outstanding day of cricket.

The quarter final against North Melbourne we had a shaky and nervous start, Matthew Bremner made a handy 125, Nathan Owen contributed with the bat, Dale Campbell was steady as always and Nathan Hrovatin showed he was no hack belting them around the park with his 75.

19

The bowlers once again did the job, North Melbourne threatened early with some gutsy aggressive stroke play but our bowlers pulled it back and bowled them out for a modest total.

Camberwell Magpies came to play, we had no intentions of drawing the match as some in our position would do, with a team effort as it had been all year the Lions posted a score above 300.

A couple of good partnerships started to threaten but the breakthrough always came at the right time.

The Grand Final, the biggest game of the year was played at Melbourne University against a determined and more experienced Geelong outfit. We tried to keep our structures and plans the same, keep it simple, build foundations and bowl to our fields. Sent into bat, James Court and Scott Huntley did what they did all year, set us off to a terrific start, putting on 103 for the first . Court made a solid 40, Huntley made a very valuable 60 while Eric Ghasperides chipped in with 15. As all year, Matt Hunter in a time of need was able to deliver on a very slow outfield scoring 61. His partnership with Kris Bardon (31) of 61 put us in the box seat to win the match. Batting over night, Matthew Bremner (32 n.o) and Mark Winton (9n.o) added some valuable runs and time to make things harder for the Cats.

Our bowlers delivered as they did all year, Nathan Owen terrific with the new ball, snaring 2. Dale Campbell’s line and length took 1 and kept things tight, while Nathan Hrovatin took advantage snaring 4 and Man of The Match Scott Huntley with 3.

It was a very satisfying year, one that had many highlights and fun times with everyone who was involved with the team.

The challenge that faces the 2nd XI now is to go back to back, going from Very good to Great.

3rd ELEVEN REPORT

The 3rd XI’s season was fairly disappointing considering the majority of the group was coming off a Grand Final appearance the year before. However despite the performance of the team, the 3rd XI was still able to produce players that would go on to appear in higher grades. This included 2nd XI debutants Tommy McQuinn and Nat Vardi in their first year at the club, Greg Munro and most notably Andrew McCormack who made his 1st XI debut in Round 17.

This season saw a new approach taken in the leadership of the lower grades where a rotational captaincy policy was introduced. This gave many players the chance to lead the team and gave the group a sense of ownership over their season. Many opposing players and captains commented on this, as they thought it was great idea as the team were self-sufficient and not being ‘baby sat’.

Players to Captain the 3rd XI from the leadership group were. Kenan Alev, Peter Cashen, Andrew McCormack, Greg Munro, Fletcher Stewart and Nat Vardi

Season Review

The season started slowly with only one win coming in the opening 7 rounds, against Camberwell where Greg Munro (98) fell just short of registering a match-winning century. This season opening slump was a difficult period for the boys as we were fielding and bowling well, just failing to put runs on the board with the bat.

Despite falling behind the main group in the race for finals, we were able to string some wins together mid- season to really have a crack at making the 8. This was mainly due to the batsmen posting totals that could be defended by the bowlers who were lead by Ben O’Dowd and Andrew McCormack.

Going into the last few rounds the season was in our hands, however poor fielding against Ringwood and a terrible showing against Melbourne made the last 3 games nothing more than practice matches.

The season result - 5 Wins 1 Draw. Although we finished 15th, it is not an accurate indication of some of the cricket that we played this year. Our form fluctuated too often to give ourselves a chance to be one of the better teams in the competition. A better performance must be delivered by this group next year.

On behalf of all the players I would like to thank Denis Sims who gave his all to the team especially in the later half of the year. Thanks also to David Sharp and Greg Heatley who scored for us on numerous occasions - it was greatly appreciated.

Personally I’ve never enjoyed a cricket season as much as I did this one. Everyone was fantastic and made it a great environment to play in. I would like to thank Peter Cashen and Andrew McCormack for leading the group the way they did this year, they made it easier for every player who walked out on the field.

There is no doubting the talent that is in the lower grades at the moment and every player should be knocking on the door of the 2’s shortly. I hope the boys that played with Macca this year took notice that it is possible to push for higher honours and be noticed.

4th ELEVEN REPORT

When you look back over the year that the 4th XI had, it is a little disappointing that we only won 6 games for the season, given that we were in a strong position at the Christmas break being one game out of finals contention with 5 wins and 6 losses. However the year can also be considered a success because in the three previous seasons the 4th XI had collectively only won 4 games and drew another.

The season had many highlights with wins over Camberwell, Frankston, St Kilda, Casey South Melbourne and Richmond but the most impressive win was against second placed Geelong where we managed to bowl them out for 98 in 20 overs chasing our total of 7/167.

The season had many individual performances which most notably were:

• Daniel Mu’s 5/9 against Carlton • Nat Vardi’s 126 against St. Kilda • Brett Nielson’s 108 against Casey South Melbourne and 145 against Richmond • Jack Brook’s 5/62 on debut against Prahran • Ashwyn Mohandas’ 6/39 against Richmond

The season was also beneficial for the club as Nat Vardi and Andrew McCormack both managed to improve and work their way into the higher grades with Nat playing games in the seconds and Andrew making his debut for the first eleven.

Congratulations to Chris and the second eleven on their premiership win. The way they clinically defeated teams in the finals series was something all cricket teams can learn from.

Personally, I would like to thank Chris and the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to captain the fourth eleven. I would also like to thank Geoff, Dennis and Ron for all their support and help during the season.

To the parents of the players, I would like to say a big thank you for all the tasks you performed during the year, most notably - scoring.

Bring on the new season.

Harvey Watts Development Squad 2007/08

The program commenced on June 5 and Stage 1 ran for 10 weeks at the Melbourne Cricket Centre. Four nets were used with 4 sessions, while all nets were opened up for a fielding night (all lasting 90 minutes). All aspects of cricket were covered.

On September 3, Calum Downie presented his research paper on ‘specific’ fitness for cricket to parents and players at Schramm’s Reserve.

Two development games were played, the first against Casey South Melbourne at Casey Fields (Oct 28) and the second against Hawthorn Monash at Monash (Nov 11). Because of ground conditions, the third game against Melbourne was unable to be played. These development games with the four clubs competing on adjacent grounds were very successful, both from a social and a learning viewpoint.

Thirty eight junior players participated over the year, with fifteen representing Fitzroy Doncaster in the Premier competition fixture. ƒ 9 played U/16 Dowling ƒ 7 played U/15 Hatch ƒ 3 played U/14 CV ƒ 2 played State U/15 in Queensland – Lachlan Johns and Steve Papadopoulos. Steve was named Victorian Player of the series at the U/15 national competition, and has been selected for the Australian U/15 team to tour the West Indies later in the year.

Andrew McCormack and Nathan Hrovatin became the first development players to play First XI cricket.

This Development Program would not be possible without many people contributing:

ƒ Ron Kelly – Chairman ƒ FDCC Board ƒ Coaching Staff - Terry Hahn Level 3 + Inner east U/16 Coach Brendon Foley Level 2 + Asst coach Inner east U/16 Lachlan Wills Level 1 coach Dennis Sims Level 2 + Asst coach FDCC Arthur Marks Level 3 coach Phil Lovell Level 1 + Croydon Sub Dist coach ƒ Administration of the program – Wayne Wills ƒ Maurie Turner FDCC Administration Manager ƒ Rondo Building Supplies ƒ Rohan O’Neil – Cricket Victoria ƒ Tony Judd – Cricket Victoria

The support, both moral and physical, that these people gave, made the program enjoyable and a great learning vehicle for both players and parents.

I thank the parents for the transportation of the players and most importantly, the wives and partners of the Club and staff for their support of this program.

U/18 Development Program

This was the second year that the self-funded development program for the U18’s has operated.

The program enables the over 16's to merge much better into senior cricket. Being a much smaller group, the players were able to work together to improve their basic cricket skills.

31

It was held at the Melbourne Cricket Centre over a 6 week period for one and a half hours per session using two nets.

Participating players were James Sharp, Cameron Sekula, Ashley Jayasinghe, Trent Giffening, Fletcher Stewart, Andrew McCormack, Nathan Hrovatin, Daniel Heatley, Andrew Christie, Brad Mitchell, Matt Bremner and Ben O'Dowd.

Golden Lions Annual Report

Last year after being in a holding pattern following the illness of Big Al, the Golden Lions started to move slowly forward again in 2007/08. Changes have been made and will continue to take place.

For instance, we intend to be more proactive in our efforts to hire professional speakers for our dinners. The success of Bob Skilton has highlighted how champions of yester-year still have a good story to tell.

Golden Lions were proud to be a part of the induction of our clubs latest Life Member, Rod Smith. Rod received many verbal tributes throughout the evening about his service to our club. The dominant theme however, was the way we would all like to remembered, a “Good Bloke who is liked by All “.

This year again saw our fair share of illness to our members, none more serious than friend to all Dave Warry. Dave suffered a serious stroke and has been confronted with his greatest challenge thus far. We wish him well in rehabilitation, and we thank his table friends for their regular updates.

As I write this report a past legend of our club Kevin Kearney is ill in Geelong hospital also suffering a stroke. By now most of you will be aware of Kevin’s condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rada and Kevin’s, family. David Sykes also continues to make slow progress on the road to recovery - our thoughts are also with him.

Our FDCC Board has recently appointed be Andrew Walton. I am pleased to say that in all of my early discussions with Andrew he is totally committed to player involvement at our bi-monthly meetings. This will initially be demonstrated in the month of July.

This is the appropriate forum to officially thank Ralston Wood for all his years as chairman of the Golden Lions. Ralston has declared his intention to stand down and concentrate all efforts to the home front, making sure his good lady Lorna has a speedy recovery to her health issues. Ralston has a view on the way we at the Golden Lions Coterie should be heading but is perfectly aware that this agenda has to be driven by a man of younger years. Ralston will stay on as chairman until a replacement is found but will forever remain a member.

Denis de Lacy has also put his hand up, that he is looking for some support. For some time now we have been taking the contributions of people like Denis for granted. Very few of us are aware of the dedicated work he does.

Our finances at the Golden Lions is beyond reproach, and as we move close to generating some $250,000 in the revenue raising for our club, is it any wonder he needs help? There are many contributing factors that make our Coterie great, none greater than Denis de Lacy’s.

Doug and Audrey Kellalea have been a most welcomed inclusion to the workings of the coterie and thanks is extended for your work. To my wife Margaret again thanks for your efforts.

To Alan Woodford we miss you.

Ron Kelly Secretary
