Kansas City, Mo. – A 14-0 run that covered the end of the 2nd quarter and the start of the third propelled third seeded and 12th ranked Fort Hays State to a 79-65 win over the sixth seeded Lions Thursday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. Fort Hays started on an 8-0 run forcing a Lions time out with 8:21 left in the quarter then junior Deb Holcomb went to work going on a 7-0 run of her own with a pair of lay ups and a three to cut the lead to 8-7. After a FHSU turnover the Lions’ sophomore Jenson Maydew hit a jumper in the paint to give Southern their first lead of the day at 11-10 with 4:04 left in the quarter. The Lions’ lead went up to 13-10 before a pair of free throws from FHSU gave them a 14-13 lead back with 2:16 left in the quarter. A drive by senior Sharese Jones made it 15-14 Lions with just under 30 seconds to play in the quarter and FHSU hit a three with 11 seconds to make it 17-15 at the break. For the half Jones led all scorers with 12 points and Holcomb added 7 and led the team in rebounding, four, and assists, two. Fort Hays State was led by Nikola Kacperska with 10 points and Jill Faxon had five rebounds and Paige Lunsford had two assists. The Lions outshot Fort Hays State 44 percent (11-for-25) to 42.3 percent (11-for-26). The Tigers built their lead at the charity stripe going 11-for-15 to Southern’s 6-for-6. Fort Hays State came out in the second half and extended their run to 14-0 before a three from Maydew gave the Lions their first points of the third quarter with 5:02 left in the quarter. The Tigers’ lead ballooned up to 14, 50-36, on a free throw from Bohuslavsky with 3:20 left in the period. The Lions started to chip away with a layup form Jones, a three pointer from sophomore Dru Clark, and an old fashioned three point play from Jones made it 52-44 with 1:42 to play. A layup from Faxon and a pair of free throws from Kacperska pushed the lead back to 12 before a strong post move from Maydew cut the lead to 10, 56-46 as time expired in the quarter. Bohuslavsky opened the final quarter with a layup that pushed the FHSU lead back to 12 before a three pointer from senior Kenya Wilson-Brown cut it back down to nine, 58-49, just over 30 seconds into the fourth. The Tigers went on a 10-0 over the next four minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 70-51 on a layup from Elle Stein. From there Southern would whittle the lead down to 13 on a layup from Wilson-Brown and then down to 12, 74-62, on a three pointer from Maydew, then 11 on a three from Clark, 76-65, with 45 seconds remaining. A free throw and a layup for FHSU with under 11 seconds left made the final 79-65. Jones led all scorers with 21 while Holcomb added 11 and Maydew 10 for the Lions. FHSU had five score in double figures with Faxon leading the way with 18 and Bohuslavsky added 14.
