EXPLORER The last two summers, I’ve had the honor The Official Magazine of La Salle College High School of captaining the La Salle contingent at War At The Shore. Two years ago, we narrowly defeated our opponents from St. Joseph’s Prep to recapture the coveted Paul Cup. Last President summer, we won by an overwhelming margin Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 and successfully defended our title. I am fortunate to have a friend and partner in Principal Michael Donohoe ’79 with the same blood Joseph L. Have you ever driven by La Salle at night and wondered what all of those cars could possibly be doing there at that hour? I have asked myself that question many times as I have passed the school at night. It seems like there is always something going on… 14 Explorer Autumn 2006

Report of Annual Giving 2005/2006 16 Explorer Autumn 2006

Dear Friends of La Salle, One of the most rewarding roles as President of La Salle College High School is saying “thank you” to you, the supporters of our mission. It is truly an honor for me to express my appreciation on behalf of our trustees, administra- tion, staff, faculty, and students for your ongoing generosity. Without it, La Salle would not be what it is today. The old cliché, “it takes a village to raise up a child,” is equally true when it comes to supporting a school. I am both honored and humbled by the depth of concern and loyalty that is demonstrated by all those who give their time, energy and financial resources to help ensure that we can continue to carry on the Lasallian tradition of educating the whole person—spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically. Annual gifts from our alumni, support of our athletic programs by our parent booster groups, the dedicated service and involvement of our Mothers’ Club and Men of La Salle —all play an integral part in “touching the hearts and minds” of our diverse student body. Our La Salle community shares in the responsibility of making the time our young men spend at La Salle as meaningful and as valuable as possible, and you have demonstrated that you take that responsibility to heart. As we move closer to the 150th anniversary of La Salle College High School, I believe our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, would be proud of the commitment that we and others who have come before us have made to his teachings. Based on those teachings and with the support of many, La Salle has and continues to graduate men of intellect and accomplishment, men of faith and compassion, men of service and justice, and men of integrity and respect. Thank you again for supporting our boys so they can become our Men of Tomorrow! Sincerely,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 La Salle College High School, a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for young men President of varied backgrounds, is conducted in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Dear Friends of La Salle, Last year was a year of transition for La Salle College High School as a new administrative team joined together to lead our school. We welcomed Brother Richard Kestler back to La Salle – this time into the role of President. Joseph Marchese joined us as our new Principal, and Gail Evans was recruited into the newly created position of Vice President of Institutional Advancement. Despite some typical bumps in the road, the transition went extremely well, and I want to congratulate all three of our administrators for all of their hard work and efforts in ensuring that the school ran as smoothly as possible during this year of change. Another transition—creating an Office of Institutional Advancement, similar to the structure within many colleges and universities—allowed us to better coordinate all of the fundraising, alumni and parent relations, and marketing efforts of the school. Under the leadership of the Institutional Advancement Committee, this structure will serve as the cornerstone for our school to embark on the largest capital campaign it has ever conducted. You will be hearing much more about this project in the months ahead as we continue our efforts to raise $25 million to build a new academic wing, renovate existing classroom space and develop three new fields on 31 acres of newly acquire property located at the northeast section of our campus. So far, the results of our campaign efforts have been very encouraging. Through all of these transitions, La Salle alumni, parents and friends continued to support the everyday needs of our school. Over $2.7 million was contributed through annual appeals, grants, parent and booster fundraising activities, and various special events. Annual Fund dollars help to ensure that our school can continue to provide a Christian Brother education to qualified young men, regardless of their ability to pay. Other annual fundraising efforts provide resources to enhance our sports and fine arts programs, underwrite special purchases or projects, and to support the continuing education needs for our faculty and staff. Through the combined efforts of all of these dedicated groups, we are able to accomplish great things on behalf of the young men who attend La Salle. Our Annual Report to Donors affords us an opportunity to recognize and thank all of the wonderful groups mentioned above for their generous gifts of time, talent and energy. What you do is a labor of love, and all gifts, large or small, are critical to our success as a Catholic, independent college prep school for young men. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your thoughtful and generous support. We could not Al J. Gabriele do all that we do without you! Annual Fund Giving by Class Strong alumni giving represents a fervent loyalty to one’s Alma Mater. La Salle would not be able to maintain the level of academic excellence and spiritual development that is the hallmark of our school without the support of our loyal and generous Brothers’ Boys.

Paul McManus Davis, USMC (Ret.) James P. McMenamin My commitment to La Salle and the Christian Brothers began Donald F. Furey long before I attended La Salle College High School at 20th and Harry A. Newnam, Jr. Class of 1941 36% $3,180 Olney. The Brothers taught at St. Patrick’s School in Center City Edward F. Sprissler Charles E. Adler Philadelphia when my Dad was a student there. He went on John J. Tague Charles J. Ansel to La Salle College High School at Broad & Stiles and maintained Thomas G. Thompson Kenneth L. Beech lifelong friendships forged in those years. He often spoke of the Edward M. Francis P. Bogle dedicated teachers and outstanding role models that shaped him Ward, USN (Ret.) (Dec’d) Joseph E. Bourgeois as a young man. There was no doubt that, as his son, I too Joseph J. Dugan, Jr. (Dec’d) would attend La Salle to benefit from the Christian Brothers’ Class of 1937 5% $50 Thomas A. Flannery Joseph W. Sosna John R. Fleming philosophy. In true La Salle fashion, my mother shared in William A. Geppert, Jr. my experience by becoming a member of the La Salle Mothers’ Class of 1938 41%$1,305 Harry J. Hagan Club. My whole family was touched by the love and dedication Raphael J. Altmann William Q. Harty of the Christian Brothers community. Joseph V. Conway (Dec’d) John T. Kelly William C. Foster Joseph F. McBride So it was that in 1982, when Brother Fred called to ask if I Ludwig M. Frank, MD Philip P. O’Neill would help to reorganize the Alumni Association, I jumped at the Francis S. Jeffery Albert V. Pescatore chance. It would allow me the opportunity to support the school Charles R. McGlone (Dec’d) Peter J. Sweeney and community that had played such a big part in my life and Dominic E. Mercaldo (Dec’d) Eugene F. Volz the life of my family. We set a goal to reconnect the alumni with George A. Naab, Sr. their La Salle experience in order to further the mission to LTC William J. Class of 1942 31% $28,700 educate all young men, regardless of their ability to pay, in the O’Donnell, USAF (Ret.) Alvin A. Buben spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Alumni financial support Walter J. Small Robert J. Carabasi, MD is critical to achievement of that goal. With the dedicated leader- Raymond J. Tatlow, Jr. Ralph J. Cartwright ship of the Alumni Board, and outstanding support from Hugh F. Convery Florence Ward and her alumni staff, we were able to reach Class of 1939 17% $1,050 Gerald F. Crumlish Leon F. Brennan Henry J. Freiberg out to alumni. The response was gratifying. As a result of Col. George J. Robert F. Gallagher, DDS these efforts, we have been able to make La Salle accessible Edelmann, USMC (Ret.) Thomas J. Hare III to many young men whose financial hardship precludes LTC Robert W. Filosa, USMC (Ret.) Thomas B. Harper III (Dec’d) them from even considering it as an option for their high John F. Hughes, Jr. Eugene P. Hughes, Sr., MD school education. Francis E. Lafferty John J. Markulin Adolf Von Hake John L. McHale The first of my three sons began his education at La Salle in Joseph D. 1995 and it changed my perspective from alum alone to alum as McMenamin, DO (Dec’d) a parent. I began to realize that the entire La Salle community Edward J. Murphy (Dec’d) i.e. faculty, staff, alumni and parents must work together to Lawrence E. Rush educate young men in the Christian Brothers’ tradition. During Francis A. Schanne the last 11 years while my boys were attending La Salle, I made William T. Tapp it my personal mission to lead by example and to encourage others to be an integral part of their sons’ education at La Salle. I couldn’t ask people to serve without serving or to give without giving. My son, Dennis, will graduate from La Salle in 2007, the 50th anniversary of my own graduation from La Salle. For me personally and for my family, giving back to La Salle has been a legacy of love. 27 Explorer Autumn 2006

Varga, PhD William J. Walsh The personal time commitment I am making to the La Salle’s William T. Ward new Capital Campaign will keep me involved in the school’s James P. If these future La Salle men can look back on their experiences at La Salle as fondly as I do, then my commitment today is well worth the effort. 31 Explorer Autumn 2006

Leadership Gifts Pension Protection Act of 2006 $500,000 – $999,999 Mr. & Mrs. Domenic M. DiPiero A new law presents a wonderful opportunity through 2007 for Mr. & Mrs. Charles E. Dunleavy, Jr. individuals to utilize their IRA’s creatively to accomplish special Mr. & Mrs. Timothy P. Hughes philanthropic objectives. It took nearly a decade, but Congress has finally enacted legislation as part of the Pension Protection Act of Major Gifts 2006 (PPA 2006), which offers charitably minded individuals a golden $250,000 – $499,999 opportunity to make gifts from their IRA’s and exclude the amount Mr. John E. Glaser of their gifts from gross income. To qualify for the Pennsylvania Special Gifts Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC): $100,000 – $249,999 • donors must be 70 1/2 years of age or older; The DePaul Family • transfers must go directly from the IRA to qualified charities; The Donahue Family Mr. & Mrs. Robert A. Fabiszewski • gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer; and Mr. and Mr. Al J. Gabriel • gifts must be outright. * Mr. & Mrs. Robert P. Moran * Transfers to donor advised funds, supporting organizations, Mr. & Mrs. Pietro V. Scola charitable remainder trusts, and charitable annuities do not qualify. Mr. Edward R. Solvibile Mr. & Mrs. John Whalen The opportunity is available for 2006 and 2007, and no charitable income-tax deduction is allowed. Supporting Gifts $50,000 – $99,999 Until now, individuals withdrawing $100,000 from their IRA’s and Mr. & Mrs. Ernest M. Behr contributing it to a charity would have had to include the $100,000 Mr. & Mrs. Daniel J. Maguire in their income and would have been allowed a federal charitable Dr. & Mrs. William J. Markmann income-tax deduction. Ostensibly, the net result was zero tax Mrs. Pat Meehan implication – a “wash” for all practical purposes. The new law Mr. & Mrs. Robert B.
