FITZROY DONCASTER CRICKET CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008 FITZROY DONCASTER CRICKET CLUB INC. OFFICE BEARERS CHAIRMAN Mr R G Kelly DEPUTY CHAIRMAN Mr M Smith TREASURER Mr F Cahill ADMINISTRATION MANAGER Mr M Turner BOARD MEMBERS Mr T Considine. Cricket Victoria Delegates: Messrs. M. Smith, T Considine CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The year 2007/2008 will be remembered as another of change, where the season went back to the old format, with the exception of the final eight and not the final six. Cricket Victoria as a part of its five year plan is striving to achieve what is best for Administrators, Players, but in particular the game, and so it is fair to assume that we continue to see changes. We congratulate Ringwood Cricket Club for winning the 1st X1 premiership. We also extend congratulations to Essendon Cricket Club and Melbourne University Cricket Club for their lower X1 premierships. Congratulations are also extended to own 2nd X1 for its success in defeating Geelong and winning the premiership. The players that represented our club in that Grand Final are in a position to either do it again or be promoted to the 1st X1 next season. It is important to acknowledge the success of Fletcher Stewart in winning the best and fairest for Premier Cricket’s 3rd X1. The club extends best wishes to Chris Reidy upon his retirement and trusts that he derived enormous satisfaction in completing his tenure as club coach and captain of the 2nd X1 premiership side, and that he gets much satisfaction watching the career development of his players. The Board wishes to announce that Chris’s replacement as Coach will be Andrew Walton. Andrew has been appointed for the next 2 years. We welcome Andrew and his partner Carolyn Darke. We trust their stay with us will be long and fruitful. This past season has yet been another difficult one due to drought conditions, and again our curator David Blakely has made the most of these conditions. David presented us with one of the best tables in premier cricket, but unfortunately the outfield suffered greatly. If we ever get back to normal conditions, David’s ability as curator will truly be shown. We again thank him for his dedicated efforts in what was a difficult year from a personal point of view, and we at Fitzroy Doncaster send condolences on the sad loss of his brother, Mark. We turn our attention to Manningham Council for their continued support shown to our club. To all people responsible for putting our Twenty/20 home game together are to be congratulated on behalf of the entire club. While we did not play any bigger part than our round robin games, our home game against Dandenong represented a financial windfall of many thousands of dollars. This in no small way was due to the efforts of Tim Considine. We look forward to again presenting somewhat of a gala night, not only for supporters, but for the local community as well. I extend my thanks to the Golden Lions Coterie for another outstanding year of support. To Paul Thompson and his board of the Doncaster East Community Bank we thank you for what was another good year of our association. The past year saw some of our young men open accounts at the branch, for many it was their first experience in banking and whilst we cannot be their financial advisors that surely has to be a benefit to both parties. We trust our association just keeps getting better. To Nicks Wine Merchants, your service to our club was exceptional and we trust that our continued support for one another can carry on. The Manningham Club sponsored our Twenty/20 uniform and that was their first venture with us. We have a view that as this format of the game becomes more and more prominent, the exposure of these shirts in the local press will proudly demonstrate their involvement with us. Rinnai, through the efforts of David Dickson, were again prominent with their support, we thank them. 1 Budget Rent-a-car retained their sponsorship with our club and appreciation is extended to them as well. To Leigh Moyle, Director of Overton Insurance, thank you for your continued support, and we wish you every success in semi retirement. Financially the club continues to remain stable and our efforts to trade viably will continue. It must be pointed out, to players in particular, that it cost the club on average $1,000 per player to maintain our club for last season. Senior’s fees for last season was some $360 and Juniors some $270. We do not have to be too clever to work out that when you have around 60 players, there is an enormous short fall. The club cannot afford to be benevolent and a more vigorous effort will be made to have fees paid far earlier than in previous years. Finally, my thanks is extended to the Board for their continued support. To Maurie Turner in particular, your continued guidance in most matters is invaluable. To all parents that helped make our club friendly with their efforts whatever they maybe, thank you. To Glenda Mash and my wife Margaret for their help, not only on Thursday nights, but weekends as well, I thank you for a mighty effort. In closing, thoughts turn to David Warry recovering from a stroke, also at the time of writing this report it has been conveyed to us that former Secretary, Kevin Kearney is seriously ill in a Geelong Hospital also recovering from a stroke. Our thoughts go out to their families and trust a speedy recovery is imminent. Ron Kelly Chairman 2 ADMINISTRATION MANAGER'S REPORT Water restrictions continued from last season and as a consequence we were unable to water the outfield or practice wickets. However curator David Blackley managed to produce wickets not only for our games but Dowling, VMCU U21 Final, Country Week and the Australian U17’s. Thank you David and to those who assisted with the grounds whilst David was caring for his ill brother, Mark. It was a disappointing season for the first XI and a mixed season for the 3rd and 4th XI sides, however the 2nd XI had an excellent season finishing 2nd after the home and away games then beating Geelong in the final to win the 2nd XI Premiership flag. Congratulations to all who were part of that team. Our appreciation of support is again extended to our major Sponsors. The Doncaster East Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank has supported us now for the past three years and it was a pleasure to be associated with the Manningham Club for the first time. A special thank you must go to Leigh Moyle and Overton Insurance Brokers for their support over the years. Rinnai is also a three year sponsor and we thank them for their continued support. Insurance was the theme of our Twenty20 game played at Schramm’s. The success of that day is with the thanks to Countrywide Tolstrup Insurance and Overton Insurance Brokers who were the major sponsors of the day with great support from Allianz, CGU, QBE, Vero and Zurich Insurance companies We have all gained from our association with the major sponsors and welcome the opportunity to be associated with them for many years into the future. We ask that our members and avid followers continue to support our sponsors at every opportunity. Golden Lion Coterie. What can I say? They have contributed in excess of $250,000.00 to the Club in just twenty two years. What a magnificent effort by the Committee and members of Golden Lions in raising those funds. Thanks to all concerned. The Golden Lions’ efforts assist us in maintaining player membership fees at reasonable and affordable levels. So please support and promote Golden Lions as they are always looking for new members. The strategies set by the Board last year has assisted greatly in the financial turnaround and enabled the Club to make on operating profit in excess of four thousand dollars. I extend my congratulations to all the trophy winners, to the excellent individual performances throughout the year, the players who made their debut in the 1st XI and to the new young players from the Harvey Watts Development squad who played their first games in the Premier Competition with Fitzroy Doncaster. Congratulations to Peter Dickson on winning the Arthur Liddicut Medal for the third successive year. Mark Ridgway is the only other player to achieve this feat since the inception of the Medal in 1972-73. He also joins Leigh and Rod Watts who both received the award on three occasions. Can he join Gary Watts who won the prestigious award for seven of his many years with the Club? 3 To our volunteers (as few as you are) thank you, to the Coaches, Scorers, the hard working Scoreboard attendants I also thank you for your time and effort throughout the year. Opportunities do exist for even more volunteers next year. I thank the members of the Board for their support throughout the year. May next year give us better results.
