Dissertation Advisor: Lizabeth Cohen Casey Bohlen The Politics of Conscience: Religious Activism and Social Change in Postwar America ABSTRACT This dissertation is a history of the post-World War II United States religious left, from its birth in the early Cold War through its twilight in the mid-1970s. Although the study of religion and politics is flourishing, recent scholarship has overwhelmingly focused on the Christian right and the resurgence of American evangelicalism. Yet Jewish, Catholic, and ecumenical Protestant activists were key players in the mid-century political left, from nuns staging interracial sit-ins in the middle of Chicago’s busiest intersections to rabbis and ministers running the nation’s largest illegal abortion referral network. Focusing on the work of activist clergy and religious youth, this project explains why such a diverse group of believers took to the streets in the name of conscience, what impact their activism had on public life, and why their influence withered in the last third of the twentieth century. It locates the origins of the postwar religious left - counterintuitively - in the Cold War religious revival of the 1950s; demonstrates how interfaith activism helped to transform postwar liberalism from a technocratic project to a moral crusade; and shows how mass disaffiliation in the 1970s undermined the religious left’s national resources at the same moment that Christian conservatives were experiencing a renaissance, leading to their eclipse in the public eye. First and foremost, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee, who were all unceasingly generous with their time, advice, and critical feedback. The fingerprints of my advisor, Lizabeth Cohen, are all over this dissertation, from the minutiae of word choice to the grand sweep of the argument. I refer back to her margin notes on a daily basis, the bold strokes of her pen striking out unnecessary hyphens and pushing me towards sharper reasoning and greater economy of language. I will never understand how she carved out so much time for her students while serving as Dean, but I am eternally grateful that she did. Jim Kloppenberg’s near-miraculous ability to conjure up grand insights out of mundane details is unparalleled. Entire sections of this dissertation sprang from of the seeds of his passing comments, and our conversations in his office were among the most intellectually invigorating experiences of all of graduate school. Lisa McGirr knows more about modern social movements than any other human being on the planet, and insofar as I successfully connected the work of grassroots actors to larger patterns of social change, it was through her influence and scholarly example. Curtis Evans warmly welcomed me into the academic community at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School, and then went above and beyond by agreeing to serve as my outside reader. His expertise in the history of religion was invaluable, as was his constant encouragement of the project. My interest in this research topic stretches back to my time as an undergraduate at Brown University, when Robert Self first encouraged me to explore the history of the religious left and vi Luther Spoehr shepherded my sprawling interests into a more succinct thesis on Father Robert Drinan, the first Catholic priest elected to Congress. Simon & Schuster. 746 pp. $30 Pillar of Fire is the second volume of Taylor Branch's projected threevolume history of the American black freedom struggle during the 1950s and 1960s. Ten years ago, Branch published his first volume, Parting the Waters, a richly detailed account of the civil rights movement that covered the years 1954-63 in 922 pages of text. Ending with the aftermath of John F. Kennedy's November 22 assassination, Parting the Waters was intended to be the first of two volumes that would carry the story forward until Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination on April 4, 1968. But Branch changed plans, expanding his history from two volumes to three. Pillar of Fire covers the movement's history from December 1963 until February 1965 in 613 pages of text. Or, to be more precise, about 419 pages of text, for the first 194 pages are devoted to recapitulating much of the 1962-63 history that the author comprehensively treated in Parting the Waters. Should Pillar of Fire be evaluated by itself, or should it be assessed in tandem with Parting the Waters? As King often said, most "either-or" questions-this one included-are best answered with "bothand" responses. Comparing Pillar with Parting raises two questions: why devote almost one-third of Pillar to a reprise of Parting, and why allocate 400-plus pages to essentially just 1964, when all of 1954 through 1963 merited "only" 900? In the author's defense, his readers- whether or not they read Parting the Waters a decade ago-deserve some recapitulation, and 1963 and 1964 almost inarguably were the crucial years of the civil rights movement.

On Sunday night an 'Interfaith Service for Consci­ entious Dissent' was held at the First Church of Boston. Attended by about 700 people, and addressed by clergymen of the various faiths, the service led up to a sermon on 'Vietnam and Dissent' by Rev. William Sloane Coffin.     Research Note James Luther Adams Bibliographies JARED A. FARLEY James Luther Adams (1901-1994) is widely considered the twentieth century’s leading Unitarian theologian. Serving as professor of theology and ethics at Meadville Lombard Theological School and the Federated Theological Faculty in Chicago, IL (1936-1957), and at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, MA (1957-1968), Adams authored innumerable sermons, essays and book chapters. Among scholars, he is known for having translated the works of Paul Tillich and Ernst Troeltsch into English. Among students of ministry, he is recognized for his arguments concerning the religious efficacy of voluntary associations, derived from his experiences confronting Nazism in pre-World War II Germany. An intellectual with an uncanny ability to recall information and see connections across diverse subjects, Adams drew deeply from the well of theological, historical, and social concern that was his life. His writings preserve much of what he came to believe. The following two bibliographies came about as a helpful by- product of my research on James Luther Adams. These titles list and cross-reference the sermons, essays and addresses of JLA that have been reprinted in the various edited volumes of his writings, including the recently published Prophet to the Powerful (2008). Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson in 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “black codes” to control the labor and behavior of former enslaved people and other African Americans. Outrage in the North over these codes eroded support for the approach known as Presidential Reconstruction and led to the triumph of the more radical wing of the Republican Party. During Radical Reconstruction, which began with the passage of the Reconstruction Act of 1867, newly enfranchised Black people gained a voice in government for the first time in American history, winning election to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces– including the Ku Klux Klan–would reverse the changes wrought by Radical Reconstruction in a violent backlash that restored white supremacy in the South. Emancipation and Reconstruction At the outset of the Civil War, to the dismay of the more radical abolitionists in the North, President Abraham Lincoln did not make abolition of slavery a goal of the Union war effort. To do so, he feared, would drive the border slave states still loyal to the Union into the Confederacy and anger more conservative northerners.
