Sponsor Funding for encoding this finding aid was partially provided through a grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities Biographical Note Miles Poindexter, attorney, member of Congress from Washington State, and diplomat, was born in 1868 in Tennessee and grew up in Virginia. He attended Washington and Lee University (undergraduate and law school), receiving his law degree in 1891. He moved to Walla Walla, Washington, was admitted to the bar and began his law practice. He entered politics soon after his arrival and ran successfully for County Prosecutor as a Democrat in 1892. Poindexter moved to Spokane in 1897 where he continued the practice of law. He switched to the Republican Party in Spokane, where he received an appointment as deputy prosecuting attorney (1898-1904). In 1904 he was elected Superior Court Judge. Poindexter became identified with progressive causes and it was as a progressive Republican and a supporter of Theodore Roosevelt that he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1908 and to the Senate in 1910. -

Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. All errors and omissions are solely those of the author. U.S.S. Oregon City (CA-122) By James V. Hillegas-Elting The U.S.S. Oregon City (CA-122) was the namesake of its class of heavy cruisers. Designed, ordered, and built during World War II, it was an advanced warship; but the war emergency was over when the ship entered full service in early 1946. About two-and-a-half years after Secretary Frank Knox announced the navy's plan to build a ship to honor Oregon City, Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts, launched the ship on June 9, 1945. The wife of Oregon City Commissioner Raymond P. Caufield was present to sponsor the ship, and singer Bing Crosby attended as part of a war bond drive. The Oregon City class weighed 13,000 tons, was 673’5” long, and had a beam of 70’10”, draft of 26’4”, and speed of 32.6 knots. The class carried a crew of 1,142, and its main armament was nine 8” guns in three turrets (two fore and one aft). For air defense, it had twelve 5” guns, forty-eight 40mm guns, and twenty 20mm guns. The navy planned to build ten ships of the class, but only two others were built as heavy cruisers: the Albany (CA-123), launched on June 30, 1945, and the Rochester (CA-124), launched on August 28, 1945. Once commissioned in February 1946, the Oregon City completed its “shakedown” cruise between Boston and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with Oregon City Mayor J.B. Caldwell among the guests. Based in Boston, the Oregon City served as the flagship of the 4th Fleet from July 1946 until its reassignment to the 2nd Fleet in January 1947. -

A Visual Guide to the Gato Class
A VISUAL GUIDE TO THE U.S. FLEET SUBMARINES PART ONE: GATO CLASS (WITH A TAMBOR/GAR CLASS POSTSCRIPT) 1941-1945 BY DAVID L. JOHNSTON 2010 (revised June, 2010) A cursory review of photographs of the U.S. fleet submarines of World War II often leaves the reader with the impression that the boats were nearly identical in appearance. Indeed, the fleet boats from the Porpoise class all the way to the late war Tench class were all similar enough in appearance that it is easy to see how this impression is justified. However, a more detailed examination of the boats will reveal a bewildering array of differences, some of them quite distinct, that allow the separation of the boats into their respective classes. Ironically, the rapidly changing configuration of the boats’ appearances often makes it difficult to get down to a specific boat identification. However being familiar with all of the wartime changes will allow you to narrow down the date of the photo and when combined with other data will sometimes get you the specific name. The Gato class started construction on 11 September 1940 with the Drum at Portsmouth and ended on 01 March 1944 with the commissioning of the Hammerhead at Manitowoc. With a construction period spanning a time of tremendous change within the force, these boats were subjected to several distinct modifications to their outward appearance, with these configurations being distinct enough to allow their visual separation from the earlier Porpoise/Perch, Salmon/Sargo, and Tambor/Gar boats, and the later Balao and Tench classes. -

The mission of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation is to serve families and individuals with programs and events that promote the arts, education and volunteerism. We value environmental responsibility, diversity, patriotism and our historic and floral heritage. The Foundation has been bringing the community together to celebrate the City of Roses for over a century. As a 501(c)3 non‐profit foundation, the Rose Festival relies on individual and corporate donors to help fund events and programs that support our mission. The Rose Festival’s main events include the electrifying nighttime Starlight Parade, the all‐floral traditional Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade, a children’s parade – the Fred Meyer Junior Parade – and CityFair, an urban three‐week fair that features carnival rides, food and concerts for fans of all ages. Environmental responsibility is a well‐known and celebrated tradition in Portland. As Portland’s Official Festival, the Rose Festival has a responsibility to the community to implement green initiatives in all of the events. For 20 years, the Cleanest & Greenest program has provided cleanups after all three parades, as well as environmental and recycling programs at CityFair. All of the Clean & Green Team’s efforts have the objective of keeping Portland’s streets and parks looking their best for everyone to enjoy. -

PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL NOTAMS 2009 NOTAM I JUNE 4, 2009 Beginning on Thursday, June 4th 0600 hours and continuing through 1900 hours, Naval vessels will be traveling up the Columbia and Willamette Rivers to dock at Portland’s Waterfront Park for the Portland Rose Festival. Due to a heightened level of security aboard these vessels, airmen should avoid direct over-flight or operations near these vessels. Crews on the vessels are on high alert. The purpose of this NOTAM is to avoid placing Naval personnel in the position of having to make a judgment call about the intentions of an aircraft approaching the ships. NOTAM 2 JUNE 5-8, 2009 From June 5th @ 1500 hours to June 8th, 2009 @ 1300 hours PDT, Naval vessels will be docked in the Willamette River in front of the Portland Downtown Heliport for the Portland Rose Festival. Due to a heightened level of security aboard these vessels, airmen should avoid direct over-flight of these vessels for any operations including, but not limited to, approach to and departure from the Portland Downtown Heliport. If possible, airmen should use the north approach both in and out of the facility. Aircraft utilizing the Heliport or operating in the area of these Naval Vessels should initiate and maintain radio communication with joint Navy/Cost Guard Command Post on 123.075 when approaching the downtown area. While the ships are in Portland, the area of the Willamette River between the Steel Bridge and the Hawthorne Bridge will be a designated Coast Guard Security Zone. Any operations, including water taxiing (Seaplanes) are prohibited. -
