23 Mercedes Estes D / 5-3 / Freshman St. Joseph, Mo. 20 2011 Griffon Soccer Media Guide A young soccer squad will look to new leadership in 2011 in hopes of improving upon an injury plagued 2-10-6 overall record in 2010; 2-8-6 in MIAA play. After five seasons leading the Griffons, Jeff Hansen resigned as head coach of the Griffon soccer team in late July. Western hired first year Head Coach Chad Edwards in early August. Defender Erin Widrig (5-6, Jr.) and midfielder Ashlyn Castillo (5-6, Jr.) were both named Honorable Mention All-MIAA in 2010, and headline a list of 12 returning players for the Griffons. Western will miss three departed seniors that received all conference nods last season, including Second Team All-MIAA goalkeeper Jenna Weis, but will count on experience and youth in the way of nine freshmen. Widrig started all 18 games in 2010, and has played in all 38 games since arriving at Western in 2009. The Wichita, Kan. native was second on the team with 1,557 minutes played, and helped the Griffons to four shutout performances. Castillo has joined Widrig in all 38 games in her career, including 17 starts last season. After redshirting last year, Kelly Voigts (5-7, Jr.) will vie for the spot left in goal by Weis’s departure. Molly Slattery ( 5-6, Sr.) has started 57 games for the Griffons at the defender position and was an Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection in 2009. Forward Abby Widrig (5-6, Jr.) will look to put an injury plagued 2010 season behind her, and get back to the level that earned her Second Team All-MIAA status as a freshman in 2009. Widrig holds numerous MWSU records and looks to move out of second in several career record categories this season. Brooke English (5-3, Sr.) returns after averaging 32 minutes per game last season. One of many Wichita, Kan. natives on the squad, English brings three years of game experience. Midfielder Audrey Henderson (5-6, Sr.) has started 38 games over the past two seasons, including all 18 games last year. Henderson tied for the team lead with six points in 2010, and led the Griffons with three goals. Jeanna Ross (5-4, Sr.) returns with three seasons of playing experience under her belt. Ashley Juravich ( 5-4, So.) looks to bounce back after taking a medical redshirt in 2010. Juravich 2011 Season PReview logged time in 20 games in 2009 and was named MIAA Offensive player of the week on Nov. 3, 2009. Midfielder Ashley Grunder (5-2, So.) made her present felt against her old team in 2010. The Washburn University transfer had the game winning assist against her old team on October 21. After four games on the road to open the season, the Griffons will welcome Fort Hays State to Spratt Stadium on September 24. It is the first of five home matches for Western.

42 2011 Griffon Soccer Media Guide 2010 Season in Review

A New Era For Griffon Soccer 4343 The Missouri Western soccer program had its most successful season yet in 2009, finishing 8-10-2. They finished with the most wins in the program’s five year history and broke several records.

Western started off the season with the challenge of integrating several newcomers into a team of strong returners. The Griffons started off nonconference play at two tournaments and came out 2-2. The season began at the Northwest Missouri State Classic against Newman University. The Griffons fought hard, but ended up dropping the first game 3-1. The next day they faced Southwest Oklahoma State and got their first win 2-0.

The next weekend, the Griffons traveled to San Angelo, Texas to face Angelo State and East Central. Both games were close. Western lost to Angelo State 2-1 and defeated East Central 3-2.

The next weekend Western started conference play against the top ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Although the Griffons fought hard, they eventually fell 4-2 to the talented team. The conference schedule continued to get more difficult, as the Griffons faced the rival Northwest Bearcats and Emporia State the following week. During the game against Northwest, Western sacrificed two second half goals that hurt the Griffons. The game ended with a score of 3-1. A few days later, the Griffons finally were able to play on their home turf against the . The first half was a battle, but the Griffon’s couldn’t respond to the Hornet’s goal late in the game. Western lost the game 1-0. Their record dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.

Western was hoping to turn things around the following weekend, and they did just that. The Griffons faced Washburn and defeated the Lady Blues for the first time since the program’s inaugural season. Western had two goals from Abby Widrig and one from Jessica Martin and shut out Washburn 3-0. Western continued their success against Southwest Baptist on the road shortly afterward. Desi Swanson got her first two goals of the season as the Griffons defeated SBU 2-0 and improved their conference record to 2-3. 2011 Season Review The next conference foe that Western faced was the . The game was a battle that went into double overtime and ended as a heartbreaker for Western. The Lions pulled off the win 2-1 on a penalty kick. It seemed to be déjà vu for the Griffons the next week, as they lost to Truman State in double overtime on a free kick 1-0.

44 2011 Griffon Soccer Media Guide The hardships on the road continued when the Griffons faced Central Missouri. A late goal from the Jennies put Central up 1-0 and the Griffons couldn’t recover. After this loss, Western fell to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA.

Despite three tough consecutive losses, the Griffons were able to bounce back during their second game against Northwest. Abby Widrig and Ashlyn Castillo scored one goal apiece and helped lift the Griffons past the Bearcats 2-0. This marked the fifth win of the season, and a record number of wins for the program. When the Griffons finally returned home, they again faced the Central Missouri Jennies. They lost another hard fought battle 1-0.

Western’s next challenge was the talented Nebraska-Omaha team, who was ranked at the top of the conference and came into the game with a record of 8-1. Western played a solid game of soccer and forced the Mavs to a 1-1 tie. The momentum from this great accomplishment helped the Griffons win their final home game which followed the tie with the Mavs. Western defeated Missouri Southern 1-0. The Griffons went back out on the road and continued their successful streak with a 3-0 over Emporia State and a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist. Western’s record improved to 8-9-1 overall and 6-7-1 in MIAA play.

Western then faced Truman State, another top team in the conference. After yet another hard fought battle, the Griffons and the Bulldogs had to settle for a double overtime tie. Freshman Ashley Juravich was named MIAA All-Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the past few Griffon games.

Western’s season finale took place in Topeka, KS against the Washburn Lady Blues. After a very successful streak of wins, the Griffons weren’t able to pull it out against Washburn and ended the season on a disappointing 1-0 loss. The Griffons finished the season 8-10-2 overall and 6-8-2 in the MIAA. Despite ending the season on a loss, Western made great positive strides during the 2009 season.

Western had six players named to All-MIAA teams. Freshman Abby Widrig garnered second team honors, while Molly Slattery, Erin

Widrig, Ashlyn Castillo and Jessica Martin were named honorable 2011 Season Review mention. Martin was also named to the All-South Central Regional team. As a team, the Griffons were ranked the 14th most improved team in all of Division II according to Somis Sports.

The Griffons did not lose a single player after their last season and enter the 2010 seasons with the great potential and high expectations.
