The first train, hauling freight and a couple of passenger cars, left Adelaide on Thursday 15 January and, amidst great excitement, arrived in Darwin on Saturday 17 January.

Events to greet the 1.4-km inaugural train were organised for Adelaide, Port Augusta, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin. The first FreightLink train leaves Adelaide on 16 January under an archway created by water cannon for the inauguration of the Alice to Darwin line.
