  • Earles of Dorsetshire
    EARLES OF ENGLAND—DORSETSHIRE 29 CHAPTER FOUR. THE EARLES OF DORSETSHIRE. If we are right in our identification of John Erie, of Ashburton, and our London author is correct in his statements, we shall have plain sailing in giving the genealogy of the Dorsetshire branch. This begins with Walter Erie, of Charborough, and the descent is as fol lows: N—FOURTEENTH GENERATION. CHILDREN OF JOHN ERLE (M 2), OF CULHAMPTON, DEVONSHIRE, d. 1508, son of John Erie (L 2), of Ashburton, d. 1484, and Margaret de Sondes: N 1) JOHN ERLE, of Culhampton, married Thomasine Beare, of County Somerset. 0—FIFTEENTH GENERATION. CHILDREN OF JOHN ERLE (N 1), OF CULHAMPTON, AND THOMASINE BEARE: O 1) WALTER ERLE, of Charborough, County Dorset; d. 1581; married Mary, daughter and co-heir of Richard Wykes, of Binden and Charborough; founder of the Dor setshire branch. A quaint bit of old-time history is here transcribed from Pole's "Collections for Devon:" "Bindon, in Axmouth, was sometime the dwelling of Nicholas Bach, and by him sold in Kinge Henry 4 tyme unto Roger Wike; it contynewed in the famyly, and the last of them, Richard Wike, left it unto his foure daughters, wief of Antony Giffard, Alis (Alice), wief of Hugh Barry, wief of Mark Hays, and Mary, wief of Walter Erie, which bought Giffard's part, and so the moytye (half) is descended unto Sir Walter Earle, sonne of , and Dorothie, his wief, daughter of William Pole, of Shute, Esq. Theire hath the said Sir Walter Erie his howse, with fayre demesnes thereunto belonginge, with the parsonage impropriat." There is a conflict of authorities just here which we are not able to determine.

    f .T . DIC.KINSON, " HENRY ST. JOHN AND THE STRUGGLE FOR THE LEADERSHIP OF THE TORY PAR'.i'Y 1702-14" Volume Two. Chapter Eight. The Emerging Rival to Harley. The supreme political skill and management of Harley had engineered. the ministerial revolution of 1710, but he had not been able to prevent a large and potentially unruly Tory majority in the Commons. Though Harley had the support, if not the absolute allegiance, of many Tory leaders, including Bromley, Rochester, St. John, and Harcourt, there were already those who opposed his trimming policy. The most important of these was the earl of Nottingham, whose integrity and high Church principles commanded widespread respect in the Tory ranks. Kept out of the ministry he appeared a potential rallying point for those Tories disgruntled with Harley's. moderate policy. As early as 28 October 1710 his lieutenant, John Ward, was trying to recruit a party for him and was 1 hoping to enlist Sir Thomas Harmer. The duke of Shrewsbury warned Harley that many other peers, besides Nottingham, were dissatisfied and he listed Argyll, Rivera, Peterborough, Jersey, Fitzwalter, 2 Guernsey, and Haversham. There were soon reports that the 1 Leicester Record Office. Finch bliss. Box vi, bundle 23. Ward to Nottingham, 28 Oct. 1710. 2 H. N. C. Despite all these manifestations of early trouble Harley pressed on with his plans to reduce faction at home and secure peace abroad. The essential prerequisite was to restore financial confidence, a task more 4 difficult than the Tory backbenchers ever realised.

ABSTRACT The thesis deals with the party journalism of the years 1710-1712 as it concerned Marlborough, relating it to its political context and discussing the techniques of controversy employed. The introduction outlines Marlborough's popular status during the earlier years of Anne's reign, the uneasiness aroused by his family's monopoly of royal favour, the growing discontent with the war, despite his repeated victories, and Marlborough's personal reactions to such criticism. The first three chapters concern the issues arising from the ministerial changes and General Election of 1710, measures which many pamphleteers justified by censuring Marlborough's abuse of royal favour and conduct as general and plenipotentiary.

  • A Royal Descent;
    A ROYAL DESCENT; WITH OTHER PEDIGREES AND MEMORIALS. COMPILED BY THOMASIN ELIZABETH SHARPE. LONDON MITCHELL AN'D HUGHES, PRINTERS, 24 W ARDOUR STREET, W 1875. A ROYAL DESCENT; WITH OTHER PEDIGREES AND MEMORIALS. PREF.A.CE. rrHE authorities for the following Pedigrees are indicated in the body of thP work as occasion arises. To economise space, Wills have not been ,transcribed, nor even abstracts of them generally given; they have been quoted so far only as was necessary for proving the genealogies, but exact references have in all cases been annexed, so that the original documents can be found and consulted without any difficulty. The object of the writer has been to collect mto one volume all the di1-eat descents, in both male and female lines, of every member and branch of her own family, as a book of genealogical reference for their use ; and to put upon record all the evidence necessary for proving these descents. Collateral lines have been left aside unnoticed, except in the case of families not hitherto treated by Genealogists, or respecting which the writer believed herself to have original, or at least unprinted information. Thes~ Pedigrees, therefore, do not profess to be exhaustive, but merely direct from the remotest ancestor authentically attainable to each m turn of the nine families and persons who are named and numbered at the foot of the tabular Pedigree, page x. An arrangement in four parts has been adopted as the most convement for the purpose. Part, I. consists of a Royal descent (complete m itself) of the above-mentioned nine famihes and persons.
