Issue № 11 April 2014 Is the battery still okay? Which component is faulty? Do we really need a hundred di,erent chargers in stock?

How do we make sure we have reliable sparepart supply for the "rst ten years a#er purchase? Do we need to hire an electrician for electric bikes? Can we add a second battery for extended range? $e customer wants to buy a to charge his vehicle, what can we o%er? Why did the battery die? Is that covered by the warranty? Is it possible to add a second throttle?

Present

Servicing light electric vehicles is expensive because keeping a stock of spare parts requires space and ties up money. Every vehicle needs its own charger. Using the wrong charger is a real danger as the battery might short circuit and fail. For bicycle retailers it is di!cult to determine which part of the electric drive failed, therefore diagnostic service tools are a great help. Most manufacturers do not provide such tools and their pro- tocols are not designed to provide data which helps to diagnose prob- lems. "ose few manufacturers which o#er diagnostic tools recommend ǢǺǺȜǝȜȇȅȧǺȞǺǚȇȄȨǸǬȆȞ expensive special equipment only available to licensed dealers. "e history of batteries cannot be determined. So a used battery can be like-new and well maintained, or almost at the end of its life.

Reselling a battery is a gamble.

With EnergyBus

"e EnergyBus connectors and bus system makes it possible to provide one charger for every battery, independent of chemistry and size. Since systems are compatible, the dealer does not have to stock many similar components of di#erent suppliers, but instead can o#er a variety of com- ponents in price and functionality.

A diagnostic tool with service so$ware can access the diagnosis data of any %&'. It allows quick and e!cient diagnosis so the faulty component can be identi(ed and replaced. Spare parts have a longer availability and newer components can replace older ones without braking the system (backwards compatibility). "e battery’s history can be read and its )*+,- and state of health )*+.- determined. With this data %&' diagnosis tool warranty cases can be separated from misuse issues and the value of used batteries can be determined for resale.

Treasurer Hannes Neupert discusses EnergyBus and its work in bringing together energy and information in a single connection

EnergyBus is a member organisation that consists of persons, institutions, associations and companies. Everyone who wants to works with and on the EnergyBus standard is free to join. As a member, one will gain access to the EnergyBus protocol, be allowed to use EnergyBus applications and connectors and is entitled to work on the development of more features.

EnergyBus has seen constant growth since 422F. Currently, there are about In 4200 the (rst EnergyBus connector set sold 522,222 units in a trial of its beta version. In March 4204 the (nal version was released. G2 members. Some of them already apply the EnergyBus communication protocol and coupler set; others use still the beta version of the Energy- Bus charging coupler. Furthermore, members come together in the various technical committees to de(ne and improve the EnergyBus standard. To- gether with iso and iec committees, the members are dedicated to har- monise interfaces connecting energy and communication. In %&' market, the communication solution is important for developing %&' technology. EnergyBus as standard communication protocol can realize the compatibility of %&' market. HiTech Energy focuses on safe and user-friendly Energy solutions; to achieve this we use the EnergyBus standard. — HiTech Energy

Being an active player on the pedelec and e-bike market we care about light electric vehicles. Improvements in legislation and – probably even more important – in standardization are needed to secure the electric bicycle’s role as an attractive, safe and reliable means of personal transport. "e EnergyBus initiative is an important step towards improvement of overall product safety, quality, reliability and serviceability. Joining as an Associate Member is the natural way to contribute to these e#orts. — Höganäs AB

EnergyBus is currently the only real standard for Pedelecs and E-Bikes. Because Marquardt is developing com- ponents for pedelecs, (.DC* and motorcontrols) we think, that our products have to be designed to meet this standard, which will have a major role in the near future. — Marquardt Mechatronik GmbH

Standardization is necessary for %&' to make them user-friendly. As a multi-business company, we +23"1- Corpo- ration could share same values with EnergyBus. We have developed a motor system for ebike, and seeking oppor- tunity for service and infrastructure businesses (charging-station, etc.). We believe that we can provide many products and services to the market. — Nidec Copal

"e members of the EnergyBus association share a common goal: to set a new standard in the development of %&'’s electric components through collaboration, knowledge exchange and continuous professional devel- opment. As a member of the association we developed a whole range of EnergyBus-friendly products and are co-developer of the worldwide (rst EnergyBus rental and charging station for pedelecs. Among our EnergyBus components, you will (nd the equipment for electric charging stations, such as chargers, charge controllers, bike adapters, ABC3-card readers and other access and control devices. — pironex GmbH

Standardization is a key success factor for technological products, not only in consumer markets. "e complex- ity o$en discourages users and third-party manufacturers to deal with new technologies and thereby inhibits product success. "ese circumstances o$en lead to failure of certain promising innovations. In addition, ensur- ing standardized communication and interface hardware, a long-term market growth will be provided through sustainable built infrastructure and the ongoing development of new components for a certain core technology. "is has been achieved especially but not only by the use of EnergyBus as a communication and interface stand- ard.
