We all accept, I think, that, apart from perhaps his half a dozen or so finest works, Delius was probably a member of the Third XI (or Hall of Fame, as some would call it) of music – on par, perhaps, with (but not, of course, in any way like) Rachmaninoff, Ravel or Prokofiev – but the majority of the reports I have seen imply that he played for the Fourth or even Fifth XIs, never at mid-on but just dreaming away in the outfield. I have often thought of launching into print to challenge those views, but each time realised (or was told), before it was too late, that it would be very unlikely to do our cause any good. People who like Delius’s music will have ‘noted and passed on’, and those who don’t will have had their prejudices confirmed. The chances of persuading anyone to explore it through a concert notice must be extremely small, and there is nothing like live performances for converting the ‘Dislikers’ or the ‘Not interesteds’. Hopefully, at least a modest number of the 4000–5000 members of the Proms audiences on the nights in question might have been sufficiently interested to listen again or try a little more. I continue, however, to be delighted at the number of performances being given all over the UK and Ireland with a Delius work in the programme, and particularly with those by pro-am or small professional orchestras – who have often been very adventurous in their choice of works. Having talked quite often to players during their concert intervals, contrary to received wisdom, they seem actually to have enjoyed playing it – and that is a modestly hopeful sign for the future. The anniversary year is finishing with a bang – our seminar at The British Library, the Ealing Festival, the long weekend at Chetham’s and the Wexford Festival – and I don’t think that anyone can say that the musical world has ignored it – even if the critics may have thought it a waste of time! Martin Lee-Browne 7 DSJ 152 Autumn 2012.indd 7 29/10/2012 10:45 EDITORIAL As this special year draws towards its final weeks, we have enjoyed a wonderful period of live performances of music by Delius, at the Proms; in Edinburgh and from orchestras and soloists throughout the country. In the autumn and winter we can look forward to the exciting Study Weekend at The British Library; The Ealing Autumn Festival; a fine-sounding concert performance of A Village Romeo and Juliet at The Queen Elizabeth Hall, in the more than competent hands of Ronald Corp and a full production of this same opera at Wexford in Ireland. We must also not forget all the concerts and events at Chetham’s in Manchester and Bradford in October. What strikes me again and again is the number of people who attend concerts where music by Delius is performed and who clearly enjoy it. This only underlines once again that people will come to live performances of music by Delius especially when it is sensitively programmed with other music from all parts of the world. Although in the past I have been critical of the BBC regarding the lack of Delius’s music in Proms concerts, this year the BBC must be warmly congratulated for its coverage of the anniversary in the 2012 Proms. Critics have been hostile to several performances so far, but yet the public still attends and enjoys

MOSLEY GUSTAV MAHLER'S IeH BIN DER WELT ABHANDEN GEKOMMEN AS SONG AND SYMPHONIC MOVEMENT: ABDUCTION, OVER-CODING, AND CATACHRESIS While many have commented upon the manner in which Gustav Mahler quotes both himself and other sources in his music, this stylistic feature of Mahler's composition has not, to my knowledge, been examined from the perspective of intertextuality. The many intertexts of Mahler's music include: literary texts of his own creation as well as those by other authors, other musical styles and genres, musical compositions by other composers, and portions of his own oeuvre. Nowhere is Mahler's musical intertextuality more informative than in the many and varied relationships between his songs and his symphonic compositions. The case of Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen as poem, piano-Lied, orchestral song, and the Adagietto movement of his Symphony No.5 is one such example. This essay will employ a semiotic methodology to examine: (1) the abductive process by which Mahler approached RUckert's poem, (2) the practice of over-coding by which this poem became a piano-Lied, an orchestral song, and finally a purely instrumental symphonic movement, and (3) the manner in which the Adagietto of Mahler's Symphony No. 5 constitutes a catachresis, or misapplied metaphor, in relation to the text from which it originated. MAHLER'S ABDUCTIVE APPROACH TO LIED COMPOSITION What does it mean for a composer at the beginning of the twentieth century to quote the musical material from a vocal composition in a subsequent instrumental composition? The first implication of this question has to do with our model for understanding Lied composition itself.

    SYPHILIS’ IMPACT ON LATE WORKS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC COMPOSERS Rempelakos L1, Poulakou-Rebelakou E1, Tsiamis C1, Rempelakos A2 1History of Medicine, Athens University Medical School, Athens, Greece 2Urologic Department, Hippocrateion Hospital, Athens, Greece INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVE: To present the effects of the tertiary stage syphilis on the last works of some famous European classical music composers who suffered from the disease. METHODS: The review of the biographies of seven documented syphilis cases of composers, focusing on the events of their last period of life and the review of the critics for their artistic expression under disease-affected circumstances. RESULTS: The 19th century is undeniably considered as the golden age of classical music but, at the same time, some of the most famous composers were victims of this disease-menace, strongly stigmatizing themselves and their families, the latter trying to keep the shameful secret, aftermath destructing sources and documents. Seven cases of musicians with syphilis have been studied: Franz Schubert died at the age of 31, while Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf (age at death 46 and 43 respectively), both attempted suicide and passed the rest of their lives in insane asylums. Moreover, Gaetano Donizetti infected his wife, Virginia, who died in childbirth before his own death occurring between catatonic symptoms and bouts of persecution mania. Bedrich Smetana predicted his death entitling his composition “final page” and indeed, he did not compose anymore and died soon in a mental asylum. Frederick Delius lived for fifteen years blind and paralyzed dictating his scores to a young follower of his music, although the quality of the late compositions cannot be compared with the priors.

    A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes.
