Terrence Walker, 2018 (Series 9) Dates of creation: 1966-2013 (predominantly 1968-1975) Extent: 22 Boxes (2.7 metres) History of Rochdale College: Rochdale College, which occupied the 18-story building that still stands at 341 Bloor Street West, Toronto, was a co-operative living space for 840 residents and an experimental “free university” that operated between 1968 and 1975. It was one of over 300 tuition-free universities in North America at the time and its residential accommodations included communal living arrangements along with traditional apartments. Located on the edge of the University of Toronto’s downtown campus, and founded on idealistic principles of broadly democratic self- governance, communal living, and education free of traditional forms and hierarchies (such as exams, curriculums, degrees, and a faculty), Rochdale was an example of the kind of countercultural initiatives that emerged in North America during the 1960s and 1970s. It was, in addition, home to many expatriate Americans, often draft resisters who opposed fighting in the Vietnam War. Rochdale was initially incorporated in 1964 by Campus Co-Operative Residence Incorporated (CCRI), a non-profit organization founded to address university students’ housing needs. Rochdale’s relationship to CCRI was weakened when, for a variety of reasons, it had to accept a large number of non-students (with little or no screening) as residents when the building opened in 1968. In addition, CCRI opposed the educational component of Rochdale. Rochdale consequently separated from CCRI and became its own non-profit corporate entity. Almost from the beginning, Rochdale faced problems that would eventually lead to its demise. Lack of screening for residents and the existence of communal residence floors facilitated a non- resident “squatter” problem, and substantial drug activity (sales as well as use). This, in turn, led to frequent police raids and complaints from neighbours. Rochdale also had trouble collecting rent from residents and struggled to pay the mortgage on the building. By the early 1970s, the building was in receivership and under the financial control of Clarkson Company, Inc., who put increasing pressure on Rochdale residents and Rochdale’s Governing Council pay their rents or leave the building. By 1974, residents had dwindled to a few hundred, and remaining Rochdale leaders were fighting a losing battle to keep the institution alive. The last Rochdale residents were evicted on May 30, 1975. 1 MS Rochdale College Collection Coll. Formerly: T-10 00013 00184 Rochdale’s legacy lives on today in a number of creative and other institutions that began at the college. These include Coach House Press, House of Anansi Press, Theatre Passe Muraile, The Toronto Free Dance Theatre, and the Huron Playschool Cooperative (originally Rochdale’s cooperative daycare). Custodial History The Rochdale College Collection consists of materials that had varied custodial histories before their arrival at the Fisher Library. The library purchased the bulk of the materials (Series 1-6; boxes 1-18), in 1977 from Charles Taylor of Akashakron Books in Toronto. The previous ownership of these materials is unknown, but they may likely have come from more than one person. The rest of the materials are gifts to the library that came from four separate donors who either lived at Rochdale or had some other association with the college: Miriam Clavir (2009 gift, Series 7, box 19), Katherine Lochnan (2011 gift, Series 8, box 19), C. Terrance Walker (2018 gift, Series 9, boxes 20-21), and John R. Williams (2013 gift, Series 10, box 22). Scope and content: Materials include administrative and financial documents for Rochdale College’s Governing Council and Education Council, correspondence; notices posted at Rochdale, newspaper clippings, writings about Rochdale, Rochdale publications, and audio recordings about Rochdale and other topics.
