Current series in Lansing: Dayton 2, Lansing 2. 12 Road Games in 13 Days: The Dragons are 5-4 on the road trip (West Michigan and Lansing), which has been shortened to 11 games due to a postponement in West Michigan that could not be made up during that series. Awards: Former Dragons pitcher Graham Ashcraft has been named the Cincinnati Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June. Ashcraft made three starts for Dayton in June and did not allow an earned run in 18 innings. He was promoted to Chattanooga after his start with Dayton on June 17 and made two starts with the Lookouts, tossing 14 more innings without allowing a run. For the month overall, Ashcraft worked 32 innings, allowing 10 hits and one unearned run, with nine walks and 39 strikeouts. He was 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Ashcraft is the second Dayton player to win a Reds monthly award in 2021. Brian Rey won the Batter of the Month in May. GREG WEEKS) The game of baseball has rarely changed since its beginnings, and its resultant ascent to the United States national pastime has done little to change the fundamentals of the sport. However, there have been significant shifts in the demographics of Major League Baseball. Latino players have seen their numbers jump up to 26.9% (2012) from single digits in the 1960s, while African-American players peaked at 18.5% two decades after desegregation, but has since fallen to the current (2012) level of 7.2%. The goal of this research project is to determine the cause for the rise in the numbers of foreign-born Latino baseball players appearing in the United States’ top baseball league. Previous historiography on the subject has suggested that U.S. neocolonial patterns led to baseball’s wild spread across parts of Latin America; consequently, these patterns contribute to the significant influx of foreign-born Latinos debuting in Major League Baseball. What has not been examined extensively is the effect economic factors have on the rise and fall of the number of players moving to Major League Baseball.

Source: Japanese BallPlayers.com at http://tinyurl.com/zzydv3v. he essay that follows, with a primary focus on professional baseball, is intended as an in- troductory comparative overview of a game long played in the US and Japan. I hope it will provide readers with some context to learn more about a complex, evolving, and, most of all, Tfascinating topic, especially for lovers of baseball on both sides of the Pacific. Baseball, although seriously challenged by the popularity of other sports, has traditionally been considered America’s pastime and was for a long time the nation’s most popular sport. The game is an original American sport, but has sunk deep roots into other regions, including Latin America and East Asia. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and became the national sport there during the early post-World War II period. The game as it is played and organized in both countries, however, is considerably different. The basic rules are mostly the same, but cultural differences between Americans and Japanese are clearly reflected in how both nations approach their versions of baseball. Although players from both countries have flourished in both American and Japanese leagues, at times the cultural differences are substantial, and some attempts to bridge the gaps have ended in failure. Still, while doubtful the Japanese version has changed the American game, there is some evidence that the American version has exerted some changes in the Japanese game.

On March 16, 2020, I issued an emergency order closing all City buildings to the public and sending a large portion of our workforce to work from home due to the COIVD-19 pandemic. We were faced with the same questions as the rest of the country: how to run a city while protecting our employees and our residents? City of Lansing employees showed up and continue to serve residents with integrity and professionalism. Our essential workers, the backbone of our City, washed their hands, masked up and went to work. Our police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMT’s responded to tens of thousands of calls for service to aid our residents and keep them safe. Our Public Service staff completed more than 14 miles of road improvements, more than 1,200 tree trimming/removals and cleaned more than 66 miles of storm and sanitary sewer pipes. Ingham County Parks Millage funded work continued to maintain and improve the Lansing River Trail by resolving riverbank erosion near Moores Park that included fortifying the riverbank and repairing fencing.

MURPHY* INTRODUCTION “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”1 Imagine a warm summer evening in Rome, Georgia. This city of just under 36,000 residents2 is home to the Rome Braves, the Class-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.3 State Mutual Stadium is filled to capacity as the local residents pack the stands to cheer on their hometown Braves.4 The smell of peanuts, popcorn, and hotdogs emanates throughout the stadium. A beer vendor climbs up and down the stadium steps hollering, “Ice cold beer!” Between innings, children are brought out on the field to partake in on-field promotions. After the game, these same children line up to run the bases, meet the mascot, and enjoy the postgame firework display. This minor league game brings the people of Rome, Georgia together and provides them with a common identity. Bradley Reynolds, general manager of the Double-A Mobile BayBears, highlighted the importance of minor league baseball when he said, “What keeps fans coming back isn’t baseball. If they want a better baseball game, they can see it on ESPN. This is about affordability, family fun, wholesome entertainment. That’s what makes this business unique and what makes it work.”5 Considered to be “America’s National Pastime,”6 baseball holds a special place in the hearts of many. He concluded that, “What is actu- ally being invaded here is America and its hold on its theoretical na- tional pastime. We’re not sure exactly when this happened—possi- bly while you were busy watching a Yankees-Red Sox game—but this isn’t just America’s sport anymore. It is Latin America’s sport.” While it may not have gone that far yet, the presence of Latino players in baseball, especially in Major League Baseball, has grown enormously. In 1990, the Racial and Gender Report Card recorded that 13 percent of MLB players were Latino. In the 2009 MLB Racial and Gender Report Card, 27 percent of the players were La- tino.     Working Paper Series, Paper No. 11-05 Organizational Differences between U.S. Major Leagues and European Leagues: Implications for Salary Caps Helmut Dietl†, Egon Franck††, Markus Lang††† and Alexander Rathke††††, March 2011 Abstract This paper outlines and compares the organizational structure of major sports leagues, explores the reasoning behind their formation, and derives implications for salary caps in European football. To understand why sports leagues have developed a specific organizational structure, one must take the economic peculiarities of team sports leagues into consideration. For this purpose, we analyze the production process and illuminate its major peculiarities. For example, we present the difference between economic competition and competition on the pitch and discuss the consequences of this distinction for an attractive final product. Furthermore, we show that a hold-up problem exists between the two stages of the production process and demonstrate how these problems are overcome by the organizational structure chosen by sports leagues. We also outline the differences between the U.S. major leagues and European leagues and document recent developments in that context.
