E. Poland ceased to be a haven for the sons of Judah, when its short-sighted kings summoned the Jesuits to supervise the training of the young nobles and the clergy and crush the spirit of the Polish dissidents. These originators of disunion, to whom the frequent partition of Poland must be attributed, sought to undermine the unobtrusive power which the Jews, through their money and prudence, exercised over the nobles, and they combined with their other foes, German workmen and trades-people, members of the guilds, to restrict and oppress them. After that time there were repeated persecutions of Jews in Poland; sometimes the German guild members, sometimes the disciples of the Jesuits, raised a hue and cry against them. -
The Secular Music of the Yemenite Jews As an Expression of Cultural Demarcation Between the Sexes
JASO 27/2 (1996): 113-135 THE SECULAR MUSIC OF THE YEMENITE JEWS AS AN EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL DEMARCATION BETWEEN THE SEXES MARILYN HERMAN JEWISH men and women in Yemen are portrayed in the sociological and anthropo logical literature as having lived in separate conceptual and spatial worlds. As a result, two very separate bodies of song existed, one pertaining to men and the other to women. In this paper, I show how the culturally defined demarcation be tween the sexes is reflected and epitomized in the music of the Jews who lived in Yemen. i The key to this separation lies in the fact that women were banned from the synagogue altogether. This exclusion is not prescribed by Jewish law, and there is no precedent for it in the Bible or other Jewish literature or communities. The reason given for women being banned from the synagogue in Yemen was the fear that they might be menstruating. The condition of menstruation is, in Jewish law, This paper is based on my MA thesis (Herman 1985), which was written under the supervision and with the moral and academic support of Dr P. T. W. Baxter of Manchester University. My brother Geoffrey Herman willingly and painstakingly translated Hebrew articles into English for my benefit while I was writing this thesis. I. Singing the Memory of Sepharad: Traditional Sephardic Song and its Interpretation Katerina Garcia Abstract The transmission and interpretation of Sephardic songs is inextricably linked to Sephardic culture, and to this day represents a powerful marker of identity. It is the aim of this article to first contextualise traditional Sephardic song by outlining a brief introduction into the cultural background of the Sephardic Diaspora. Subsequently, I will introduce the various secular forms and genres of Sephardic traditional song, focusing on the modes of their interpretation by both contemporary Sephardic and non-Sephardic musicians. In doing so, I will propose a typology of performance approaches, with regards to the role that the re-imagining of Sepharad as a mythical land of the past plays in this process. Keywords: Sephardic music, Judeo-Spanish song, interpretation Introduction The Sephardic Jews, or Sephardim1, represent the second largest ethnic division within Judaism, the first one being the Ashkenazim, or German and Eastern-European Jews. In the narrowest sense of the term, Sephardim are the descendants of the Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century (Spain, 1492; Portugal, 1496), and those who assimilated culturally to them in the main areas of Sephardic settlement post-1492 The areas of the Sephardic diaspora are indicated in Figure 1: Figure 1 – The Sephardic Diaspora (Sephiha and Weinstock 1997) Ethnomusicology Ireland 5 (2017) Garcia 172 For the present discussion of traditional Sephardic music, only the areas of the Eastern Mediterranean (incl. the present-day state of Israel), the Balkan Peninsula and North Africa (the former Ottoman Empire) are relevant, as it is here that a specific Sephardic language and culture develop. -

This ancestral form of speech stands out from Central Asturian and especially from Standard Span- ish. For a number of reasons, ranging from profound changes in pronunciation, vo- cabulary, morphology and information structure to slight but very relevant effects on syntax. The main goal of this study is to examine the special marking of direct objects in order to find out what triggers the distribution of Differential Object Marking in this variety. To this aim, this paper will examine, from a variationist perspective, the influ- ence of a number of semantic and discourse-pragmatic parameters on the marking of direct objects in this Western Asturian language as well as in Standard Spanish1 and Central Asturian (which is generally considered the normative variety of Asturian). The results obtained from this comparison will allow us to outline the differences be- tween these three varieties in terms of object marking, shedding more light on the ori- gin and function of Differential Object Marking in Spanish. Jewish American Women’s Writing: Dislodging Preconceptions by Challenging Expectations Judith Lewin Josh Lambert describes “a little experiment” that he does with his Jewish literature classes: “I ask them to take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil…. I say, ‘Draw a Jew.’…. One of my favorite questions to ask first is this: ‘How many of you drew a woman?’ (Usually, it’s at most one or two…)” (paras.1-3). Since Lambert notes that “usually, it’s at most one or two,” the students’ inability to imagine a woman inhabiting the category “Jew” is worth dwelling upon.1 Why is it Jewish American women are invisible, inaudible, and insufficiently read? This essay proposes a curriculum that engages students to think broadly and fluidly about Jewish American women authors and the issues and themes in their fiction. Previous pedagogical essays on Jewish American women’s writing include two in sociology/women’s studies on identities (see Friedman and Rosenberg; Sigalow), Sheila Jelen’s in Shofar on Hebrew and Yiddish texts, and a special issue in MELUS 37:2 (Summer 2012) that include women’s literature but without gender as a focus. The aim of this essay, by contrast, is to introduce teachers of American literature to an array of texts written by American Jewish women that will engage critical reading, thinking and writing by contemporary college undergraduates. Two questions must be dealt with right away. First, how does one justify treating Jewish American women’s literature in isolation? Second, how does one challenge the expectations of what such a course entails? As Lambert demonstrated from his informal survey, Jewish women writers are doubly invisible, to Jewish literature as women and to 1 women’s literature as Jews.
