A species list, identification key, short diagnoses and illustrations of all taxa are given. Brief information on known ecological preferences of species is given. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species. -

L. els son' Several works on the order Coleoptera have appeared in recent years, some of them creating new superfamilies, others modifying the constitution of these or creating new families, finally others are genera1 revisions of the order. The authors believe that the current classification of this order, incorporating these changes would prove useful. The following outline is based mainly on Crowson (1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1973) and Crowson and Viedma (1964). For characters used on classification see Viedma (1972) and for family synonyms Abdullah (1969). Major features of this conspectus are the rejection of the two sections of Adephaga (Geadephaga and Hydradephaga), based on Bell (1966) and the new sequence of Heteromera, based mainly on Crowson (1966), with adaptations. -

Biodiversity of New Zealand beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera). Memoirs of the Museum of Victoria 56(2): 659-666. Approximately 5235 species are described for New Zealand, including 354 introduced. They belong to 82 families in two suborders, Adephaga and Polyphaga. The New Zealand beetle fauna is distinguished by the absence of many major lineages, a high level of endem- ism. which in many groups is over 90% at the specific level and over 43% at the generic level (e.g.. Staphylinidae), and the radiation of many groups of genera and species. The origins of New Zealand's beetle fauna are still poorly understood. They are likely to be varied, includ- ing Gondwanan elements and elements which arrived here by short and long-distance dispersal recently and in the remote past. The size of the New Zealand beetle fauna is con- sistent with species number/land area relationships in other areas around the world. 1 CHECKLIST OF BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: INSECTA) OF SASKATCHEWAN R. R. Hooper1 and D. J. Larson2 1 – Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, SK. Deceased. 2 – Box 56, Maple Creek, SK. S0N 1N0 Introduction A checklist of the beetles of Canada (Bousquet 1991) was published 20 years ago in order to provide a list of the species known from Canada and Alaska along with their correct names and a indication of their distribution by major political units (provinces, territories and state). A total of 7447 species and subspecies were recognized in this work. British Columbia and Ontario had the most diverse faunas, 3628 and 3843 taxa respectively, whereas Saskatchewan had a relatively poor fauna (1673 taxa) which was about two thirds that its neighbouring provinces (Alberta – 2464; Manitoba – 2351). This raises the question of whether the Canadian beetle fauna is distributed like a doughnut with a hole in the middle, or is there some other explanation. After assembling available literature records as well as the collection records available to us, we present a list of 2312 species (generally only single subspecies of a species are recognized in the province) suggesting that the Canadian distribution pattern of species is more like that of a Bismark, the dough may be a little thinner in the center but there is also a core of good things. This list was largely R. Hopper’s project. He collected Saskatchewan insects since at least the 1960’s and over the last decade before his death he had compiled a list of the species he had collected along with other records from the literature or given him by other collectors (Hooper 2001). -

VDOT Northern Virginia District Office 4975 Alliance Drive Fairfax, VA 22030 Re: NPS Comments on 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension Project Environmental Assessment Dear Mr. Lerner, The National Park Service (NPS) has reviewed the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension Environmental Assessment (EA), which evaluates an extension of the Interstate 495 (I-495) Express Lanes along approximately three miles of I-495, also referred to as the Capital Beltway, from their current northern terminus in the vicinity of the Old Dominion Drive overpass to the George Washington Memorial Parkway (Parkway) in the McLean area of Fairfax County, Virginia. The purpose of the project is to reduce congestion, provide additional travel choices and improve travel reliability by extending the I-495 Express Lanes from the existing terminus of the I-495 Express Lanes to the Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The proposed improvements entail new and reconfigured express lane ramps and general-purpose lane ramps at the Dulles Interchange and tie-in connections to the Route 123/I-495 interchange. Because of the project’s impacts to the Parkway, the NPS is serving as a cooperating agency on this project and has been coordinating with VDOT and offers the following general comments with detailed comments attached. The Build alternative includes modifications to the I-495/Parkway interchange to allow for express lane access from I-495 to and from the Parkway.
